WRITTEN AY A YOU NO MAN, A VATIEST IN THE INElMHATlfs HOME. fl'ublijhel by rrquct of the ". C.T. V ) I am looking back ihirty-ono jears to-day. I can pietute to myself a dear, loving mother looking into the face of her lirst born on. and realizing that if Cod slfould .pare her boy's? life that the dav would nine when he would have to go out into the great hu.ine-'s world and encounter the temtations of life; that then and there he concen trated both her owti life iu well a-s her I boy's to the service of :i Divine Mas ter. So the years rolled on- and at .six teen years of age I left home to go out into the great husine.s world. The ii...t morning I left home, in the piiine of youth and health, how kind ly my mother looked at me as i-he kised me, and as I went on my way with the good resolutions I formed; and the pride and pleasuie I felt as I brought home my first-earned money1 I had reason to be happy, for I hail a happy Christian home, loving father, mother, brothers, sisters, and a good employer. During my hu.ir.c..;, career I became acquainted with young men of my own age. I had noticed that at dinner they often took a glass of ale. Having an invitation from one of them to take a drink, I yielded, think ing it looked manly. It was only a glass of ale, but my first drink and the fust step towatds sin, disgrace and misery. Day after day I continued to indulge moderately, deceiving those around me. I could not see any harm in doing what I did, as others did the same. Xor did I ever believe it would get the upper hand of me, as it did in years after; but, as I look back to-day on a waited life of sin and shame, I see it alj it wsts my first drink. As 1 write this to-day I am looking out on an assembly of young men, who would be an honor to themselves, as well as to society, were it not for this demon. I have talked to each one of them, and they t-ay as 1 say, it was the firt drink that brought them to what they are. A few days ago a gentlemen left this home who three years ago stood among the first meivhatit.s of Xew York city, was rich, had a loving fam ily, and a happy home. Now he is pemiile.s, frie. ei'es a nl home e.. no one to care ioi him a wxnderer on the face of jJ's crth. V ut caused it? Tlie iir.t tlri ik. A ""w .'ays aco a mcrcha-u e.. ore i ceire"y under the intluenco of drink. Three days later I stood by las de.uh-be.l. He had known no one. since the day after his arrival here. During his deleriuni he tried io speak, but could not. Nev er shall I fo.-get the scene; a loving sister on her knees by his bedside, and a weening mother, but he knew them not. Jlis soul passed away to meet its Judge unprepared. What caused this? The iirst drink. To those of you who hear or read this, take warning? If you have commenced to drinfc, slop at onee. It will save you from a life of sin and trouble. It will make votf happy m this world; it will fit you for a better world above. Therefore 1 3.y stop -aTr "itiib God's helr. I M.
