men on the 'Vlill hunt" quietly laying
their plans to capture the convention.
Every representative district wants to
s-end up a man on whom they can
implicitcly rely when the soul trying
hour comes for the selection of a
United States senator. For it is a fact
that this style of electing a United
States senator i.s. the fruitful source of
more corruption, more political rotten
lies, and downright fraud than any
other feature of our free system of gov
ernment, and it is a noticeahlefact that
the old time politicians, the ringstenj
who have heen used to manipulating
these matters, are opposed to the pro
vihions of the constitution and statutory
law, which provides that the people of
the State of Nehraka may express
their pteference for a United States
senator through the hallot hox. Every
mother's- son of these fellows who can
get elected will he in the legislature,
and the rest of them will he on hand
as luhhyists, ami the first tun days after
the meeting of that hotly will he con
sumed in the matter of electing a
United State senator, at a cost to the
people of $500 per day. There is hut
one way to stop this expense and de
grading corruption, and that is for the
people to take the matter in their own
hands and send delegates to the state
convention who will see that n United
States senator i.s nominated just the
same as the memher of congress. The
people know enough to vote for a mem
her of congress and state officers, and
we will risk them on a United States
senator. It is the duty of the press to
agitate this matter from this time for

An Incident cf the "Wilderness."
At the elosc of the first tlavs battle of
the Wilderness after Grant's passage
of the Rapidan, Gen. Lee, according to
I'ollard, believed that he had com
pletely outwitted and beaten the new
commander that had ventured to
measure wit and pluck with him. He
called his Generals together and after a
council in which thee old soldiers
minutely congratulated each other
upon the prospective foot nice they
were about to enjoy with the Yankees'
backs in full view, the plan for the
next day's work was agreed upon.
The problem was how to best intercept
the flight of the Union army, strike it
here and there in flank and rear, and
cut it to pieces before it could gain a
place of tafety across the river. Lee's
orders were given to Longstreet to
make a mid march in one direction,
Hill in another and so on, to start at
the first '-crack of day."
On the other side of the picket line,
Grant had also a meeting of his corps
commanders. There were present
Meade the nomimal commander of the
army. Hancock, and others. "Gentle
men," said (2 rant, "what is your opinion
of the situation, and the course to be
pursued in this emergency?'' And they
all began to say that there was but one
course to pursue that was to effect a
retreat across the Rapidan as speedily
as possible.
"Put that in writing, gentlemen,"
replied the GcncraL Hancock and
the rest sat down and commenced
writing out their elaborate professional
opinions, that the only safety to the
army was an immediate retreat. "While
ihev were drawing up their briefs of the
situation, Grant also was busy writing.
When his Generals were ready to hand
him their productions, he had a sealed
envelope addressed to each one. He
handed them severally to the respective
officers, with the order that they .should
have the reveille beaten at two o'clock
that morning, aud when their columns
should have been formed, to open their

A Custer county stock man lassoed
a homesteader because the latter re

The German Methodist of Valley
precinct, Polk county, have a church
edifice which they bought in Butler
county, and moved to its present local
ity. The Kearney patoffice was broken

ineffectual attempt w.is made to blow
open the safe which contained $1,000
in stamps and money.
The proinies for crops in Pawnee
comity has never been surpassed at
this season. Corn is in splendid con
dition; wherever there is a poor field it
may in every case be traced to the
negligence of the farmer.
v The Elkhorn Valley railroad folks
arc pushing their grades along on both
the O'Neilf Citv and Niobrara branches,
but it is doubtful if they will reach
either point the present season.
A Kearney man offers to perform all
duties of policeman and give bond in
the sum of $1,000 for the faithful dis
charge of the duties, and charge the
city nothing for the same, taking fees
for his pay.
An epidemic seized many dwellers
on the banks of the Elkhoni river in
Dodge county. Seven deaths have
already resulted and many are pros
trated. The cause is attributed to eat
ing fish cuught in the "lakes" along
the side, of the river.
Keya Paha, which expects to be the
largest town on the 'Niobrara river, is
located on the south bank of the Run
ning Water, opposite the mouth of the
Keya Tahx river, 75 miles, northwest of
Niobrara City, and 90 miles southeast
of Fort Niobrara, on a direct line be
tween the two places.
About fifty Indians started in hot
pursuit of the raftsmen who discovered
the bod of the Indian who was mur
dered at Dakota city recently. They
drove them off, it i supposed because
they were afraid the rumor will get
ailoat that he was killed by ane of their
tribe.
