Remember tho Chief has a good printer and jobber, which are at tho public's service nt all times. Patrons in the country send in short items of news, especially anything relative to thoroughbred stock. W. P. Ilanthornc, who is working for the B. fc M. has been home for a few days attending to his haying. It Btrikcs us that a street railway leading from town to the depot would be a paying investment for some one. W. N. Richardson returned with his wifo from Douver on last week Thurs day morning. He made a very short stay. Trof. Campbell Conductor of the in. stitute here, and Principal of the Sew ard Schools, made this office a pleasant call. A gang of laborers arc at work con structing tho new wagon road leading from town to the new passenger de pot. Mr. Dan Carson, of Columbus, Ohio, has returned to this county, and is as sisting at the railroad eating house hero. Tho Gaxette-Journal, Hastings, has a new dress. It looks too utterly too too. She's on the road with the lead ing journals. An enquiring subscriber asks: "What relation is my father's only brothor's sister-in-law to me?" Your mother of course. The round house and baggage room at the depot are nearing completion. and will add much to the appearance of things at the south end. Mr. Chas. Taplin, of Mt Morris, X. Y. passed a day or two in town this weok. He is looking over this coun try with a view to locating. The new passenger depot is enclos ed, and the plasterers commenced operations Wednesday. It is located just west of the eating house. An Independent Anti-monopoly State convention will be called by the "stato alliancc.lo be held at Hastings.on i Wednesday, Sept. 27th, 1882. G-.-W. Reed, Professor of the Gib bon schools, this state, lectured at the courthouse to a largo and apprccia tiro audieneo Wednesday evening. Rev:- Toddi- the newly appointed Pastor of tho Congregational church at this place, has purchased the Bent property in tho northsest part of town. Exclaiming "that old Argus, take it back. The Chief is sfill ahead." Ed. Kendall, night operator at the depot, laid us under obligations for ieveral items of news, among which was the fact that the Iowa journalist slippered at the eating house last even ing on their way to the Denver ex position. Hollcran bought the little house east of Mr. Becker's before he went away, and had a well put down. This looks as if he thought of coming buck some time, and we shall not be sur prised to see him back in less than six months. The header boxes on tho wagons in front of our office indicate that some body has been gathering in the prec ious "staflT of life" somewhere, and it begets a kind of assurance that there are brighter days in store for the sturdy sons of toil. W. W. Tntro, of creamery fame, has purchased an engine of four-horse power, which arrived last week to be used in the creamery here. Step by step the enterprise progresses, and is being daily demonstrated the value of its worth to the farming population. Wc see John Noyes on our streets and in his blacksmith shop again. John, as we understand, bus been home in Maine, to sec papa and mam ma for several weeks, which no doubt was very nice. John is a good boy ami deserves a fair chance at his busi ness. Mr. J. 8. Noll, of Hastings, has lo cated in Red Cloud, as agent for the Genuine Singer Sewing Machine, in tho building south of Mr. West's store. He has everything in the sewing ma chine line and does repairing also. You will find him to be a reliable gentleman. Adam Morhart, who has been sick lor a week or ten days past, is on our streets again, but not strong enough to attend to business, but Willio Mitchell goes ahead with the business all the same. Willie seems to us cut out for one of the successful business men of the future. If was not so bad a runaway as was first reported, that of Dr. Shorer's about a week ago. In fact it was no runaway at all. It was a tip over by tying the cow behind the carriage wan too long a rope, l'ortunatclv no serious damage was done, and an im portant lesson was learned. The pay car went west Monday, and was about an hour and a half paying hands here. This is another of the advantages of the B.fc M. to this place. Every dollar helps every man in tho whole community, just so much. Wc all get a touch at it if so be that it is spent here, and much that is paid here is spent hero. For want of space iu our regular is sue this week we send a supplement which will indicate our sentiments more fully on tho pending question of impartial sufferagc than wo can give in any other way. We deem this one of tho most vital questions of the' ago and entitled to a close and careful intelligent consideration. Our change of publication day from Thursday to Friday, will give the people some advantage in several ways. Thoy will be able to get one day's later news for their Sunday's reading, and if they happen in town with a desire to use the columns of a paper after Wednesday, the will find ours open up tq Thursday, r. .v. It will be gratifying to Gov. Garber's many friends to learn that his health is materially improved lately, and that he is now hopeful of a restroration to comparatively perfect health again. He thinks that he is 20 pounds heavier than he was five months ago. He has been a long and patient invalid and we are all glad to think that he will get well. The B. & M. company are puting up a hay barn, 30x60 to be filled with hayJ for the stock yards at this place which are on quite an extensive scale, hav ing a capacity for seventy cars of cat tle, with five loading shoots. Young Ed. Hosford is stock-yard master, and seems to be a elerer young man. Stock from the west will start Septem ber,! st. We are in receipt of a copr of "Twenty Army Ballads." Favorites of the boys who wore the blue. Now by the G. A. R, compiled and publish, ed by comrade L. B. Jones, of Omaha, Neb. A copy will be mailed free by the author, to any comrade upon ap plication. Address S. B. Jones, at Re publican publishing printing house, Omaha, Nebraska. Mr. Dinsmorc, like most other poli ticians, iv a stranger to us. but on slight acquaintance seems like a gen tleman that need not or would not disgrace such a position. Mr. If aresnape, of Kansas, was in town lt Saturday, and in speaking of his low wire fence said it was all right, that he had a variety of stock in his pasture, and that it was a great thing. And now while we write wc will say that omc one can make a good deal with Uncle Levi Moore, by buying an undivided half interest in Webster county, for the use of that fence. All should give it a trial. Farm rights $5. Territorial rights so that the purchaser can make some nice money on it. Enquire at