A Rt'tMAX familj' consisting of three persons was nniothcrcd to death by coal gaii at Sutton last week. The closing hours of the legislature at Lincoln lat week are said to have been better than a monkey kIiow. It is claimed that a great deal of fruit in the eastern part of the fetatc has been damaged by the cold weath er. Next week we will give a complete list of all the bills passed by the legis lature, that our readers may know the nature of all the new laws pafecri by that body this winter. A. T. Ash, of Adams county, ami District attorney for this Judicial Dis taict. died in llatings last Monthly. He was about to frtait on a Southern tour for the benefit of his health. Ih'rdette, the Hawk eye man, has made $4,000 thus far this season by his lectures. This is a ridicuously small income for a uewsynper man, but Durdettc is traveling for his health. Mr. Story of the Chicago Times is .nid to be the wickedest newspaper man in the Uuuitcd states. It might be truthfully said that he is the only wicked newspaper man now living perhaps. Tin: Jxuip City limes says that Olives eattle are dying off, and claims that it is the vengance of a just Gtal. The "vengance" has been pretty even ly distributed over the entire range the present winter. llox. Ferxaxdo Wood died recently, and Senator Matt Carpenter of Wis consin was called away lat week by the relentless hand of death. It seems that the great men of the country are all dying off, Ave haven't felt well for more than a week ourself. A Bill to amend the constitution of the state by striking out the word "male" thus giving to women the right to vote, was pass-cd by the legislature, and we suppose the proposition will be presented to the people to be voted upon at the next general election. The apportionment bill as passed gives to Webster county one represen tative, and to Webster and Franklin counties together one representative. The 23d Senatorial district is compos ed of Webster, Franklin and Nuckolls counties, and is entitled to one Sena tor. Ox the 29th, 30th and 3lst of the present month the annual meeting -of SLite Teacher's Association of Nebras will 15 held in Omaha in the nigh School building. The session promis to be one of the most interesting and profitable meetings of the kind ever held in the state The Union Taciflc has contracted for 37,000 tons of sixty-pound steel mils, 5,000 tons of forty-pound rail, twelve first class passenger coaehes, five tirst-class narrow guaage coaches,' 500 box cars, 900 cattle cars, eighteen ten wheeler, Taunton engines, and twenty-five narrow guage eugines, to he delivered during the present year. 5raa Plantiaj ii Vtaruia, 103 There were planted in Nebraska dur ing the year, as shown by returns, fifty-three million, ninety-two thou sand and eighty-eight forest frees, two million four hundred and forty thou sand and forty-six fruit frees, four hundred and sixty-four thousand four hundred and twenty grape vines. We quote official reports filet! with the auditor of the state. A veay extensive personal knowledge of what has really been done in tree planting warrants a belief that these figures arc greatly below the the fccts that many more were planted than were return ed, Ar6.
