The editor of the Argm calls upon the Ciui:f man to "publish to the world the fact that the county levy in Webster county during the past two years has been reduced thirty-three mills." This we would be glad to do did we know or believe it to be a fact, but considering that it has been an absolute impossibility to get a state ment of any kind from the county odiccrs in regard to the county af fairs, notwithstanding the fact that the law requires it of them, we do not propose to become a party to false representations of county matter as the editor of the Argus has done. Ad mitting, for the sake of argument, that the county otlieers have reduced the tax levy in two years 33 cents, the fact remains that during the five year's previous the same officers raised the levy to more than forty cents ! We have before stated that it has been the policy of the county offi cers to reduce tho levy every two years just prior to an election, and the next year double it to make up for what was lost in their efforts to gain a re-election. This scheme is well understood by a great many tax payers. If, however, it can he shown that the powers that be have really redu ced tho levy for other than political purposes, then no one will he more ready to'publish the fact to the world than tho (5hief. In the mean time we still demantfia thorough settling up of the county's business that we all may know just how the county stands fi nancially, and know whether this boasted reduction of the tax levy w a bona-tidc reduction. We in common with a majority of the tax-payers of Webster county anxiously await a a settlement of the county's affairs and the publication of a correct state ment of its financial condition. gave a reason for her change of views. She said, "There are three classes of women, one, the firct and bet, con tains those who are bright, smart, and intellectual, who inform therm-elves on all the question of the day and who are ever ready for any good word and work. They will vote. The middle and by far the moit numerous class, consists of those whose minds arc entirely occupied with home af fairs, you ask them to go toa lecture, or to attenda meeting for public im provement, and they will excuse them.-elvcs: something after this manner, "Jimmy's socks have got to be darned," "Susan's apron finished," "or the pickles and preserves must be attended to," or, "I have got so much to do, I can't get time to go." Even cannot reach them. They would never vote. The third class, the low and vile would vote and outnumber the trood ones. "But" said one, "I think that mid dle class can be reached by the ballot." "Oh ! no," said the, "it has been tried." "Where ?" "In New Jersey." "0 ! more than a hundred years ago. We have progressed since then," said one man. "It has been tried in Wyoming," said Mr. Correll, "and all the good women vote." "That is not a fair test," said she. But we could not find out why it is not a fair test. She probably judges of the west by her knowledge of some eastern state. I agree with her, in her opinion of the first class, but it is a more numer ous class in this state than the hist one she mentions. The middle and indifferent class we have, I know but 1 think they can be reached. I can give you an in stance where one of them has already been brought out to vote at a school meeting. Red Cu)UD, oct. 7, 1SS1. Tho W. S. S. met at the residence of Mrs. Dr. Baird. Meeting called to order bv the President. Opening mu sic, a beautiful piece by Miss Laura Baird. Minutes of the previous meeting read and approved. On motion, Mrs. A. A. Baird. Mrs. J. S. Warren and Mrs.E.B. Knight were elected dele gates to the Woman's Suffrage, State Convention, to be held at Kearney. On motion it was voted that this society shall meet hereafter only once a month, on Friday evening on, or before the full moon. The President, Mrs. W B. Roby, tendered her resignation, and it was accepted. On motion Mrs. M. McNitt was elected President, and Mrs. A. A. Baird, 2d Vice-President, to fill the vacancy caused by the absence of Mrs. Dixon. Select reading and discussion on the subject, "Woman Suffrage an aid to Temperance." Adjourned to meet at the residence of Mrs. E. C. Van Auken, on Friday evening the 4th of November. E. B. Knight, Sec'y. nftbn ne.w school law and trv and elect temperance men. There was a lady whom they had no thought of asking to go to the school meeting to help them, because she wa3 cO devo ted to her home affairs. But her husband who belonged to the other party, hearing by chance what the women intended doing, said, "If those women arc coinir to the school meeting to vote, my wife can go too." The ladies were surprised to see him come into the meeting accom panied by his wife. She took a seat with the other ladies and when they commenced to ballot, he went to her and said. "Marv here is a ticket for you to vote, I have prepared it for you." "Keep it yourself," said she, "I have my ticket already, I shall vote as these ladies do." He wisely said nothing to her, but went oft muttering to himself ''Well my vote will kill hers anvwav.'I Another story has been told mo by a woman who has lived in Wyoming. In a certain town, nearly all the ladies who voted were republicans and influential temperance workers. But there was one whose husband was a democrat, and she also leaned that way herself, she did not care about voting, but her husband and his democratic friends induced her to go to the polls, and tried to impress upon her mind that it was her duty to vote as thev did, but cverv time, when she got there she would vote the repub lican ticket. This shows also that women have a greater influence over their own sex for good, than a great many men do. There was a man in Grand Island who had said and written a great deal against woman suffrage and temper ance, but he happened to want to get elected on the school board last spring, and ho went all over the town with his carriage on the day of the school meeting, gathering up the women to go and vote for him, and he did not get the temperance women either. It was this middle class he brought in, but he did not get elected after all. Betsey. 7 Per Cent. Money to Loan !
