M. L. THOMAS,

THURSDAY JAN. 15. 1SS0..
At the time tho women captives taken
by the Utcs at the Meeker massacre
were returned to their friend? by the In
dian, it was given oat and published by
a number ofjournals, tho CfllEF among
the rest, that the captives had suffered
no indignity at tho hands of tho red dev
ils, This statement, it transpires, was a
mi. tale, the hellUh crime of the fiendish
Utcs was covered up for a time by that
contemptible idiot and mountebank,
Carl Schurz, Fecretary of the Interior.
Mr. Schurz Indian policy and the out
races which it indirectly brings about,
will have the effect to damn forever the
memory of that man.
The Beatrice Eprcs in sneaking of the
n flair say?: It is too much to hope that
the administration will deal with these
red devils in the manner that their recent
crimes demand, especially after it is re
membered that the true story of their out
rages upon tho helpless females captives
Mrs, Mocker and daughter and Mrs.
Price has been so carefully suppressed
and all knowledge thereof denied. Ac
cording to the direct testimony of theso
women their persons were outraged by
their red captors, and that the'r sad tale
is truo no person can doubt. That they
wcro the victims of a crime the thought
of which makes the flesh creep and the
blood ruo cold a crime so horrible, so
piukening, so fiendish, that the perpetra
tors forfeit by it all right or claim to the
protection of an already too lenient gov
ernment. The law can hardly punish
such a crime; yet it remains for the horror-stricken
people of Colorado, particu
larly, and of the country generally, to in
sist that the most swill and terrible pun
ishment be visited upon these monsters,
even if it be the extermination of tho en
tire tribe, which in the perpetration of
the crime and tho shielding of the guilty
ones has forfeited all claims for further
leniincy or protection from the govern
ment. Carl Schurz, in concealing theo
facts, in shielding the Indians, and in
pratiog about tho success of ''my policy"
meantime, can scarce be considered in
any other light than that of particcps
criminis, and should be a loathsome eb
ject of disgust to the entire country, but
what is now doniauded ot him is that he
lay otido his pig-headed, sentimental fool
ishncsi, and lend a hand iu administer
ing a punishment that shall be both sure
and swift. Tho people of tho west, who
have too often with their own eyes seen
the true side of the Indian, will not
much longer submit to this puerile,
driveling sentimentalism, which has
niade the Indian Bureau an abomination
in the-eyes of tho entire country.
Monday morning the Union Pacific
railroad surveyors commenced the pre
liminary survey of a now line of road
from this city southwest. This projected
road will traverse this county south and
west, passing through Kearney county
and ou southwest to Denver, or to a con
nection with the Kansas Pacific, opening
up a section of the finest agricultural
country in the west, and make Hastings
a still greater railroad center.
We will, as the survey progresses, and
as soon as other information can be ob
tained, lay the same before the Gazette
readers, keeping them informed of the
progress made by this line of road which
promises so much for the future welfare
of Hastings. Gazette.
Our WasMngton Letter.
Washington, D. C. )
Deo, 31st, 1879. J
That General Grant is having a good
time here among his old cronies is very
evident. They are feasting and enter
taining him in a quiet way which still
provokes contrast with the noise and
hurrah of his other receptions. The
opinion is growing stronger that his
friends advises cessation of gieat public
shows in his behalf as dangerous to the
Presidential boom. There is no question
that the men who have been allowed to
"run him" have injured him to some
extent.
If we were to take tho opinion of them
selves entertained by the small let of
Greenbackers in Congress we should con
clude that they could contest the action
of that body. They threatca all sorts of
legislation on the financial question, and
among the things they expect to do is to
pass law, limiting the future refunding
operations of the Treasury Department
by adopting 3 J per cent, as the highest
mtcrtst to be paid oo any new bods is
sued. I do not believe there is any pros
pect of their success in this or any other
of their pet schemes for agitatloa, po
litical capital is aboat all they hope to
obtain by this method.
An Indian war seems inevitable, from
the conversation of Government officials,
and Secretary Schurz has about made up
his mind that peace talk k a failure.
He is harshly criticised is some quarters
for the feebleness of his policy.
That the negro exodus is a living re
ality is proved by the numbers of colored
people continually going through Wash
ington to the North.
The abscDee of the President whil
General Grant is making his visit here is
the ocoasiea of some disagreable fceliag.
