From Chambers' Journal. TJie Kuni Stonewall. History of Its .Sale to the Japanese Gov ernment -A. Curious Mury. llev. E. 11. Ilendrix, in his highly in- Wieating letter on the Japanese, men tioned the fact that the celebrated ram Jiwit UJ n tin fib JJl3Cllb UW1JCU UJr the Japenese Government There being a little tale connected with the arrival of the "Stonewall " in 't;t, ,,.., 11" .....a ., ,.rr.,...t ,..,,.. ,..1 I... ppan, which may interest the readers or your paper, J will relate it The Confederate ironclad ram 'Stone wall" after the unpleasantness, into the hands of the United States Navy De partment and was, in Jti;7, sold to the Tycoon of .Japan for $1,500,009. The money was paid out of the private funds ) the Tycoon, and one of the most trust worthy oilicers of the United States Na vy, Commander lirown, was granted one year furlough to accept the position of commander of the "Stonewall" and I convey her to the Japan empire. This was a very hazardous undertak ing, but it was nevertheless accomplish ed, and the voyage around the Cape of food Hope, if properly told, would fill a volume. In lSto the Southern Daimois of Ja pan, jealous of the prominence the fam ily of the Tycoon had enjoyed in the empire for many generations, captured the Mikado, then atTokio (not the pres ent Tokio which then was called Jeddo) 2i declared war against the Tycoon, who at that time resided in Osaka. The Tycoon escaped from the city, and his castle was fired bySatsuma's ariny. To give you an idea of the construc tion of said cjistle, I will say that some of the stones comjiosing the wall around it were of the following di mensions: Sixty feet long by forty broad and twenty thick. There being no stone of that description found within fifty miles of Osaka, it is impossible to understand in what manner they were conveyed to Osaka at the building of said castle. The Tycoon fled to the northern prov inces of the empire, and the Daimios then aided him with an army. Arms ami munitions of war were sold to both parties by English and American resi dents of Japan, Well, the war was ra ging nicely; nobody could tell who would win, when, one lino morning, the Tycoon's iron-clad, "Stonewall," steamed into the haibor of YuXuhonw, nying .i. T coo: s ensign on the peak, and t'ie Star Spangled banner on the fore. Of course everybody in YoKahama knew of the sale and departure of the "Stonewall," by the American papers, and expected .she would be turned over to the Tycoon's agents, who already were awaiting her arrival. But they were not diplomats, and did not seethe grease in this arrival. The American Embassador then in ijipan saw his opportunity and im proved it. The agents of the Tycoon were told that, as the "Stonewall" had not yet Japanese papers, she was yet an American vessel, and the American Em bassador would take charge of her for the time being; "just wait a few days, and all would be satisfactory," etc. American man-of-wai's-men took cJWiirge of the ram and the Southern Daimios were privately informed (of course, not by the Embassador,) that the "Stonewall" was in Japan. An Ameri can missionary horrified at the prospect of the war being prolonged by the addi tion of the Stonewall to the Tycoon's forces, anxious that the sacrifice of hu imfn lives should be stopped, and more anxious still to get his finger in the pie in the hope of finding a plum, became the go-between in the case, and the di plomatic brain of the American Embas sador being properly greased by the ap plication of 8150,000 worth of lubrica ting material, Vattell on International Law was opened and the Tycoon lost the nrni "Stonewall." The ship laid in fUe harbor of Yokohama for some time, and when the grease was dried up and the Missionary had sent his drippings ($10,000 worth) home, the vessel for which the Tycoon had paid with his own private money was turned over to his enemies and aided in giving him the finlfting blow in the battle of Hakoda di St. Joseph News. A rope and inillev had to be used to elevate the suf ferer so his bed could be changed. He died Saturday morning, at the age of seventy one years. There have been cases of elephantiasis arabum in this country, but none so serious as this. Generally the disease has settled in the leg only. The peculiar sffliction is known in the West India Islands, in Brazil, and other South American coun tries, also in Japan and Egypt Physi "Tlans from various sections of the coun try have visited Mr. Featherstone to witness the peculiar characteristics of the disease. Various people have various ambi tions, for which there is no accounting. for, or even to enumerate. The partic- , ular case just now in mind is that of an J Albany boy, aged 18, named Garry JJn- son. The object of his life thus far J seems to be the rescuing of j)eople from the embraces of the treacherous waters of the Hudson. Within the past five years he has saved from death at least a dozen people, and that without fee or reward. He