-& -'.. -V .riE RED CLOUD CHIEF LOCAL MATTERS. Noticrsin tins Column 10 Cmts n Line Lecture Friday nTrTit. Ohio hns rone Democratic. Go to llic lecture Friday nijrht. ricnty of rain for tl c last- week. Do not fail to attend the lecture Fri day night. Thi.sis court week, and business is brisk in Red Clud. "Heaps" of strappers in town this week tending court. Tho Rev. 1'rycc will preach at the school house in Red Cloud Oct. the 21st at 11 o'clock. Last Sntunlay tins portion of the "footstool" received a soakfiifj rain; a thing unusual fr this time of the year, in this country. The fall Immigration is poirring in to the Valley at a lively rate, and the white topped wagons are seen on our Ptrcets every day. "I object," "state your objection," "3-our Pfr.uor we claim the right," etc. etc. is the way they have, besn going on at the school house- thn week. Our paper failed to arrive, and we are compelled to use such as we have on hand this week. Wc will also have to isue half sheets to some of our subscribers. See in another column notice of Teachers Institute, to be held at Red Cloud Nov. 1 2 and 3d. Arrange ments will be made for the ontcrtain uicntofthc teachers in attcdance. Wo have been asked several times why we don't publish a list of the awards made at the county fair ; it has been our intention-ro do-so as soon' as, we can get rid of the delinquent tax list; Wc have not room in this weeks issue to publish in full, the proceed ings of the State Convention held at Lincoln Oct. 10. Geo. IJ. Lake re ceived the nomination for member of rfte supreme Hench, and Holmes and Fcr.-ingcr were nominated fbr Regents ef the University Perhaps some ofour subscribers arc holding off to see if the Chief" isn't jroing to die, to such we would say that unless arunctSinr oarsidu the usual coureo of events happens, it is destined to live to a good old age, and we would mildly intimate that 3-011 might as well pay up now as any time. We neglected last week to notice an accident which happened at Mr. Foam's, by which a IJoheinean boy Inst his left arm. He was play ihg with another boy near the sorgh nm mill, when by some accident his band was caught by the cog-wheels of the mill, and the hand and lower part of the arm was bidly crushed. Am putation was suceeasfiyj performed by l)rs. Head & Sherer. A newspaper may puff and extol a man or set of men to theseventh heav en, and the men all the time imagine that is a part of the newspaper's bus iness ; but. the moment the editor ven tures to brush the fur the wrong way, be it ever o little, all the former good words po to naught and he ru-hos into the -anutum with firo itrlii.-? eyes and an order on hi lips that he wants that thing made right. An exchange vouches for the corrcctivcness of this remark. We learn that Wm. Arnold of Still water was so unfortunate as to loose about III acres of wheat by prairie fire recently. Mr. Ralph, it appears, was burning fire guards, and the escaped from him while the- wind was very high, and was carried directly to the wheat stacks of Mr. Arnold which were consumed. A little "onpleas-antne-s" between the parties resulted from- the- acci dent, but we are told" the affair is set tled, Mr. Ralph agreeing to pay $170 for the wheat that was destroyod. Tho Hon. Thomas Flarlan will de liver a lecture at the school hou.-e in lied Cloud on Friday evening tho ruth inst. The subject "Civilization never goes backward," is one that will pr.ivc of intero.-t to all. Mr. Harlan is very popular as a lecturer, and the press of the statu speak of his lectures in the most flattering style. The Lincoln fifooesays; "Mr. Harlan has become-vey popular as a lecturer, showing that he has the ability to amuse and interest. "" Everywhere he is received with rounds of applause, do not fail to. hear him Friday night. We arc again obliged to call upon our subscribers who are in arrears, toeotne forward and settle up. Our subscrip tion books show that nearly all (Hour subscribers are behind, ind some have not paid up for years, many- promised that they would pay after harvest, harvest i over and a few have paid whi'e the majority have not. We waited long for what is due us and and now we would be very much obliged and greatly benefited" if our friends would pay a part if not all ni.. .i..-.,. .wm WVvfTh not write this to "fill up," we mean it lor an bon.M j ioir, squaw dufor what is Justly Cue REPUBLICAN STATE TICKET.
