We read of their dead heroes, philoso
phers, poets, and atat-men, admire
their achievement. in the fields of art,
science and war, and forget that we
have names that eclipse I hem; name
that shall ever illumine history's page.
And though the clinging hums may
have covered and hid their initials on
the crumbling tomlstone, yet. in the
hearts of grateful fellowmen, a monu
ment more enduring and spotlc-s in its
he.iuty, than the purest, whitest mar
ble, shall tower proudly erect, as long
as Immunity admire geniu, or rever
ences great and glorious deeds. Men
and women may be living to-day who
slept in their cradles during the strug
gles that finally rotilted in their estab
lishing our national existence.
They talk of limes and epochs in
American history thnt seem to u a
part of a far distant past. They speak
of days when the country we now in
habit, surrounded by all the comforts
and luxuries of civilized life, was un
known save in the tales of some won
derful hunter. When the broad pra-
ries that surround us were the home of
the buffalo. Where no habitation was,
except, perhaps, the rude wigwam of.
the savage, and ''where rolled the Ore
gon, and heard no sound, savc his own
dashings.''
They arc relics of a primative past,
living in the midst of wonders. They
were born with our country, and have
lived to witness its brightening glory.
They were children when three million
of souls achieved constitutional liber
ty, and now, with silvered heads, and
trembling steps, they walk among fifty
millions of prosperous countrymen.
Is not thi a wonderful progress during
a single lifetime?
Thcv have een the boundaries of
our laud extended to the Pacific ocean
and the grandest fabric ever erected,
gain new strength at:d beauty with the
vears. Although so voung. our land
exceed any other in the variety and
value of its productions. With regard
to production and manufactures, the
U, S. may be divided into three great
divission. In the centre, guarded on
the east and west by mighty ranges of
mountains, and watered by copious
streams i the grande-t agricultural re
gion on the face of the earth The
Miisbippi basin, whence the life-giving
streams go forth, our mighty rivei
permeating the land like gigantic ar
teries, are thronged with thousands of
vessels, bearing toji hungry world, the
golden products of our boumllez'S
plains and fertile valleys. If we glance
at the map of Europe we find that the
country is divided among a number of
nationalities. We notice also that the
variation of climate have much to do
in defiuing the boundaries of the ditler
cnt governments; and thrt no single
country is able to succesofully produce
all the inauy articles a civilized and en
lightened erple require. Hence ire
readily sec that they must in great
measure depend on other climes for
numberles things they feel neeeary to
their comfort and happiness. Witli us
it is different. We liave a climate
rangelng from Arctic coldness to tor
rid heat. Are able to produce almo-l
all the agricultural products of the tor-
iidf the Temperate and Frigid zones.
The vines of California, rival in luct
iou-nesj? of their clusters, the famous
fruits of sun-kissed Itahr; or the golden

America would not to-day occupy the.

If we glance at the mnnlKir of won

we notice that the were siisgested by
persons of considerable education. In
fact, in whatever field anything of im

owing to our high standard of intelli

America ha made wonderfully pro

or miscellaneous sketches, we turn to
Cooper, Hawthorne or Irving, and find
on every page, beau tie- of language
and -entiment. Our orators, and state
men, among whom are Webster, Clay
and Calhoun, are 'he pride of America
and their utterance shall go ringing

It if. estimated that there are almut
0000 newspapers and magazines pul-
li-hed in the United Stale", with an an
nual issue of about two million seven
hundred copies. And all this siuce
the establishment of the first paper in
I7fG. Our land hn about as many
periodical? a the whole world besides,
with a circulation one thin! greater.
Americans are pieeminently a ncw
nancr reading people. This is one of
the peculiarities that strikes the atten
tion of a stranger. Free a- the air, the
newspaper penoirato every part of the j
country, is found in every office and
warehouse, in even- parlor and hovel,
in the hot"l and the railway car, in the
priBon and the church. Thi fact alone
should convince the most skeptical
that the American jeople take the
lead as fnr a intelligence is concerned.
From the simple hand press of Frank