does not set up to be a hero either, but is rather reticent about narrating his adventures. He is a strong, stoutly built young fellow, with black hair and eyes, a round face, and skin , which shows much exposure to the weather. He lives at 390 1J road way. He has worked about the river a great share of his life, and loves the water like a duck. For some time he hag been in the employ of the Mutual Boat Club, alout their house and loata, but just now in the dull season is employed on the new capitol. A reporter of the Evening Times had an interview with him the other day, but found itextreme lydifficult to makeanything sensational out of his very modest matter-of-fact story. Saving human life was with him t such a matter of course that really he could hardly recollect even the names of those who owe to him the continuance of their earthly existence. About five yearsago he said, he fished out the first one, a boy named Fitzpat rick, up in the basin. He was in swim ming, and, in getting him out, Garry came near going under himself, and caught a frightful cold. Butone learns by experience. In May, 1872, two girls named Scher merlqm and Conners, about thirteen or fourteen years old, were in the boat in the basin near the elevator and close to the dock; they began fooling, the boat upset, and both were thrown into the water. Garry, happening to be near, plunged in and saved them. In July, 1873, William Piatt and Wm. Allen were rescued by Garry, near the end of the pier; they were young fel lows in swimming. In July, 1S76, Benjamin Klupand .las. Keuny (Garry was not quite certain about the names) were in a boat when a boy, chased by the police for being in swimming, jumped into the boat, which uDset, and both were thrown into the water. Garry saved them, as he did be fore a younger brother of Kenny, last summer. Last summer John Flood, of Scnmton, Pa., while drunk, fell into the river and was pulled out by Garry. Last winter Thomas Haggerty. also drank, fell in at the foot of Hudson av enue. Garry was standing at the corner of Broadway and the avenue. Benson is poor, and a little money would go a good ways with him. He said he had noticed in the papers that a young fellow in Xew York, named O'Xeil, who had sa ed only two or tnree lives, had been given gold medals and a good position. Why cannot as much be given for Albany's life-preserver, Garry Benson ? A Ibany, (N. F.), Timet. Lincoln and Lee. The Oflfor to Gen. Lee or the Command of the the United States Army. In IStiS several years after the war a Senator in Congress had the temerity to make the charge that Gren. Lee had applied to President Lincoln for the command of the Federal army destined to invade and subdue the Southern States, and being refused, from pique and resentment he turned and offered his sword in aid of the Southern cause, and thus was raised to the chief com mand of the rebel forces. On the in stant Mr. Reverdy Johnson, of Mary land, himself a union man, denounced the statement as untrue, sayuwr, altho he had not the authority of the accused to deny it Gen. Lee's lofty character and unstained honor alone sufiicied to repel the charge. This furnished the occa- r Tinann nor. alone the conclusive proof of the incorrectness of the charge, but the clear evidence that he had him self declined, from a stern sense of duty and lienor,- the very preferment which he was falsely accused of coveting. None can tell the extraordinary story in better terms thau Gen. Lee himself, as contained in the following modest and characteristic letter addressed by him at the time Reverdy Johnson, who not long before his death vouched to the contributor its entire authenticity : "Lexington, Va., Feb. 25th, 1SCS, 1T11 UWUUUWAAt Vw w Hon. How Lonjr Will the Forests Last? Under such a tremendous yearly drain, the question naturally comes up, how long will our forests hold out at the present rate of manufacture? It is really an important question, upon which follows the inquiry as to what we are to do for building material when this magnificent wood pine is ex hausted. One authority after another has entered formally upon its solution, with satisfactory results in local in stances, but very vague ones as to the field at large. At the rate jwe are cutting it to-day, from thirty to fifty years sejm to be agreed upon as about the limit. Twenty years ago there, was apparently no limit, for the consumption was not only less, but the raeas for its manufacture were primitive, and accomplished much smaller results than now. Ic seems as if it were impossible to further improve the machinery of saw-mills; but the near future may, for all that see saw ing machinery in comparison to which that of the present will be coniemptible. So, although twenty years ago there was no foreseeing the end of the timber, now, with the modern mills and myri ads of them, we are beginning to cal culate with dire certainty as to the time when the "Wooden Age" will be a thing of the past.
