One of our subscribers who is a con scientious christian gentleman says that wkile ho and his neighbors aro perhaps mean enough to cheat each other, they are not mean enough to try to cheat God out of one of his laborers by contaminat ing his priestly garb with the political slime of the county superintendents office. We only tried to write one artiole this week and while we were writing it; sot less than a score of candidates and politicians dropped into the office, one at a time, "just to have a little chat." We have swore off, we won't try to write any thing longer than a three line local again until "this cruel war is over." Mr. Grubb feels confident that figs can be successfully grown in this valley, and proposes to test the matter to his satisfaction. He has a number of young fig trees growing finely,' on hh farm on Elm Creek. A disgraceful street fight occurred last Wednesday morning between Wm. Mosherand Hjtcheock, the blacksmith. I naval, Sept. f, 1879. Mr. Editor: Whilst the wire-pullers and politicians are preparing for the cov ing capaign, it may be interesting to the readera of the CuiEf to learn buw one of our county officers waa "givea away" by a friend. The next day after an election I met two men at Mr. N. Ayers. and be ing informed 'hat they lived in Harmony precinct, I asked some questions about the election which they cheerfully an swered, and one of them after telling me bow be voted raid, "I did not know any thing about tbe men, but 1 know Mr. Jones, I think be ia a fine man. he threw off the interest on my taxes and told me about them." Or perhaps it might be equally interesting to tharn to know how one of onr county commissioners before he learnt that all important phrase. "I don't know, hut I'll ask Al," put me on the track of how our county clerk and com missioaers have brcn "pulling the wool over the people eyes." If any of your readers wishes the de sired information, I will furnish it in a futuro issue of the Chief, together with how to pay taxes with a note that is not due nor expected to be paid when due. Chief : Politics runs high in In avale just at the present time, at least I should think so, from the way the men discuss it. Wherever we see a little knot of men collected togeth'er we may be sure they are talking politics, and their talk is interminable, or so it seems to U3 womeo, but we have no interest in it, because we are told by the lords of creation, "it is out of our sphere." We are at present engaged (besides our usual avocations) in preserviag and pickling the products of the soil, und we do not have time for our usual visiting and gossip, therefore I have not much news for you. If the men could only by persuaded to give us the ballot, we should soon work a great re form in politics and there would not be as much trouble as there is now. Perhaps yot are not aware. Mr. Editor, that wo have a paper published here, it is called the Inavale Palladium, and is an organ of the Good Templers, which order is in a thriving condition. But about the crops. In tke words of an old song. "Our potatoes, they are small." The corn that was planted in its season, between the 5th and 15th of May, is a good crop, but that which was plant ed early and late ia very poor. Onions, a splendid crop, all other vegetables are very good. Bktset. Our Washington Letter. Washington, D C, ) Sept. 3, 1879. f That we are to fight Mr. Tildeo again is becoming more evident every day. The Baltimore Sun of this morning says: "Yesterday and today brought to the city a number of Democratic congressmen, officials and politicians fram the White Sulphur Springs, where they have been rustic atine during tbe summer. One of the number, who is a journalist as well an official, says that he made it at point during his stay to talk with all of the many publio men of prominence from the South who vitited the Springs on the subject of the next presidency front the Democratic standpoint From what he heard he is firmly of the opinion that the South favors the nomination of the old ticket of Tilden and Hendricks. He does not believe that there is any special love for Tilden among the Southern people, but they seem to feel that be is the man that can win. It may yet porxfe our Democratic friends to show how a man for whom "there is no special lore," can be the strongest man in the election But, as Gen. Grant said, the Democracy may be al ways counted upon to make a blunder. The public debt was reduced three and a half millions in August. But for the ar rears of pension act, the reduction would have been raaeh greater. Payments un der that act will be- eon pie ted this year, and, with increasing revenue and cus toms returns, the debt will be materially reduced thereafter. The only possible troable will be in profligate expenditarea by the Democrats daring the brief time they will hold poesessioa of Coagress. There are- ahead? rumors of schemes for enormous expenditures to be made with a view of aHia the Democracy ia the Presidential election next year.
