Sheriff Warren arrested a horse
thief at the po.-t oflice last Thursday.
The Lincoln Journal gives his history
as follows:
Abram Ames, the young man who
got away from this city with Hon. A.
J. Sawyer's pony several nighLs since,
was broiiL'ht into Lincoln vester.lay
afternoon bv Sherilf Warren." of

It turns out now that this is not thc
first animal stolen by thc pri-oner.
The mule belonging to Mr. Peters,
taken from in front of Hoppe's saloon,
is traced to him. In fact Ames ac
knowledged that he stole the mule
and pony. It was rumored about the
court.room yesterday afternoon that a
special grand jury would be called,
when the prisoner would plead guilty
to thc charge.

discontent kindled a flame that
burned with war's awful horror, for
four long years, and
''Wild passions slipped like hell

Louder than cannon's roar and
voiced by the discipline of defeat, was
heard the fight of the God of battles,
and 4.000.000 of shackles were broken
by the act of our first mam red Presi
dent. No nation ever paid so dearly
for its participation in a giant wrong.
The 750,000 heroes sleep in national
and confedate cemeteries, though
dead still speak to us from thu sad
pages of this wonderful hi-tory. One
martyred President seemed enough to
fill the niche and complete this wch-"

the front, ami demanding the atten
tion of Congress. In New England
there is one .saving institution to 043C
inhabitants, while in the other 3:1
States there is one to each 'Jl'.WjO. To
supply the people of these States, in
same proportion as New England,
wo.ihl require fiOXl new Banks. In
the Southern States there now are but

Banks was $hl.73:.S76 If the pistal
savings sy-tem was adopted the sav

largely increased throughout the
whole country. Private enterprise
cannot furnish this great want but
the government can through the bill
now pending in ongrc-s. It.- po.-'-age

places. It would prevent runs on
Banks and consequent panics. No j
discredit could be thrown upon a P-t J

convenience to the people of the
country. Let u's have the Po-tal
Savings Banks a they now have in
Canada and in most of the countries
of the old world, and the welfare of
the industrious and their dependent
families will be as-ured and the pro
ducing millions of our land will be
come stockholders in our great
national institutions. Phak.
