election is every day growing more
intense here at the Capital. State as
sociations are in session nightly, and
tons of Republican documents arc
being sent to doubtful voters in every
Northern State. Thousands have left I
for their homes to engage in the work
of the campaign. Money is raised to
help voters unable to pay the expense
of the reduced fare given by nearly all
railroads. The work done by the Natio
nal Republican Committee thus far lvas
been four times that of any previous
Presidential campaign. Every Repub
lican agency is energized by one
thought, a peaceful victory if possible
over the frauds of the solid South.
Letter writing, Hancock, "I" and
brass buttons seem strangely mixed on
Governor's Island. The effusion of
Hancock to representatives of the
shipping interests was "gttsby." Only
106 words, yet "I," candidate, was
shoved in ten times. Hb latest ha?
12S words, and "I" is sandwiched in
with brass buttons eleven times. The
brisk air of New York harbor, and the
coming 13S votes of the Solid South,
have an exhilerating influence upon
this gushing candidate.
The Democratic party stands con
victed before the world of attempting,
in 1876, capture the government by
buying electoral votes wtb "bar'ls" of
money, sandwiched with knives, shot
guns, assassinations and murders. Will
loyal men trust them in 18S0 with their

It is no wonder that the South is solid
