Mr. I. S. Beal, of Batin, called last
Tuesday to renew his subscription to
the Chikf. Mr. Beal is one of the suc
cessful farmers of that part of the
county. He has planted thii reason
one hundred acres of corn and has in
a little over eighty acres of Hmall
grain which looks well. He made
money Inst year farming, and will do
still better this year if nothing happens
to his crops.
We have on several occasions called
attention to the inconvenience to our
citizens arising from the location of
tho express and telegraph offices so far
friun town. We can see no nood rea-
on why the express office, at least.
should not be located in the town.
The long distance from town to the ex
press office, coupled with the extreme
ly unaccommodating disposition of
those having it in chaigc, is a hard
ship to the people of Red Cloud, that
should be remedied as soon as possi
ble. No surer indication that a man is
beaten is needed than for him to shout
"you'r a liar." Such was tho attitude
and language of the Aryiu man last
week towards the Chief and Democrat.
wo have scored Bro. Kenney unmer
cifully in tho past, and have caused
j him to ho ridiculed by nearly every
body in the county, in fact the bare
mention of "wolf hunt" in his pres
ence is sufficient to make him slink
off like a whipped cur, although sev
eral years have elapsed since that joke
was perpetrated 011 him. We, however,
hare became tired of a newsnancr war
hen there is no rcspo table opposi
tion, and turn thcivyrit ami its im
becile editor over to the tender mcr
cie of tho Democrat, well satisfied that
Bro. Clute will soon find, as we have,
that there is no honor and but little
satisfaction in fighting a skunk.
Wo invite all the readers of the
Chief to come in and get acquainted
with us. You may not care to form
our acquaintance, but we assure you
that wo desire-to becoma acquainted
with you. A few of you have been ta
king the Chief for moro than six years
and during that time have never call
ed upon us, neither have you remem
bered us with a P. O. money order.
Of course wc don't care a fig for the
live or six years subscription you owe
us, not at all, wc don't need it, our
creditors will wait on us until Gabriel
toots his tin horn, but we would like
to gaze upon your classic countenan
ces just once, we would like to see how
a man looks who will tako a paper six
years or more and never come in to
see whether some kind friend has paid
the bill or noL If you can't call in to
see us, for heavens take send us a
cheap photograph of yourself, (you
can send it in an envelope for one
cent,) as it will be useful to in and we
will take great comfort in gazing upon
it, and then there is another consid
eration we want it for our rogue's
gallery.
Mr. L. D. Fowler, foreman for L.
Cahiil & Co., of Kalamazoo Michigan,
manufacturers of plow carriages aud
corn plow attachments, bis finished
his work in this county and gone to
Bloomington, Franklin county. - Mr.
Fowler is a gentleman, as is also each
of the men who are working for him,
and it gives us pleasure io state that
in all our experience we have never
met a "aquarer" or more honorable
set of men in any avocation, and wc
are glad to say that they met with the
success in this county that their up-
trighyaealing merited. Mr. Fowler
us that he sold, in this county.
wo hundred and thirty plow carriages
and forty -seven corn rIow attach
ments, and the farmers all express
themselves as being well pleased with
them. During the six weeks that Mr.
Fowler and his "boys" remained in
Red Cloud and vicinity they laid out,
in cash, for board, clothing, livery,
horses, horse-shoeing &c, an average
of from one huudred and twenty-five
to a hundred and filly dollars a week,
aggregating nearly one thousand dol
lars lectin this town by the employes
of the Cahiil manufacturing company.
That Mr. Fowler and his men will
meet with the best of success in Frank
lin county, we have ne- doabt, for,
aside from the merit of the machin
ery they are selling, hcy are business
men, every one of them, and conse
quently are board to succeed.

Prof. Rnndall not being on hand in

very interesting and practical one, ur

given a practical turn, ami especially
urging that bmino-s forms and me
thods be taught.
After this, Mr. Barr, of Grand Island,
read a brilliant paper on The Reci
tation, finely conceived, and finely
written, and received with much favor.
It scattered somewhat, and most for
tunate was be who win not hit or ra
ther, most unfortunate, if the hit, as it
ought, should result in information.
In the afternoon, Mrs. Judion, of
Red Cloud, gave a well-writtcr paper
on Utility of Drawing. Without de
fining closely just what she would
have, or how attain it, she urged a gen
eral introduction of drawing into the
schools. Several spoke after her, all
favoring the idea.
Then President Perry, of Doane Col
lege, gave an exposition of the Metric
System of Weights aud Measures, eulo
gising it, but at the same time frankly
acknowledging the impediments and
opnositing in the way. This elicited
no discussion.
After this, Mr., of New York,
gave a couple of humorous reading,
which upset the gravity of all the
school marms, and subjected them all
to fines and imprisonment or would,
if there were any such penalties laid
down in the by-laws.
At this point, a number began to
look, first at their watches, and then
out of the windows, toward the depot
