London, explains why the beautiful cochineal and car mine colors are so expeusive. It says: One of the best and most powerful ani mal dyes used in the arts and manu factures is the body of the female cochi neal insect, dried. This insect exists on a species of cactus, and when alive is about the size of a ladybird, or per haps a trifle smaller. It is wingless, rather long, equally broad all over, and Ib marked behind with deep incisions and wrinkles. It has six feet, which curiously enough are only of use di rectly after birth, and secures itself to the plant by means of a trunk which is found between the fore feet, and de rives Its nourishment from the sap. The male cochineal is like the female only during the larra period. It changes into chrysalis and eventually appears m red dies. The female de posits some thousands of eggs, whioh she protects under her body until they are hatched, and on the appearance of the young oaas the parent dies. While the youag are in the larva state their ex cannot be determined. They lose their skins several times, and while the female fixes herself on the plant, the male, after retting over the pupa state, b winged. Two or three months is the extent of the life of these little insects. They are gathered before they lay eggs aid are then rich in coloring matter. Carmine to prepared from the cochi neal insect, the Coccus acii, which is collected by brushing the branches of the cactus with the tall of a squirrel or other animal; this is very tedious work. They are killed by immersing them in boiling water, ana this has to be done atonoeor they would lay their eggs, and thereby lose much of their value. There are many processes for prepar ing the carmine. The French process may be taken as an example: one pound of the powdered cochineal insects is boiled for fifteen minutes in three gal lons of water; one ounce of cream of tartar it them added, and the boiling. continued tan minutes longer; then one ounce and a half of powdered alum is thrown in, and the boiling continued lor two minutes longer. The liquid is then poured oft and set aside for the oarnune to settle down. In other pro cesses flfff"" of soda or potaah is msed. A London editor has discovered that Yankee girls "look you stralghtly and carenely in the face," and are seif-pos-essed without being unnatural or pre cocious. m m Of the Bfehops of the Church of England three are overeighty and saw ever seveaty years of age. WHERE THE FIRE IS OUT. Magic No More a Mystery Seen From Across the World. "Haroun of Aleppo," said Sir Philip Derval, "had mastered every secret in nature which the nobler magic seeks to fathom.. He discovered that the true art of healing is to assist nature to thiow off the disease to summon as it were, the whole system to eject the enemy that has fastened on a part. His processes all included the reinvig oration of the principle of life." In this the Eastern sage merely an icipated the practice of the best phy sicians of to-day. What life itself is nobody knew then nobody knows now. But we have learned something of the reasons why the mj'Sterious tide rises and falls. Provided the great organs of the body are not irreparably destroyed, medical science can always relieve, and often save. Yet no reput able physician now adheres to the bar barous and stupid processes of deple tion, such as bleeding, by which it was attempted to cure disease by reducing the patient's ability to resist it. Now-a-days we do not tear down the fort Jc help the garrison we strengthen it. In this intelligent and beneficial work it is conceded that Parker's Tonic leads all other medicines. As an invigorant it acts immediately and powerfully up on the circulation aud the organs of digestion, thus giving nature the assist ance she calls for. It follows that all ailments of the stomach, kidneys and liver are at once relieved or cured. No other preparation embodies the same qualities or produces similar results. It is delicious to use, and the best known anti-intoxicant. Price 50c. and $1. Hiscox & Co., New York. A BLESSING TO ALL MANKIND.
