Mrs. Newhouse, wife of tbe new merchant likes the CniEr and lakes it a ' year on trial. Tbe goods in tbe Post Office cloth ing store are being boxed for shipment back to Ashland. We have been to the country re cently and was gratified with the splen did appearance of tbe crops. Who is chairman of the county Re publican Central Committee? It n't it about time that gentleman was coming to the surface. Communications sent in for publica tion this week have had a poor show on account of tbe Blue Hill article. More room next week. We had the pleasure of a call last Tseeday from Gen. J. C. McBride, ex State treasurer, and editor of the .Ne braska Farmer, A mule team belonging to a farmer ran away in Red Cloud last Monday with the wagon, they collided with one of Uncle Sam'a hitching posts and stopped We feel called upon to announce that Red Cloud has not been swallowed up by an earthquake as yet, though in all probability it will be-the next thing in order. When at Cowles the other- day we w(ie asked if any one was making brick for sale at Red Cloud, and the same in quiry has been put to us since, a number of times. If you have brick for sale, let it be known. Daring the rain storm last Monday evening the building south of Mr. Rich ardson's house, known as the "Turkey ranch" was struck by lightning. No ono was hurt and the building escaped with little damage. A washout on the railroad between Cowles and Blue Hill last Monday eve ning cansea a dei..y in tbe arrival or trains, aod the mail that was due here on Monday evening did not arrive until Tuesday evening. The break has been repaired and trains are new "on time." t The fourth, the glorious fourth has gain passed with its lemonade, tumult and noise. There was a large crowd of ' people at Red Cloud on the 4tfa, to hear Judge Geelia orate and to see the fun, and all seemed to enjoy themselves huge- ly, which is highly proper on such occasions. A little unpleasantness occured on the evening of the 4th between the town Marshall and Mr. Zeiss, but no serious damage waa done; one or two arrests was aside, and ia view of the fact that a kw-suit or two will result, we refrain from cotasttitiag open the occuranoe 'for the present, and await future de- 1 velopmeats. The Rev.?) Patter writes ia the Argm again and says that when the Chut writes about him it is doing a good turn for the eaase of Christ. We eaost heartily agree every time a cant ing hypocrite is shown up in his true -light the cause of Christ is surely ben ' fted. The best part of it all is, the Rev. wants to work for the sou) of the IChep. Whoop 1 we feel liko bwioging our old hat in the air and flaunting our tattered garments in the breeze. Concerning Final Proof. A greater part of those who have filed a notice of their intention to make final proof, presume that they are compelled to be at the Land Office, to offer such proof, at the expiration of thirty days from the date of the "notice of publica tion." Thiii is a mistake. They may appear at any time thereafter, provided the seven years limitation does not ex pire, at tbe expiration of thirty days. No proof will be heard or considered un til the notice has been published fivo consecutive weeks, and an affidavit to that effect from the publisher is on file in the Register's office. Parties had therefore better not wait until tbe seven years has expired, but file their intention immediately after the fivo years ha ex pired, and then offer their proof at any time during the next two years. Smith Co. Pioneer, BubsrriM. About this time would take a corn knife and go over the rows cutting off the tips of the new growth. This keeps them within. bout as, causes them to throw out laterals and bear more freely, than if allowed to grow at will, when 3 feet in bight ia the proper time to clip the tip.s, in addition to causing tbo bush es to set more frai t buds they are kept of manageble rise to be mulched for winter. Should these laterals grow more than 2J feet, it will be well to clip the tips of them. The led varieties of rasherries must not be allowed to sucker too freely. Keep them in hills allowing but 5 or 6 canes to each. If allowed to grow a dense mass of bushes, but little fruit arill be obtained. Those who grow only a small plat in exposed locations would do well to support them by stakeine or bv stakes and light pole?, or wires on each side of row. This season the Furncr is finest flavor ed of all, not quite as hardy as the Mam moth bushes but much better quality. After the middle of Jane, mulching with corn stalks, hay or straw is better thnn cultivators on small plats, retains mois ture and keeps ground coo). If it .is desired to propagate plants from the Black Cap or Tip varieties, about August 1st or whenever the tips get woody, bend the bushes and set the tips 4 inches deep behind a spade. Plants are readily and rapidly propa gated in this way but less fruit is ob tained the next season. Blackberries need substantially the same care in clip ping tins of new growth to stocky and fruitful. Do not allow them to become a dense mass of bushes. Keep in nar row rows for convenience in piokicg and greater fruit fulness On approach of winter, mulch heavily with straw or hay. We find the Snyder most reliable. . F. Stephens.
