The aumsixgost "event cf the
season," referring, of course, to the
party the sheet aud pillow case party,
you know was brought successfully
to pass last Weduesday, in the dining
room of mine jolly host, Rcnnacker.
According to directions given us by
the inestimable young ladies who man
aged the affair, we, in company with
several others, disguised our features
in a luahk of white cloth, and then
further costumed in a sheet, with a
pillow case over our head aud one in
casing each arm, we betook ourse.f to
the appointed place and what a right
was theic!
" 'Twcrc worth ten years of peace
ful life,
Ono glance at their array !"
Aud then, the sounds! English
.can do thcai no justice; but, in the
ringiug words of the old bard of Cam-
;bia:
"(iwrynch y Slandrygwynth wyd-
fenzigg brolch,
Shunwaer cwewynddinawr dywr-
coed iwiclch."
A pleasajitly uproarious time wan
spent till supper, all enjoying them
selves trcuicnduoualy, or at least,
seeming to, but really it sint much
fun lo ki.-s a girl when you den't know
what gill it is, or even that it is a gitl,
anyway. Mostly for this reison, but
.ostensibly for greater convenience in
eating, the masks were removed with
the advent of the refreshments.
Then came a few rounds of II nth
and Jacob. Ruth despairingly calling
for her Jacob, who, erstwhile, lud
slipped from uudcrncath her arms,
and then grotesquely trying to "head
him off" in the opposite dinction
jfroii) which he aright be going.
And thus, with merry games and
the rippling (and sometimes roaring)
music of mirth,
"The happy hours, en aiifels wings,
Fkw o'r us aud our dear.es,'"
as all, including the married ones, who
gave their cucouraging presence, can
,'it'Mify.
Long may the young ladies prosper
and what next will vou give u; !

The success of the leading literary
.paper of the Wes,t, the Chicago
Ledger, is truly remarkable. Since
its introduction to the reading public,
.six yea: sago, the Ledger has steadily
.advanced in favor, and is now ac
knowledged second to uo paper of the
kind in the country. Its circulation
is national, and has been obtained
through the offorts of its publishers
.lo produce a paper of high moral
character, and at the same time sell it
.at a price consistent with the present
hard times. That they have succeed
ed, and well, too, the thousands of
readers of the Ledger scattered from
Maine to Texas and from Oregon to
.Florida will bear testimony. The
Chicago Ledger is a large forty-eight
column weekly naper, which contains
stories both complete and continued,
in each number, written by the best
authors of the day, and a great variety
.of information -interesting to every
.one. The subscription price ot tho
Ledger is only $1.50 per year, postage
jiaid, and ittis equal in every particu
lar to other papers of the same char
acter which sell for $3 a year. Three
copies of this valuable paper will be
sent to any one who sends 10 cents
and their address to the Ledger, Chi
cago, 111.

you an idea of the weather I will tell
you what I have been doing the last
two weeks. I have been gathering
apples; have- been grubbing a few
days to learn the. art of grubbing. I
have just finished digging a lot of po

farmer near Salem sows '40 acres
