During the first eight mouths of the present fiscal year, commencing July 1, 1870, our exports exceeded our im ports by $153,000,000, indicating a balance in our favor at the rate of $!0,000,000-pcr annum, nearly twen ty millions per month. Should the war in Europe go on as expected, this balatioe will be increased in our fuvui. The attempt of the Wall street bulls to force gold up, on account of the war proMiects in Europe, will have a very short livid success. T..e inevitable result of the war over tho water will be to cause a flow of specie to this eoiiutry, lor American securities will take the preference in the English and German markets. The Council BJulfs No- pareil has this to say in regard to the grasshop per business iu Iowa : l'Northweterii Iowa farmers have Ukcu a new tack iu-thoir raw against the grasshoppers which have infested that portion of the State for the past two years. Instead of trying to destroy the pests by an aggressive warfare, they propjse to circumvent them by Ontablihing cheesy factories and creameries. Everyone who can is buy ing milch cows. Those who cant buy or waut more than thty can buy are arrauginjt t9 hire cows by the year, paying eight dollars per year and tak ing Irom three to five years leases, re taining all tho produce, including the calf. Pastures and meadows- being abundant and free, nearly the whole produce is clear gain. The pests do uot touch the wild grasses,, so that, eowe what will, a crop of dairy pro ducts is sure." We have heard some talk of a. cheese factory at lied Uloud. We have heard considerable about concussion as a means of destroying grasshoppers. A citizen of Florida, we believe, is the originator of the idea, but it appears that the festive "hops." are as invuloerabl&to oooctw ion as they are to heat or cold. They were not brought into this world to die a death of violence, and gunpow der will not "faze" them, if we believe the following from the Brownville Ad vertiser : "Ou last Wednesday some of the farmers of Nemaha precinct tried an experiment ou the concussion theory to kill grasshoppers- They procured sixty-eight pounds of powder, dug a hole from six to eight feet deep, on the farm of Mr. Nesbit put therein their powder, filled up the hole with dirt, beating it in as compact as possi Me, set fire to the fuse and then, bast Hy retreated to a f?afe distance. Iu dne course of time the powder "went off' throwing the uirt in every direc tion, tearing a jagged hole about 15 feet across the top. But concussion, wasn't forthcoming-, the explosion be ing a very weak affair so far as the sound was concerned ; not being Heard? as far as the report of a shot gun. Of course ir is considered by thoe engag ed in. it as a failure-"' The Janiata Herald accuse the ed itor of the Adamn county Gazette of dealing a tombstone from a Michigan graveyard and nMng it a- a job stone in his office And the Gazette man, to retaliate, wyr that Brown of the Herald, made an attempt to steal f-aid ptone from him. An old man, a veteran of the war of 1512 was recently killed by an engine on the railroad track at Toledo, Ohio. He was walking to town for the pur pose of consulting a lawyer in regaru to getting a pension. The Janiata Herald and the Adarts County Gazerte ."till continue to carry on a wordy war far-, and indulge In t'ie pleasant pastime of calling each other liars, thieve.-', vagabond, and other endearing epithets. It was hop ed and expected, that when the county seat fight in that e;u ty vus ended that the journals in que.-tion would dcytet from this personal :ibue as in our opinion it is not calca'ated to ele vate the standard of journalism. Give us a rest. The Great Powers, KusMa and Tur key, are marshaling their clans and preparing for the terrible conflict that is foon to en-u. All the powers of the old world stand and with bated breath await the onset. When or how the war will end, or how many nations will yet take a hand in the deadly struggle, can only be conjectured. There is no danger, however, that the United State- government will take an active part ; and the farmers of Ne-bra.-ka can congratulate themselves that they will receive better prices for their products in the future thau they hive for the last few years. Nebraska as it Is. From the Prairie Farmer.) During the last two years my travels and examinations of farming lands have extended from the Mi-sissippi river to the Itncky Mountains, and from Texas to Nebraska, and my im pression is that southern Nebraska is the best agricultural country iu the region mentioned, because it has not only tie three indi-pen.-ibles to the luxuriant growth of vegetation, viz: good soil, sufficient moi.stu.re and plen ty of sunshine ; but the surface is comparatively level, and like all the best farming countries, :t slopes south and cast. From a few miles south of the Platte river there is a perlect net work of almost innumerable small streams of pure, clear water which flow south and eat. forming the Weeping Water, Nebraska, Big Blue and the. Republican rivers, altogether affording more ri.-h valley laud than can be I'ouud in any country of the same area. These rapid tre mis funsh excel lent water powers for mills and facio ries. While many portion- of the Great West are dead, southern Ne braska is all life and activity itr a! Je partmenLs. Hundreds of new dwell iugs, school houses and churches are being built both iu the towns and country, and the builder's hatchet and the black.-mith's hammer are heard on all sides, and while traveling hundreds of utiles on the Burlington & Missouri Uivcr railroad during the last few days farmers plowing a d drilling, from early morn till dusky eve, were teen in every direction. All kind of graces grains, vegcta bles and fruits do well here, ai.d the soil and climate arc cspe ially adapted to the great staples, wheat and corn, which are produced in iurgequantities. ipSaeB3KJR tfdiamgg--jgLJaUJaj f ASKta fr4 dr)-"!-. The storm uuroofed the house of Mr. James Murphey, living on Buffalo Creek, and strewed things around in divers ways too numerous to mention. Fortunate ly, no ne was hurt The small grain looks well on this sid of the river. The spring rye is from four to six inches high, and the spring wheat from two to three inches. Barley and oats look well. There is plenty of grass on the prairie, and all stosk is doing well without hay or graim Some of the farmers have their corn ground ready to plaut, and several will commence this-week. Everybody is-going, to plant mostly corn. They don't seeu to fear the young hopper, though they have made their appearance in some spots. The early gardens are looking: fmer and the prospects for an abundance of vegetables is flattering. Mr. Daniel Norris has planted four acres of potatoes. Mr. and Mrs. Heaton were made to rejoice over the arrival of a fine boy, which weighed 12 pounds. Yours, G. W. H. April 18th, 1877. Met pursuant to adjournment. Full Board present.
