FOR TIIK CHIEF RV M. H. L. 3. R.
Alt hull? our.huuU ccntenial year of
jubilee,
Our songs of joy, our notes of praic,
wo bring to thee.
Of all the circling yean, thnt down
tins stream of time have flown.
Make this, 0 God, the grandest, ita
glories all thine own.
Our land of all lands. Thou'st
made the richest and the best.
Her vaults nith coin, her bind with
grain, arc full and preved.
Her sons and daughters, crowd her
courUi, to write and ing.
Mans richest product, of the mind
to thee they bring.
Her borders thou hast fringed with
old oceans foam.
Her rolling rivers, through her fer
tile valleys roam.
The "Iron homo" neighs wildly, o'er
all her mighty plain,
While thriving commerce, queen, in
all her cities reigns.
Her lowing herds, on waste fields,
and fertile farm are found.
Her bleating flocks, like flakes of
snow lie o'er the ground.
A million Ppindles spin her cotton,
mid her wool,
While untold mines of uncoined
coin, lie rich and full.
Her schools nnd churches, of every
style and sect,
Vic with en eh other, learning and
morals to protect.
While doctors of mankind, nnd
doctors of the law,
Search overy ?ource, from whence
newest thoughts to draw.
Her statesmen in her congrc38,
strive to legislate
Measure., which shall the greatest
good to all create.
While her women, of her men, are a
fair reflex.
In laboring for better laws, to pro
tect their sex.
Oh what joy should thrill each pa
triot heart to day,
For influcnco good, our land hath
power to sway.
and that our seven Ls, by her may
not be missed,
Let our Lauds Lays Live Long, and
Labor till the Lit.
Editorial Dreaalag:, ITight and T)i?.
Copy! copy! in our dreams we hear
the "divil say,"
Copy, copy, copy now, and right this
way.
Oh Us rapture sweet, that rests upon
the editor's ears,
When no cry for copy, from satan's
lips he hear.
Buz, buz: buz, about matrimony.
Thats what seemingly even- third man
nnd woman has been doing to "ye ed
itor" for the hist ten days, and now
we'd like a little rest, we feel tired now
nnd sleepy too liecatise nolvody puts us
in "our little bed. Now please dont
tease us any more, we'll swear if need
be it is not sti, for as things went, so
now with us they go. We're not mar
ried, if we know anything about it, and
if said "you soon will be,"'we tell you
now, we doubt if. But laying poetry
aside, and coming down to aolid, com
mon prose, we admit we have been
thinking some, aye, and talking some
to several ladies perhaps a score or so.
Well, we could'nt help it. We wanted
something, we thought perhaps they
had, and perhaps they would bo glad
to give it us, but we guess they did not
have it, at least they seemed not to
want to spare it us. Well we think we
know what we can do, the butchers
keep them, hearts we mean and
they only cost from ten to twenty
cents, and we think we can raise that
sum. Its probably better anyway, to
buy, than borrow. Well, its all over
with now, and we are glad of it. we
might have known it would turn out
so, when we first saw that new moon
over our left shoulder, but we thought
to scorn bad omens, which perhaps
we'll never dare to do again. Well we
shall have pleasant memories of inter
views, and words, and some other
things sweet kisses as down the soli
tary streams of time wc float in our lit
tle "one man cano."
To those who saw fit to decline to
give their "littt'.e all," we have lo say
"with charity for all nnd malice to
ward none,1' we do not blame you, we
would have dous the same, ic. as we
ploased.
Wc know the trust we proffered, was
asacretL high, and holy one. 2fot

1 1 is evident that there is no county
ollicial which is more at the mcrcv of!
the county commissioners than is the
superintendent, and the writer of this
article can see no ro.iion fur subordi
nation. For instance, one Superinten
dent has an elegant ollice, another
gets none; one has all his postage paid
and other necessary expenses, another
pays these out of his own pK.ket
One holds examinations, whenever in
his judgment the necessities of his
county require it, another can hold
them only when the county commii-
iouers say; one has all his stationery
furnished, another furnishes his own
stationery. There is evidently an
injustice here, if one cjunty hat
the right lo do certain thing?, all
.should have it, and if one county is le
gally debarred, all hoti!d be. nnd so
an equality exist. Evidently there
arc several Iooc thing in the school
law yet. Il is to be hoped that our
legislators will make some of these
crooked things straight this winter
Let us have a statute law to depend on'
and less "foot note law."
