Chicago grows in height as weii & in
width. Some of the buildings which
were made but four stories high when
built four or five years since, have ad-
ded two more rtories. Tlic immense
building going up for John V. Far-
well shons how vulnUntial is the
growth of this magic city of lite weU.
Thia building apjcars almost like a
little village in itself, not so much be
cause of its size, a, of the various In
dustrie going on within it.
It i -100 feet long by 230 feet in width
incHidii!" a snacions court. The plan
for rendering the wall? fire proof i
said to be .Mr. Powell's own. The
walls arc made of concrete manufac
tured on the ground. Some quarried
stone arc used for the frotit finish, but
nearly all of the stone trimming will
be of artificial stone made on the
ground. One side of the building U
directly upon the river and sand, grav
el, lumber, etc., are delivered by ship
load. It will be eight stories high, and will
cost more than a round half million
dollars. Another illustration of the
height to which buildings arc pushed
is found in the gluco'e factory on the
west pide, twelve stories high. A short
ride on the Lake Shorn road to Hills
dale, shows the same efficient manage
ment that has marked it for years,
and Foster, Esq.. the western pas
senger agent is a genial gentleman a
a pushing railroad manager. A few
days among the scenes and the friends
of early day, how many changes, how
matry have gone, how few are left.
Where but a few years since wa? an
unbroken forest, now farm joins farm.
so that for miles along the public road
there i no break in the line of fence.
The great orchard, however, for the
msot part bare and where here and
there 11 tree i bearing, the apples are
small and; imperfect.
The crop in southern Michigan was
good, but a great amount of it has
been lost on account of the continu
uous and" heavy rains. A friend told
me of one farmer who had four-hundred
acres, of which he gathered but
one fourth. The rest stood green in
the shock. Unquestionably the large
yield must lc discounted to a great ex
tent on account of what is so badly
grown as to be worthless. The corn
crop through northern Indiana and
southern Michigan is also very light.
Nebraska will see a host of visitors
from the interior states this fall as
well as from the further cast. A visit
to C. B. it Q. headquarters, on my re
turn, showed the familiar face of Nat
Brown, the traveling agent of the road
and who evidently doesn't mean to
grow poor in his work. The C-, B. it
Q, folks are always on hand for any
thing looking to the interests ro( the
country along their line. They have
arranged for low rates from points in
Nebraska to the Chicago exposition,
and will make special rates along their
line to the Nebraska state fair. Nat
Brown reports the Denver travel boom
ing and the western business general
ly prosperous. Observer
