pass up a winding illey rich in
varied scenery by a veiy heavy grade,
which would have heen deemed im
possible a few years ago. But sky
ward creeps our train, two ponderous
engines puffing and groaning as we
wind around Dump mountain, .steam
ing over bridges spanning fearful and
ghastly chasms ground out ages ago
in the glacial period. The timid
falb'rand turn pale at ight of the
awful depths over and along which
we glide on the shining steel track.
The engineer Btands with hand on the
throttle ready to set the :.ir brakes
at the first unusual jar of the train.
And down the gulches in the moun
tains dash, here and there, eilvery
streams that find their way into the
river below. At length wo reach In
spiration l'oint ten thousand fet
above tide-water, and there in this
cool and electrical atmosphere we saw
tho bright sun of the morning kissing
the dew-dropd from lofty mountain
crests still high above us, aud nestling
below ly the valley in the hush of a
breakinu twilight, and far away in
New Mexico the creat of the Spanish
Teaks were baptized with a halo of
glorious sunlight. The memory of
the peene will be undying. Words
cannot discribc Veta Tass, nor can
the brush of the artist transcribe it to
canvass. From this on the railway
parses through the San Luis Tark,
giving a view on the right of the snow
capped peaks of the Hi'n Bl.uica
mountains. We pnss through Ala
mosa on the west bank of the Rio
Cirando, and look out on a park or
plain, extending many miles in every
direction. Antonito is mioii reached,
a town noted for its ginniills. nnd as a
resort Air rouh and brigands, a
place where men do din, but painfully
often, depart with their "boots on."
The lynching a few days since of
O'Connor, a .Tustico of the Teace who
was in with all the murderers, is an
encouraging symptom, an av.iut
courier of a butter civilization.
Twenty-threo miles westward of An
tonito we reach the deep valley of tho
Los Tinos. The track follows along
the brow of the hills in a snake-like
course, sometimes doubling back
upon itself with an astonishing grade
of two-hundred and eighteen feet to
the mile. We pass Lot's wife, Than
tom curve and scores of monumental
rocks in all sort? of fantastic forms
lifting their heads high into ether.
Ere this railroad track was laid
man could not ride over these moun
tain fortresses, or wild goat scale these
diszy heights. The scene for ten
miles through the Toltie Gorge has
no equal in the old or new woild.
As we swept on around and through
these mountain crests, the moon
rode hi'h in the heavens with no
cloud to cast a shadow upon the brow
of peaks or crags, or upon tho fhining
waters "f the Ios Tinos. burnished
like a silver ribbon. 1,500 feet below
us ndewu in the tortuous valley.
Soon we reach an ovcrhaning crest of
rock and tho train darts into a tunnel
cut 600 feet through solid granite
rock Emerging, the train is stopped
upon a bridge built into the rocks and
the passengers th bated breath and
awe-struck with the grandeur of the j

peer into the awful chasm below, the
clids of rocks un the opposite rising

Woman's Column.
The Kansas State Temperance
Union met in annual session at- Bis
marck Grove, August 10. We learn
from Rev. MeBride who was present
that a large number of delegates
were present. The reform from the
different parts of the State as to the
success of Trohibition were very en
couraging. Open violation of the
law was reported from few places
except Atchison, Leavenworth, and
Fort Dodge, and it was believed that
secret violation of the law was not
more extensive than the. violation of
, I any other law of the State. The
action of the city government of
Topeka, in practically licensing the
sale of liquor, called forth can. est
discussion. A resolution was adopted
advising the agitating of the q nation
of removing the capital to some more
law-abiding city. Gov. St. John was
re-elected president of the Union. An
executive committee was elected, to
serve as means of communication
between local societies, and to seenrr
concert of action in supporting law
and order. (Jen. Cary, Rev. Dr. Ball
of Washington D. C, and other emi
nent speaker; were present. Large
audiences assembled each evening,
and the ringing addresses delivered
were greeted with enthusiasm.
