In reviewing the work of this society
for the past year, its members feel that
though they have not accomplished all
they could have wished, yet they have
great reason for encouragement. We
commenced with but few, our members
have increased', the interest has also
increased, and there seems to be a de
termination on the part of the mem
bers to work while there is work to be
done, to drive the monster intemper
ence from our land.

Editor Chief: I had the pleasure
of being present this evening at a meet
ing of the Farmer's Clitb of this place,
and in the absence of their secretary, I
was requested to act in his stead. Not
withstanding the unplcsantness of the
weather there was a very good turn
out. Judging from appearances the
procuring of a cheese factory seemed
to engross their attention more, than
any tiling cle, but the committees not
being prepared to report, the further
consideration was postponed until their
next meeting when deflinite action is
expected to be taken.
The subject for debate before the
club was then taken up.
"Itcsohxd, that the raising of beef is
more profitable than the making of
cheese." The discussion .was entered
into very heartily by the members of
the club, many strong arguments were
made on both sides, and the thrusts of
tho difcrent opponents often causing
much merimeuL Treasurer Jones, of
Red Cloud, being present, was loudly
called for and responded in a very able
manner, taking strong grounds in favor
of the manufacture of cheese, throwing
out many useful hints which were- well
received. On vote of the club it was
decided by a large majority in favor of
the making of cheese. Tho meeting
then adjourned to meet on Saturday
evening, December 11, 1880.

U2i:-2ADSD SCHOOLS.
SuStiance cfSesorkstj Prof. iIal:ia::n.Bo
fore tho Teachers' Association.
Ladies and Gentlemen: The theme
which demands our attention is so
comprehensive in its nature, that it
requires more discretion in the selec
tion of the sub-topics,' for the present
occasion, than deliberation upon the
leading thought. In my remarks I
shall adhere strictly to the primary
department of our free schools.
The mixed school has sonic features
which commend it more highly than
any of the advantages of a graded
school could possibly do. Children re
ceive impression more readily from
those near their own age, than from
older persons. The inlluence of the
'teacher is more plainly perceptible
when it is transmitted through ex
ample, by the older pupiU - This bene
fit is to some extent, reciprocal. While
the younger children are being profited
by the experience and wisdom of the
older ones, the latter have their man
ners and feelings toned down by their
innocent associates.
Another advantage is derived from
the gradual change from one course of
study to another and the help derived
from those who are in the higher clas
ses.' I need not remind you of the fact,
that comfort of body must pieccde the
developemcnt of tho mind, or that
comfort cannot be procured without
means, but I would enstamp it upon
your intellects, and that the very high
est cultnre and refinement, true refine
ment, are as essential in the common
ungraded school as in those of a higher
order.
The adage "As the. twig is bent, the
tree is inclined" meets with universal
approval in language only. Our
actions do not corroborate our words.
While we own tluit it requires more
talent, tact and deligence in the man
agement of the younger scholars, we
hold out every possible inducement
as increase of salary, honorable men
tion, itc, to "go up higher," and but
little encouragement to remain in the
work, so well begun, as though there
were any more honorable or valuable
services than those of the strictly pri
mary teacher.
Our common school system is unique
in its nature, it resembles a beautiful
cone, but the cone is inverted.
If an unskilled pedagogue is per
mitted to guide the aspirations of the
young, is it not probable that the more
commendable desires will not be prop
erly encouraged, and that the male
volent propensities will not be "prop
erly pruned." And, in after life, as
"Each fainter trace of memory holds
So darkly ol" parted ears,
In one broad glance the soul behold,
And all that was, at once appears."
Would it not be better for humanity,
if we would foster, more tenderly, the
"intant plant," to draw out the benevo-
lent, and heroic affections, so that when
the physical vigor of manhood or
womanhood shall fail, the mind, grown
strong in the pleasing descipline of
youth,
"Still o'er those scenes, in memory
vcake,
And fondly brood with wiser care;
And time the impressions stronger
make,
As streams their channels deeper
wear?"
Let us so deport ourselves toward the
very young, iu our charge, that the re
flex shall not disturb our rest with ac
custxtions of delinquency, that its mel
low light shall disclose a pleasing pros
pect, "tho depth immense of endless
gratitude."
