It lias been re peatedly Hpaerted that the Chiki-rai.-ed the cry of fraud in county man agement for political purpos.es and through personal spite. Recent de vclopemcnth show that the-e report were fal-e and that the Chief 1i:l- for the lat three years been on the right trail We propose, in this article, to .-how to our readers that such is the cae, and then drop the subject, per haps until the investigation u com pleted. Tbercpoitof the Ex-Co. Clerk a puhlised tin- week in the commission er's proceeding. shows that the sur plus fund were turned into the treas ury by tbe cleik. This i- not a fact. .ifterMr. Tulley.- had retired from olli-e, ail!.' during the month of Janu ary, the county commissioners so far investigated his accounts as to make the discuvery that he hau not turned o'.er to the treasurer certain .'uoneys that belonged to the county, and thev made to Mr. Tulleys a request that he appear and pay the money over, which he did, the 14th day of the pre ent month, amounting in all, for the years 1SS0 and I SSI, to the sum of $ 852.7'J. It is not our wish to contin ue a light on Mr. Tulleys, and nothing could be farther from our intentions at the present time, but it is due to our.-elf, after being lied about by Mr. Tulley and some of his backers, show ing that we have been right all these years and that him and some of hi supporters, though most of the latter innocently, have been wrong. The law requires that the county clerk -hall turn into the. treasury of the county, at the end of every three months, :ill money in e.ve.-- of lti--alary received by him in ia &e. This the late ri jnty clerk failed to do during the list t.vo years, as recent developetiKius show, but carried the money away with him, and the ques tion naturally arri-e-, how ha- it been for the la-t eight years? Mr. Joiie also turned in between two and Ihiei I nuiidied dollars at a recent imetim: of the count board. Did we wi-h, which we ceitainly do not, to make Unlit on Mr. TuHeys and were we actuated by the sariic vindic tive and hell-born malignity that has characterized the actions of certain of that clique inward us, we might go on and make comparisons that possi bly might be odious. We might ask the question publicly which has been asked by diferent parties more than filty times recently, viz: What is the difcrence between the crimes of Jos. Gaessler and J. A. Tulleys. The one carried money away from the bank that did not belong to him; the other carried money away from the court house that, as has been proven, did not belong to him. Did they not both know that the money did not belong to them. The one is under arrest and undergoing a criminal pros ecution, the other is free as the air we breathe. The one has friends who palliate and snioothc over his action. The other being without friends, is made to suffer the consequences of hi wrong doing. Such is justice in Web ster county. Tne men who have merciles-l hounded us for the bust threo years because wo dared to champion the caue of the people and question the right of those persons to manipulate count- matters to their own advan tage, have come to grief. They havo tried every Kay that seemed safe, (and some that were not so safe,) to shut tho mouth of the Chief.
