Cemetery and other points where
soldiers arc buried, and the departure
of excursions in different directions,
after ten o'clock the city was pervaded
by more tli.-m Sabbath stillness. Ev
erybody but Congressmen paid due
respect to tlic occasion and the day.
Disgruntled Bourbons were fighting
the inevitable in the Mackcy-O'Connor
cae. Representatives IIoIkmoii anl
Morey, who were to deliver orations
at Arlington Heights, were kept in
their scaN and wcrc-forecd to content
themselves by strewing figurative
flowers on the niruophngus of the cn
tomed Democrats of the House.
The mystery uf the Morey letter is
having light let Into if, and the guilty
parties are in a fair way to be punish
ed for the villtiuous forgery sent
broadcast on the wing of lightning,
and through th5 printed page, to
homes and hamlets in every nook and
corner of our land. That gigantic lie,
but for the undying confidence in the
now lamented Garfield, would have
jeapordized the interests of 50,000,000
of people. To defraud one man of his
right to vote, is a great crime, but
what punishment r-hall Iks meted out
to those who rob a nation of all its
sacred rights. 'Tis time that party
guerillas should bo punished in the
mot summary manner.
Congress has been a regular circus
for the !at ten days, and the feats of
the Democratic gymnasts have been
witnessed day by day, by crowded
galleries. Republicans, determining
to cut short the bulldozing of tho mi
nority, organized their forces and
amended the rules, so as to bring up
the Mackcy-O'Connor case for consid
eration. The pugnaciems Springer
fretted and fumed, spoiling several
shirt collars in his fits of exasperation.
Randall as Speaker, had piloted the
Licmocratic cmtt through many a
political storm, but his past experience
brought no boon of comfort to his
lclcacurcd comrades. The end. of
this farce will come noon, after which
it may bo expected, the legitimate
work of the session will be taken up
and acted, upon.
The reception given on the return of
our respected citizen, the heroic Dan
enhower, was a generous tribute to a
brave adventurer, Avho hhs earned, a
proud rank among the world's heroes.
It is very doubtful if anything service
able to science can ever be learned
that will compensate for the loss of so
many heroic lives in the insane effort
of exploration among the icebergs of
the Arctic region. If an open cv
should be discovered or s trad of
terra firma found, it would be poor
place to exhibit the prowess of our
naval ships, or to illustrate Le Due's
pet scheme of raising our own tea. It
is possible that the Xorth Pole, bag
tioncd and barricaded by the frosts of
centuries, is to be set at liberty by the
migrating of fleet of icebergs now
journeying southward in such num
bers and magnitude to seriously im
pede and endanger ocean navigation.
Should such an event happen, we
have enthusiastic Yankees would sue
outa writ of habeas corpus, and take
possession of the Xorth Pole, and
fasten to its topmost end our Nation's
flag, to float in the crisp, coed air of
that land of eternal silence.

After a little delay in considering
the matter we have concluded to give
occasionally notes about the ehoolt
in our own county. We also wish the
teachers to make report themselves
upon their work, their views upon
teaching, &c.
District Xo. r,3.
This district is three miles square.
31 iw Jennie Orr has charge of the
school this season. This is her first
school, but she is doing good work and
her pupils arc learning.
District Xo. G2.
This district is north of 33 and con
tains mx sections. Tho population is
chiefly Danish. Miss Lizzie Mcintosh
is at work here, and if she succeeds
according to the interest she inanifcts
in her work, hhe will teach a good
school. Our foreign population need
much pains taken with them that they
may thoroughly comprehend what
they arc trying to study.
District No. 31.
This district is third in the north
tier of districts from the north-west
corner of the county and is three
miles square. Mrs. Adda 1). Bartlett,
whose reputation as a teacher is made,
teaches here. The pupils show a good
interest in the school, and a promi-
nent feature of her school is the
amount of oral teaching she gives the
little ones, riiysiology is taught to the
smallest pupils with success.
District No. C9,
Is in the south-west corner of the
county and contains seven and one
half sections. II. L. Luce is teaching
his first school here with good success.
He is working cnmcstly.
District No. IS,
Is south of the river on the Kansas
line. It contains eight sections. Mi
Eva Munsell is presiding here nnd she
has quite a large" country school. The
pupils are mostly girls and j-oung
ladie who arc old enough to appre
ciate a good education. V think
they should give a little Cibre atten
tion to books and less to' one another
during school hours.
District No. 39.
This district is in the southern tier
of districts, shlT the school is conduc
ted by Miss Vina Stoddard. This is
her first schoof but she is doing good
work for the primary scholars. They
arc alf interested in t&lir work. This
district has a large amount of appa
ratus, aad a teacher has every facility
for making a good school
DtsrwcrNo. S t
This district w next west of Blue
Bill, and contains six sections. Mlas
Aimtree Roth holds the sceptre ber
and she is trying to make a good 1
school. The attendance has been ir
regular, and the boose has not been
comfortable the past season' en ac-
j count of its open condition and a lack
of fuel.
District No. 59.
Thk district Is three miles 'Jrare,
Miss Mazy Hogate holds the little
on Aria check here and she seem to
beftrrjg it very well. Her clashes st
gamine daily though all her scholars
are small. A disadvantage exists here 1
