Kaley received the nomi nation for the office of representative made vacant by the death of his brother, Hon. H. S. Kaley. The nom ination is a good one and, under the circumstances, very appropriate. The name of Mr. Kaley adds strength to the ticket and we predict for it a rousing majority over all opposition at the November election. Mr. Roach, who has held the posi tion of conductor on the "G" branch of the B: it M. for somo time, was the recipient of a valuable gold watch at the hands of h"i3 friends at the Boys' Home, last Sunday. Mr. Philips, made the presentation speech which wa3 very appropriate. Mr. Roach leaves in a few days to accept a situa tion on the U. P. R. R. DIED. At Cloverton October Jt, 1SS1, Lucy Eva, youngest child of Charles W. and Alma B. Springer, aged 3 mouths and 19 davs. ajacakasskenney howls because we published the fact that certain of the county officers manipulated county atlairs with a view to securing a re election. The reason that the im maculate ajackasskenney objects to our publishing these facts is because certain ones interested in county affairs paid him $500 to come to Red Cloud and run a paper in their inter est, and he is actuated by a laudable desire to earn his money. But what particularly inspires our contempo rary with an inordinate thirst for gore is the fact that we, as he alleges, pur posely published a wrong statement in regard to the tax levy. The jaded ass should recollect that he requested us to publish that the tax levy IimI been reduced 33 cents on the dollar, and we did so just to please him, now lie savs it is not ngut ami that we should have said that the lax-levy had in the last two years, reduced the county officers 33 dollars on the mill. We think this is absurd and positively refuse to give publicity to such state ments. If our worthy contemporary had asked us to say that the county officers had, with their little tax-levy, reduced the peoplo of the county to a state of abject poverty, we might have dono so with a very fair showing of truth, but the idea that the tax-levy has reduced the county officers 33 dollars on tho mill is too absurd to be entertained for a moment by any man who is not entirely insane. AlUri: Ascitr Zizsz Editor Chiet Deer Mir I sttcr- ded the corcus bit Saturday, and not having tiad a chance to tell to you personally my views conekcnt upon my experience there, I take the liber ty to write you in regard to it, In common with all other free Ikmti and half white American cilizcm I' have a kind of innate haukeriu arterj office, in uhich vietv. I am mo.i hap-1 py to t-ny, Miranda fully concurs. (If she didn't concur there would be war on the Wabash, sure.) Well 1 had beam that it wa-s the intention lo nominate at the corcus one justice of the pecce in lied Cloud and one on the south side of the river, ami thinks I to myself, says I; Joaiah Uradloy if you want office now is your chance, and Miranda fully con curred. I went to the corcus and commen ced settin of the pins up for a justice ofthepcece nomination and was get- tin along swimminly bavin sekoord the promise of four votes when a man with white breeches on and a angelic smile on his countiuence approached me an' says, says he; Mr. Bradley I'm a friend of yotirn and don't you ever doubt it, but it would be sooicidal for you to sekoor this nomination. Sooicidal? says I, why should it be sooicidal? After matoor deliberation I concluded to try for this nomination and Miranda fully concurred. Why sooicidal ? Then he said, lowerin of his voice and comin clus to me, says he; 'Jo.-iah Bradley if you should get this nomina tion the opposition would turn out to the polls and they would pound your talc as sure as God made little apples." I was stunned. I felt a weight op prcssin of me. I couldn't compre hend him. My intellcck I thought was not numerous enough to grasp the profound bit of political wisdom ! that had been conveyed to me, but I lied an idee that he meant I'd get beat, so thinks I, says I to myself; Miranda is a knowin woman, I'll ask her when I get hum. The announcement had the effeck of takin the wind outin my sales, and before I could rally my scattered in tellcck, both of the justices of the pecce was nominated in Red Cloud, to the manifest injustis of the people on the south side who were anxious to use me in thct capacity. When the corcus adjouncd to meet at Sol. Hopper's in ten minutes to guzzle beer, watch the county officers play pool and to gloat over my defect I slid out hum to rest my aken lied in the buzzum of my family and to draw wat consolation I could from the quart bottle which I knew was re posin serenely on the top shelf. Wen I got hum Miranda met mo at the door with smiles a bcamin through the flour and soot that had accumulated on her classick face and seys, sa3s she: "Squire Bradley I'm glari to see you hum so soon, and sober, too, I declar squire I " Squire hI, scz I. "Wat," scz she. I'll tell you wat it is, Miranda, says I,jesasl thought victory was por chin on my banner, bavin sekoord the promise of four votes a fcend in hu man form came to me and says, says he; "Josiah Bradley if you git the nomination the opposition will turn oul en masse and pound your tale as " "Pound your wat ?" says she. round my tale, Miranda sez I. Miranda is a sensible woman, she is, and she got at the troo inardncss of it in a minnct, she says, says she; Josiah Bradley dont you know that that was done to skcer you offen the track, an then she ex pinned as how . that expression about poundin tales was a phrase used in Red Cloud cxkloosively, and was meant to con vey to the mind of the intelligent can didate the fack that he would be gloriously beaten sot down on polit ically squelched as it were, an she got hot an' ed thet if I had the sense of a government mule I wouldn't be so easily skecred, an' thet she didn't keer if I never was Squire, wich ex pressions of contempt I shot right off by risin majesticly and passin yunan- imouslv the follerin resolooshun wich . has been passed thousands of time by defected candidates, and wich will be passed agin and agin as long as oppor tunity occurs for political aspirants to have their aspirashuns nipped in the bud. Here is the resolooshun: 'Whereas, it bavin come to my knowledge through a recent and pain ful experience, thet politics is a farce and office a deiushun and a snare a ignus ftu3, a3 it were, to lure the minds of the young from their proper channels, and to lead the middle aged and old fro.ru the path of trooth and virchootherefore be it Resolved, thet I, Josiah Bradle, will forever abstain from the gallin yoke of party servitude and will never more seek the honors and emolu ments of office sc so well so long as there is no hope of success." And in the above whereases and resoultions Miranda fully concurred. Mournfully yourn, Joslvh Bradley. . Rumor are afloat to the offuct that numerous independant candidate.- will present their tickols to the votors of this county at the coming election, and among them three of the present incumbents of as many officer. We are sorry to hear tuch reports and earnestly hope they are without foun dation. One of tho prcM-nt officer-', at least, signified his intention to with draw from office at the expiration of his term, and made such expressions both before and after the convention. But one of the present officers with the exception of Mr. Warren were candidates before the convention for nomination, that having been the pioper time for them to havo submit ted their names had they been candi dates, We fail to sec how any fault can be found with any of the nominees of our List convention for the nomination of county officers. The proceeding were fair and harmonious and all seemed satisfied after its adjournment. If the nominees of that convention arc not entitled to support, then there U little need of our holding any conventions in tho future. As we saiil before wo earnestly hope the rumors and reports are without foundation, but if they are true we trust the voters of the county will rally at the po'Is on the coming day of election and give every man on the regular ticket a rousing majority, thus setting a good example for the future and warning those who aro candidates for office to come out fairly and squarely face to faro before tho peo ple at the proper time and abide by the results.
