The Leader is worthy of note, as it is a paper which is the political organ of its eoiior. Hon. W. H. Astiby, a gen tleman hitherto of no neati siguilk-ance in the politico of the dtute. It a'.co is observing of attention, as it is a paper conft'S-ed'y devoted to the advancement of an idea. Tho Captain U gtappliug with the railroad problem, aud the last is.uc contains an ublo presentation of his theory of the management of railway transportation. Hi plan is that as a railroad difTerf fruin no other road save in tho fact that it requires more skilled labor and Wdtchfull ness to make it suitable to the vehicles to he dtawn upon it, it thould bo like other highways, the pioperty of the pub lie. In other words he would disunite the properly in tho road, ftom the prop erty in the carriages tint are driven upou it. This would appearautiy bring com petition into the field, but we aro not ure that this would be tho lesult. The ocean is a free hi.rhw.iy to whoever wishes to Use it, but th re is no more competition at New York for ocean transportation, th-tn there U at the sitae place f.tr railway transportation, as many Hue of railroad conter iu that city, as tht-reare lines of steamships. It is probable that eventually railroads ill be publio high-ways, but that it costs so much tocirry a bushel of wheat four tluHi.-and miles is not so mush to be won dered nt, as that a bushel of wheat can be proQtably carried that fir at all, It certainly could not be transpirted three hundred miles in u wjgou without eating itself up, and that it can now be carried so lar is a matter of congratulation. In a uew undeveloped country, it may be questionable whether such a courso would be wise aud expedient, privat enterprise has proved to be more efficient in the developement of new territory into a state than public wealth. Private inter est las given every improvement in the arts, and in life tho r03t timely, ready, prompt, aud vigorous assistanco. The public moves slowly and with great hesita tion, until the private indidvidual interest of its leading spirits is aroused. Military Governments have construc ted roads for the transportation of its troops. But seldom have Governments or the public constructed any roads in volving considerable outlay for the pur pose of facilitating exchange--or providing transportation, unless either private in terest had been enlisted or tho needs of the community imparatively demanded it. TCC3--QTC 3aT. I do not wish to pick a quarrel or have any bickering with the editor of the Argus. Nor will I allow a quarrel to be forced on me. If he delights in criticism he is full welcome to all the graification which he may derive from criticising niy articles, which little game he may p ay to his heart's content unmolested by me. provided the public interests are not in juriously effected thereby. In the few re marks, which appeare 1 io the Chief on the subject of a new school house, fr Red Cloud, and which were writen solely in the interest of education, because written in the interests of the attendants of the school pupils, teachors. and super-1 intendent, and thcrfore ii the interests 1 of tho public, I may have comrritted 1 some mistakes, I had not, I acknowl edge, consulted the tch.tol law .on the subject ere penning the article and there fore was not posted as to the amount of bouds which the law allows each district In icciia frir. rli ntr.nAaa .f 1. .?!.!?. From a late copy to the Crete Union we quote a portion of an interesting arti cle on the.-e well known nur.-eries, loca ted 3 miles .uut beast of Crete, on the ea-t bank of the Big Blue, aud statted io 1572 by Mr. Stephens. A successful nursjry nat then an ex periment; it is now i fixed fict. The farm of I'J cre. is surrounded with oage orango ami houy locust hedges and willow wiixlhrakt-s. We examined tho hedges ctrefuiv. an 1 could tntw'e but little difference in the growth, an 1 w-re told that the honey locu.st wa? the hard e.-t, yet our judgement passed in favor nf the o:ice ora ige, on account of the evjtt ne." of its growth and its compactness. Five miles of hedges and about thirty acresof alude and oruninentai trees are growing pro-perouely. The nursery his been divided into deptrtmonts, and everything is run on a systematic plan Mr. otephuns tsjreneral superintend tut; Mr. Jlooieo Uoge ha charge of the tntiti poitiou of the tojk; Mr George Bugbei' has control of th; small fruit growing and maiketiug; Mr. Burncy lu.s theoruaiun tal atock tin ler his guidance; Mr, J. Many of his trees bear before they arc live years old, and ha thiuks it s-fe to atssert, will yield fruit as quick in Nebraska as any state in the Union. Mr. S. has taken good care of his trees and has been well repaid for his trouble. lie received tho Grt prizo two years ago from the ntate horticultural society for the most successfully idauted orchard. He planted 1,100 trees, and on inspect ion iu the fall every tree but five was liv ing. L-ist year, the Crete nnrsiries booked $15 500 for their spring and fill trade. They are expecting an uupiece deutial de-nand next .season, and aro pre paring for it. This winter his men are grafting, iu a Worm cellar, 200,000 app e grafts. Mr. Stephens has catalogues giving instruciiius to pur chasers, and cotita.uiug much valuable information; and we hope Ncbraakans wid patronize Nebraska nurseries. Having large cellars and a heavy stoc on Itaud. they cm furnish stock from two to three weeks earlier in the buriac than can be procured ftom any point in the eat. Those interested should drop a cud to the Crete nurseries, and they will receive a catalogue, and instructions how to plant, or any other iuformatiou desir ed.
