Where one deems himself walking in
wisdom and light, another feels him
self groping in Utopian darkness. One

for life, and bliss and joy forever, in an
increasing measure, while another sees
no eign n man of his immortality, and
believes he dies, its die the brute, or

OUR WASHINGTON LETTER.
Washington, Fkii. 4, 1883.
Washington has become a. favorite
city for conventions of every kind, and
this being the suitable reason, there
follows on endlcrM sneccssion of them.
An agricultural convention was held
at the Agricultural Department hist
week, to be followed by another this,
and yet another next week. Then tho
Woman's National Sullragc Associa
tion held its fifteenth annual conven
tion at Lincoln Hall. The former
may have been more important in its
purposes and results, but since I air
sure even one will agree with me in
thinking the proceedings of a woman s
convention more entertaining than
anything that could be told about men
I liave 'decided to write about that,
their program was arranged for a three
day's convention. Morning, afternoon
and evening sessions were held each
daw with two or more addresses each

Mrs. Aniv Dunn, of Indianapolis ..fired
the first shot lor woman's righto in her
character lecture of "Zekle's wife," a
satire upon man's laws for woman, and
his treatment of her. She appeared in
costume, and was alternately numer
ous and pathetic, witty and droll. She
personated an old woman of seventy,
who had, when young, married on illit
erate man. moved west, and was sub
jected to all the hardships of pioneer
life. After teaching her husband to
rend, ho took to politics, was elected
to the legislature, became estranged
from his family, and proved false to
his marriage "vows. So the deserted
wife was compelled to lecture for a liv
ing. Mrs. Dunn is the author of the
sail story, and while it was taken from
re.tl life it is not her own experience.
Mrs. Lillie Devereux Blake, k woman
of decided convictions, practical, cos
mopolitan in thought, and an earnest
worker in the cause, seicctert tor tier

Mrs. Mary Wright Scwall, of Indiadap

school to prepare girls for Howard
University(when its doors arcopen to
women) addressed the convention sev
eral times in her deliberate, impressive
manner, with forcible, eloquent words.
Mrs. Scwell is young, handsome, of
medium size, the impersonation of
mental and phvsical health, and.
