Perhapa -k would tie well to consid er some of the objects of recitation he fore speaking of methods, for method are Mil means by which we seek to at tain desired ends. We have many children, and it might be well to add many grown peo ple, believe, that the only object in studying is to acquire the ability to make'a good recitation. We teachers do not believR this, therefore we shauld teach the children thst they do not study merely to re cite. We ought to consider any recitation which merely tests a pupil's prepara tion of an assigned lesson, as a failure. What then are the objects ol recitation? They may le clawed as primary and secondary. Primary object: I. In struction imparted by teachers and pu pils. 2. Mental, physical, and moral training for the pupil. Secondary objects: To induce study, to test preparation, to cultivate lan guage, to correct mitaken ideas, to awaken inquiry, to form habits of at tention and self-possesion. The methods by which these objects may le attained arc the bent methods, arc the methods we wish to employ. This subject is so broad that In a few mutes talk one can hut touch upon of the leading features There llions of methods. If time allotted for each recitation is of sufficient length, it is well to close with a hasty coucxt review of topics previously passed over. Such a review should be upon main facts only, and is valuable as a means for fixing them firmly in the pnpil's mind. Wo spoke of physical and moral training in recitation. Thoy arc both important factors. It is not difficult to fix upon a mode of phjrsicflo, con. iltJfivortTcrly, systematic movements while goiug to and from class, and a proper attitude while in class. Loung ing should never be tolerated, but each pupil taught to sit erect, to stand alone and in an erect position. A method for moral training in reci tation is not so easy. Can there be any prescribed rule for moral training? I know ol none. It seems to me that it should be given only as the exigencies of the situation demand. It can al ways seem to come in, incidentally, in such a manner as not to lead the child to suspect you of lecturing or preach ing. As was stated lefore, the method or the plan must vary with the work. We all know that somewhat different methods have to be employed in differ ent branches and for different grades. It is equally true and self-evident that the mode must be modified to suit dif ferent topics of tho same branch in the same grade. If wo but keep the objects of recita tion in view and strive faithfully to ac complish something at e'ach reciUtiou, we cannot foil to invent, or at least to adapt to our work good methods.
