We have always maintained by pre
cept and example that editors are the
purest and best men in the world, and
now comes n story of Major John Ed
wards, tho irresponsible and somewhat
irascible editor of the Sedalia Dispatch
which shows that the fraternity is true
to the high standard wo lvave fitted for
it. Speaking of the surrender of
Frank Jnmcs, with which Major Ed
wards was identified, the JciTersou Citv
correspondent of the Herald report
Govenor Crittenden as saying-. "By
the change of a single word in the sur
render of Frank James, without effect
ing in the least the standing of that
man before the law, he conld have ta
ken to himself 10,00 ". All that was
necessary for him to have done when
he eutered Uiis office was to have said;
"Governor, this is Frank James. I
snrrenderhim to you," instead, of "he
'surrenders," and yet he would not
change that word. I asked him after
wards why he did not use language
that would have enabled me to have
paid the money over to him, and he
replied: "Governor I would not have
changed that word for 41,000,000." If
a preacher, doctor or lawyer had had
that chance, that $10,000 would hare
been yanked out of the gubernatorial
jeans in a red hot minute. The editor

uificd their intention to be present, (re
sides high school teachers and others.
Sec the program in this column, aud
be sure to attend.
The Superintendent has during the
past year visited every tchool district
in the county, where a school has been
held, except ten, and the vacation for
the past two weeks was to allow him
ime to vhit them. The extreme
weather nnd storm have prevented his
doing so. He has however visited
school when the most of these teach
ers have been engaged, and knows the
qunlity of work done by them. Twelve
districts have been vititcd more than
once. The circulars have been sent
out, are intended to furnish the office
with information, concerning these
schools, at present, until he visits aj,ain,
which ho will do during the ycir to
come.
It is taken for grnntcd that every in
telligent man knows that the county
Superintendent i not paid a salary
lie is paid for each day's work, and if
he does only one day's work, that U all
he gcte pay for. and if he is engaged
300 days, ho gets pay for thruc d'is. '
If there ho work in overseeing the
schools of a county, then it follows
that somebody niu.-t do that work. If
some other officer is made Superinten
dent ox-officio, as was the en.e with
the State Suporintundeiiey when the
state was organized, then that officer
doing the work, would of necessity
take time, pay his own expense, etc.
a5 the state Sojicrintcndcnt now docs
and would expect pay for hi services.
Experience has rhnwn that the work
of tho Superintendent is best done
when in the hands of n special officer,
elected for that purpose, aud when
there is nothing for such nn officer to
do, then will be time enough to talk
about abolishing the office.
