On Fridsy last we took passage with omr County 8nperintendent, Mr. Pope, in company with himself, Mrs. H. A. Howard and Miss Julia King, and started for Guide Rock, to attend.the Teachers' Association. His team, a lively span of ponies, quickly brought M orer the road, and we rode up be fore the Guide Kock House, where our host Mr, Ssbin was ready to wel eame us. We psrtook of a bountiful supper, when we started for the school house. Arriving there we found a few teachers and citizens awaiting our arrival. Being disappointed ia hav ing no lecturer, the evening passed pleasantly away with an exercise in grammar and a spelling match. We returned to the hotel, and soon were snuelv beneath the sheets. Some of our company thought they were par tial to the editor by giving him a bed near the stove, in tbe same room, but we think it was all iifht and com mended our host for his good sease thus displayed. Esrly next morning we started out to take in the town and its environs. We first called on A. Garber & Co., whom we found busy at their counters, and, judging from their well-filled shelves, and piled up counters, we should say that they are the principal dealers in town. We secured a good bill of job work and passed on. John L. A ance next claims our at tention as a dealer in groceries, drugs, medicines, paints, etc, and appears to be doing a rushing business. He pat ronises the CniEF now, with the In ter Oeemn. We had not time to visit all the business houses in town as it was nearly time to go to the institute again. But we learned that Selleck & Martin, blacksmiths and wagon makers, are turning off some good work in their line. A. Lathrop also carries on a shop at the old stand for merly occupied by Mr. Myers. A M. Talbot is one of onr most en terprising farmers; as his groves, cattle and bojjs will attest. He was busy Saturday in looking after the wants and comfort of the teachers, and we would say just here, that for genial hospitality, openly expressed, we doubt if any town in the west is ahead of Guide Rock. The teachers will remember it with pleasure. We almost regretted thot one body was all we could furnish with food and lodgiag The Bailey Brothers were all out, and they are alive to the interests of edicatioa. The exercise of the As sociation on Satirday were varied, in cluding Physiology, by Mr. Pope ; Grammar by Mr. A. Bailey; Arith metic by Mr. J. Bailey ; Map Draw ing by Mr. Springer; Orthography by Mr. Craw, and Select Reading by nearly all present. It was the first association of the kind that we ever attended where there was neither sioging or de votional exercises for opening. The exercises were all good, and much instruction was given. Considerable exception was taken to Mr. Craw, fof-hrowing eut the Italian a in Orthoepy and giving short o for its substitute, also for pronounc ing calm, aim, 4c, with short a. His lesson was quite radical, taking for his authority such authors as are now aut of date, almost eatirely. The Association closed its session ot 4 o'clock after voting to meet next month at Iaavale, in Dist No. 6. Red Cloud was virtually voted oat of the question as a point for holding anything of the kind. This was rather hard, but we cannot blame the Association for its action. We took supper at Mr. Sabin's again, and aboat half past 5 started for home, our party being increased by Mies Wilsoa. We arrived about 9 p. an., cold and tired aad ready to settle down again to the sober rela tions ef every-day life. An Sxtrtfrflisary Stnttase. The following extract is taken from a sentence recently pronounced by Judge Readiog, of Morris, 111., upon the liquor dealers who had violated the law by selling liquor to minors : 'By the law you may sell to men and women, if they will buy. You have given your bond and paid your license to sell to tbem, and no man has a right to molest you in your legal business. No matter what families are distracted and rendered miserable ; no matter what wives are treated with violence; what children starve or mourn over the degradation of a pa rent, your business is Iegalired and no one may interfere with von in it No matter what mother, may agonize ever the loss of a son, or a sister blush at tbe shame of a brother, jou have a right to disregard tbem all and pursue your leeal calling you are licensed ! You may fit up your lawful place of business in the most enticing and cap tivating form. You may furnish it with the' most costly and elegant equipments for your own lawful profit; you may fill it with allurements of amusement ; you may use all the arts to induce visitors ; you may skillfully arrange and expose to view your choicest wines and most captivating beverages; you may then Induce thirst by all contrivances to produce a raging appetite for drink, and then you may supply that appetite to the full, because it is lawful ; you bare paid for it you have a license. You may allow boys, almost children, to frequent your saloon; tbey may wit ness the apparent satisfaction with which their seniors quaff the spark ling glass ; you may be schooling and training tbem for the period of 21, when they too, can participate, for for this is lawful. You may hold the cup to their lips, you must not let them drink that is unlawful. For while you have all these privileges for the money you pay, this poor privilege of selling to children is denied you. Their parents have the right to say, "Leave my son to me until the" law gives you privilege to destroy him. l)o not anticipate that ten ible moment when I can assert for him no further rights of protection. That will soon be enough for me, for his mother, for his Mster, for his fnends and for this community to see him take hi? road to death. Give him to us in bis child hood at least. Let us have a feir hours of his youth, in which we can enjoy his innocence, to repay us in a small degree for the care and love we have lavished upon him. This is something which you who now stand prisoners at the bar have not paid for; this is not embraced in your license. For this offence, the court sentences you to ten days' imprisonment in the county jail, and that you pay a fine of $75 and costs ; and that you stand committed until the fine and costs of this prosecution arc paid." The secretary invites correspondence from all portions of Nebraska giving definite information of locations and fmces of township tracts of land or arge bodies adapted tor colonization purposes. The county authorities of every county should be active boards of immigration in absence of any state organization. We appreciate your interest in the work for which the East and West have a mutual interest for the benefit of our common country. We are aware also of the advantages and the promise of your thriving state, now being added to the list, which will be in history a marvelous phenomena of rapid development I hope to leave with a committee on Tuesday eveniog f.r the West and South to investigate facilities most fa vorable for colonies. Probably we shall reach Omaha about the 25th, when I expect a conference with yon and the advantage of your information. The enterprise has been received here with unanimous favor and, I am confident, it will be quickly developed when locations of land are viewed.
