In spite of all the clamor a-i to the
bad air of the Capital, there never haa
been in its history,, eo many people

tea-on when more houses hac been
built than in any former two veanj.

The Centennial at Yorfctown has
revived many long-forgotten incidents
and past memories of thoie who were
actors in the bloody scenes of the early
yearo of our history. A visit to the old
dilapidated vault of the Washington
family, in an open field at Wakefield,
Va., Inula it in a most disgusting and
di-.tre-js.ing condition, like the tepul-ehre-i
of most of the first families of
the F. F. Y'p. A crumbling old slab
is still found upon which, one reada
with difficulty in old-style sunken let
ters, the following:

There is good reason for believing
that the ground around the old vault
will bo improved at no distant day.
Colonel George Corbin Washington,
the fifth owner of Wakefield, commen
cing with John Washington, in exe
cuting a deed of sale of the estate to
John Gray in 1SI3 reserved si.tty feet
square at the birth-place and the
same area at the vault. These were
subsequently enlarged the birth
place to one acre anil the vault to a
half acre through the liberality of
Mr. Wilson, the present proprietor of
Wakefield. In 1858 thee reservations
were deeded in perpetuity by their
owners to the Commonwealth of- Vir
ginia, for purposes of improvement
and embellishment.
For months the people of the Capi
tal have been quietly disclosing some
plan for icmoving the unsightly tele
graph poles that arc accumulating so
rapidly as to sadly disfigure the
streets and avenues of our' beautiful
city. An ell'ort was made to run the
telegraph wites through the sewers,
but the experiment was a -failure. A
company is now being organized
under patents holjl by the National
Underground Elect! ie Company of
Philadelphia, and in a short time the
Telegraph, the Telephone, and Elec
tric Light Companies in lhe Capital
will hi; required to run all their wires
underground ?s is to be the case in
the qtiaker city. New York; Boston,
and Chicago, in each of which Com
panies are now being organized with
the exclusive right to use the patents
owned and controlled by the National
Company of Philadelphia. Public
te.-'ts. have been made with this system
in Camden. New Jeiey. and a line
has been laid in Philadelphia, calcu
lated to carry twenty cables of fifty
wires each. The system is the most
complete in the world, and it will be
but a few years till all wires both in
the cities and through the country,
will be earried underground, a great
saving of expense to the companies
and a relief to the inhabitants of
cities.
Score another for an Ohio Novelty.
This time it is Jesse Baldwin, whsc
head full of hayseed is whitened with
the frosts of Mxly-odd winters. Out
of his old carpetbag he planks down
on the counter at the Treasury,
matured hix per cent, bonds with ma
tured interest amounting to $17,I4(.i..n,
on which he demands the gold. He
was not a follower of the High Priests
of the Greenback party, and had no
use for the rag baby or paper money.
Gold, shining gold was what he wan
ted. The good natured cashier counts
him out 857 double eagles. There
was still the small sum ot $9.50-due
to him, and this was tendered to him
in silver, and he protested and de
manded gold. Again his wish was
complied with, the cashier hading
him a $5 piece, a $2.50 piece and two
gold dollars. He carefully counted
the gold pieces and packed them
away in his old carpet sack. The
gold weighed over seventy pounds
and it was a difficult task for him to
lift it or carry it away. The Treas
ury officials "put him down as a
''crank," and, fearful that he might
fall into the hands of the Philistines,
sent for a policeman, who responded
and persuaded the gold-crazed Ohioan
to express his treasure home. The
man was sane on all subjects save in
his hatred of paper money and his
love for the precious metal.
.The demands made for the redemp
tion of mutilated notes arc most
strange and curious. A man in Cale
donia, Vermont writes the Treasurer
that one cow of a number, he is una
ble to identify particularly; chewed
and swallowed the contents of his
poeketbook. There were in that
pocketbook twenty $10 bills, one $20
silver eertifieactc and a $5 note, in all
$225. There were also in the pocket
book two keys, "both of which,"
naively says the writer, "with pieces
of the book, were found upon the
ground." He wants the United States to
reimbuisc him for his loss. The
thing cannot be done. The man will
have to produce portions of the notes
upon which the cow operated before
he can recover from Uncle Sam.

The ladies, of the M. R Church met
last Saturday at the residence of Mr.
Spanogle and organized a society to be
calletC'The Ladies aid Society of the
M. E. Church." There was a "large at
tendance, ami such officers were elec
ted, and committees appointed, as is
necessary in an institution' of that
kind.
The object of this society is to
collect money to help pay the church
debt. The ladies intend to do this by
sewing and by giving an oecasiorral
entertainment in the eveninrr. - A
more extended report will be given
hereafter when this socictv shall have
adopted a constitution.
There will be tf-mceting of this so
ciety at the residence of Robert Mitch
ell on Friday afternoon of this week.
All ladies interested are cordially in

and scissors and lend us a helping