this office. Chancellor Fairfield entertained a crowded house at the court home last night, the 15th, for an hour and a half leading them over mid through tiic world renowned land of Egypt, with stores of hi own personal observations while traveling there, that had in them such an enchanting charm of interest that wo, with doubtlci many others, could have been pleased and happily interested listeners for an hour more The Chancellor seems to be fairly en titled the honor of being the most in teractive orator of the state. This was the second timo that we have heard him here and wc want to be on hand when the third opportunity offers its self. On Wednesday the 9th inst, William Crouch, one of tho oldest settlers of the county, residing on Elm Creek, died, after a lingering illness of six or eight months. "Dncle Billy," as he was familiarly called and known, was one of "Johnny Bull's" honest, ardent, persisting son's of toil, who could not enjoy life unless he was trying to do something for himself or some one else. Though very poor when he came to the county, by dint of indus try, economy and good management, he acquired what would probably le )well entitled to bo considered a com petence for his widow, who seems to be the only surviving relative in this vicinity. c have been requested to call at tention to the importance of organiz ing a firo company of some kind. Iu consequence of the scatterings of hay and other feed from wagons where farmers feed their teams, and the throwing out of straw and hay from boxes ot goods packed therein, and scattered all over the ground and dried to perfect tinder by the hot sun and winds, make it extremely dangerous on account of so many men throwing away stubs of cigars, and emptying their pipes carelcsslv etc. We ore of the opinion that it would be a pre caution worth tho taking, but tho question is who will lead oir iu any movement that shall result in the desired object. Marriage At the residence of the brides father, B. Holcomb, iu tho city of Red Cloud, Neb., on the morning of August 16th, 1882, by tho Rev. Geo. O. Yciser, Mr. Rob't. V. Shirey and Miss Estelle Holcomb. At tho same timo and place and by tho same, Mr. Geo. M. Young and Miss Mary J. Dickinsou. All of Red Cloud, Nebraska. Thus endcth tho career of these parties in single blessedness. They are all well and favorably known in this community and esteemed by all. May their life be a joyous one, is the wish of tho Chief. "And tver, ; t U earn. Lap Be in Mft Lydlan airs 3trriad to immortal rerM." Mr. Humphry Smith, of White Rock, Republic County, Kansas, who bought tho Widow Roes' farm recently, 4 miles west of town, passed through here Wednesday, the 16th, with the advance train of effects, to take poss ession of his newly acquired estate. Mr. Smith is what this country was ex pressly made for, in our judgment. A stock farmer, driving with him some fine stock of horses, and nearly a hun dred head of well graded horn cattle. We are more than glad to welcome to our midst all such settlers. We pre diet success to Mr. Smith, for he seems to realize the worth of the local press as evidenced by his advance pay sub scription to the Chief. Since our last issue wc have been in temewed by several on the subject of the justice or injustice of the action of the county central committee in their arrangement for representation in the county convention. As plainly said last week, we think the action wrong, whether intentionally so or not. When it was known by those who acted in the case, who by the way, were only about one-third of the members who really ought to have constituted the body for the transaction of that busi ness. That there was a split in the party last fall, it seems to us, to take the most charitable view of it, and to express it in the mildest terms of dis aproval, that they erred in taking- as a basis for representation either one of those factions. Both factions were re publican ' and they were very even ly divided. That the one faction shoshI be read out of the republican party by the other, we do not deem either jost, courteous or wise. As Fn our first issue, we think then' -i grander achievements to be gained by haraonuarJg than by antagonizing. We concur in the sentiment of him who said, 'Let justice be dose though the hearene fall." . Tins lUt taken from the daily State Journal of Augutt 15, with the state ment tltat poibly some names might be left out, but if o it would I; sn oversight. We deem it worthy oi notice that of the 77 contributor from the state, ten of them arc from Webster county. On last Wednesday we took a trip in the rural district- which proved ad ventcrous, romantic, plca-iant and in structive. Hearing that die inventor of the silo and the mode of preserving stock - food in its green, or undricd state, w.ii at work on tho Malony & Smith sheep ranche, six nitlr outh of town, and would on ly le there that day to superintend the filling of one of the great silos built by them lat winter, we thought it too im portant an opportunity to learn a less on of truth, new to us, to let pass by unimproved, so ordered out our "Lady White Stockings' mid sulky, and struck out in hot haste for the scene of ope ration. Before we got there wc saw the unmistakable signs of something special going on by the way side. A large field of corn sown broadcast, or drilled in closely standing rows, first attracted our attention. Directly down came a mower cutting and piling this enormous growth of corn in several piles on the ground; and right after four or live teams piling it on to wag ons and hauling it to the vault iu the ground 20 feet deep and 15 to 20 feet iu laternal dimensions. By the brink of this vault was stationed one of the Belle City cnsilago cutters, with its at tached elevator or carrier running di rectly over the vault. We clip the following from tho Fair bury Gazette, in reference to Mr. Hub bell, who has recently located here. We have known Mr. H., for several years, and cheerfully reccommend him to the community: Mr. J. I). Hubbell, left this week for Red Cloud where in connection with Ma.401! Gregg he has purchased a grain elevator and will henceforth re side, at least for a time. "Jccms" came to Fairbury at an early day and thro industry and hard work has prospered. For two or three years past he has hail charge of Gregg Bro.'s steam ele vator, doing a good business. His lease expired on the first of this mouth and the property having been sold to W. W. Bailey, lie improved a favorable opportunity to go into htiMnoi at the above named place. The people of Red Cloud and vicinity will find Mr. Hubbell an honorable and straight forward man to deal with.
