GOTTSaTTS APPEAL. Washington, Oct. 19. Scsoville, J Guitcau's counsel, lurnishes the lowing: To the Public: The trial of Guiteau is fixed for November 7tlr The short time allowed makers this appeal to the public necessary. Will the pres kindly copy it? He attempted to lecture on religious subjects through several of the northern states. It is believed that there are many people in that connection who can, if they will, furnish evidence of his insanity. Will they not do so in the interest of patriotism, justice, humanity and mercy? Patriotism, because if he is hung as a sane man, it will be an eternal blot on our history; justice, so that it may not be said hereafter that he, being denied by heaven of the guidance of reason, was put to death contrary to all law, human and divine; humanity and mercy, that should prompt laying aside of passion and dealing with this case in Christian charity. If any person knows of facts bearing on this question, will he not furnish me information ? No one will be called to testify unless it seems to be important to a just defense nnd fair trial. F20H 0T7S OWN COBBESPOSDSKT. Washington Oct., 24, 18S1. President Arthur has succeeded in keeping his own counsel as to his pro posed Cabinet, more completely than any former President. General Grant had the reputation of being the silent man, but his match is found in the new Executive, who discloses no secrets as to his future plans, even to his most intimate friends. The quid nunes of the press, and the general public think they discover indications of an entirely new Cabinet; and the pimlc will all be made plain in a few days. The sound of creaking derricks and the heavy thud of mallets has died away, on the Washington Monument, because of the failure of the Contrac tor, to furnish the iron needed to carry thy elevator skyward. Another monument has been suggested for the spot where Washington was born, at Wakefild Westmoreland, Va. A recent visit to the old estate, contain ing 5,600 acres, developed some facts not uninteresting to the general ren der. The fee simple was first eccured , .....u 1 rcmuxiuu, in The deed carries marks of great age, aim is siuck logetner in many n a p. with sealing wax The house iu w. , A Hshmgton was born, was burued 03 jnecident in December. 1779. The foundations of former buildings now burned, arc scat- tered here aha there over the whole tract. The house in which our Wash- ington was born caught fire" in the cral j-ouvenirs rc-oued from the fire are now in the hands of some of thcc of the family nnme. The chimney of the kitchen which had stood watch and ward, a solitary monument of great interest to visitors and histo rians, for ninty-eight ycan was pros trated by a gale, October 4. 1ST", and one by one the bricks have been car ried away to bv treasured a. relied by native born and foreign tsight-scer. A small free-stone fclab, 15x30 inches was placed near this sacred spot by Mr. Custis in ldl5; bearing the inscrip tion. HERE ONTHE22SD OF FEBRUARY 1732. WASHINGTON WAS BORN. Relic hunters have carried ofTthis .-dub by peace-meal. Not a veatage of it having boon found mucc 18G0, and now the Potomac in sight, six miles away, rolls on as of yore, but the his tory of the old time, mansion is all that remains to u? who are living to complete the work that Washington begun. The reign of Bayard as President protein of the Senate wan short, sharp and decisive so far as the Democratic party was concerned. True to their old history in the pat twenty years, they scored another brilliant mistake. Republicans sought to secure harmo ny by a just division of the ollicers and the committees, but seeing the chance of a temporary success in playing their hand by leaving the Sen ators from New York and Rhode Iiland out of the organization, the j Democrats put Bayard in the chair to be ejected by Davis by a majority of the Senators entitled to vote on the organization. Poor Bayard may say "Since I am so soon done for What on earth was I begun for." The Senate galleries were filled with visitors during thi Coup de Etat, anil the long faces of Democrats about the hotels indicate that there has been a funeral somewhere. The brilliant ovation given to the French nnd German visitors va? a pageant every way worthy of the nations Capital. The procession, composed of military and civic organi zations moving through our avenues, was a most imposing pageant, while illuminations by electric and calcium fol-; 1'ghfs. ami the fire-works in the cven j ing, brought out at least 0'J,0W peo- p!e to enjoy the finest display ever witnessed at the Capital, One hun dred years ago, the illustrious coun trymen of these French and German visitors fought beside our Washington in the defence of our liberty, and it is fitting that we should honor those in whose veins courses the blood of so noble an ancestry. The arrest of Parnell, and the blaze of excitement kindled thereby; is looked upon with deep interest by officials and our citizens generally. The slumbering pent-up fires that have smouldered for years in the land of the shamrock, cannot long be sup pressed. Every Irish peasant to day is groaning and longing for the birth of freedom of speech, and a liberty under lawful authority, that will break the yoke of Landlordism from the necks of millions of sorrow laden Irishmen. All down the centu ries, from the time of Pharoah to the reign of JefT Davis, God has boen uplifting men through the miracle of plagues, or the red hot ilame of war, sundering servile bonds, or melting ofi" shackles. Well will it bo for christ ian England if she shall read aright and profit by the history of the past, recorded so plainly that he who runs nray read. Phaks. PrcjTia cf the Evangelistic Wcrk of S. A.
