ty from said R. R. Co. Mr T . says
'Gentlemen: The R. R. Co. will uot
submit to all the taxes you claim from
the fact that a portion of it is exorbi
tant and unjust; neither can you collect
one cent by litigation, as the reports
of assessors, together with other irreg
ularities, do not show that their fig
ures represent anything more than so
msny number.-, instead of represent
ing dollars, and cents; But we are
willing to do "thas" aud "ee," if you
will cancel all taxes against us up to
January First, 1878."
The commissioners then consult an
able lawyer who advises them to set
tle on some terms, and coroboratea
tho statement made by Touzalin
What could they do hut settle on the
best terms they could? certainly, no
thing. Again, is it not better to take a sum
of money expended in improvements
for, the county than to take about baif
that sum in money? What would
$4,000 amount to each individual is
the county, bybeing equally distributed
among them? Comparatively nothing.
