Between fifty and .-eventy-flve wag on loads of hogs patcd through town, ei.foute foi Hastings, withiu the last ten davs. We acknowledge the receipt of an otheronv of Geo. Francis Train's J 'a per. It i dressed in mourning for 1 the American Republic, and is rich, rare and racv. Yhe Guaid reports the young hop pcrs hatching out in swarms up there iu Franklin county. We have seen j 4bthing of the little "cusses" in this part of the valley, so far, and hope wo Wont, Mr. C. A. Van Horn of Michigan, called on us last, week and subscribed for the Chief. He informs us that bfias come to this coun ry to stay. Yrecouiuieud his judgment in the sc- lection of a locality for a future home. The pro?pecta for a large itnmigra tion to Nebraska this season are quite encouraging, as tie Union Pacific land department has received between two xiritf three hundred letters daily for some weeks paU enquiring about lauds. lUin yesterday. IUin last Saturday. To pentlemen from Janiata were in town yesterday. We learn that thu bouse of Ferry Ralston was burglarized last Saturday night and wmc clothing, money and other valuables carried off. Wotk has lecn commenced on the lot adjoining Mr. Bentley'a building, ontbesouth. A new building will soon be erected, wo understand. Ben. Van Dyke has been doing some fine work on several buildings on the south side of the river. He is a "hois' plahterer, and understands putting on the finishing touch, kalsomimng. It is rumored that Mr. Webb, a res ident of this town, and formerly mail carrier between here and Hastings, "lit eut" lat Monday night, taking with him his family arid hou-ehold effect-. The Farks Bro's. having the fear of God and a realization of our urgent necessities, before their eyes, proceed ed last week, to build us a pair of new boots. Yes, we acknowledge that we arc proud of those boots, go and (ret a pair of the same make. We met Mr. OJmtcad. of Inavah;, in town yesterday. Ho reports that heveral families from the west have ricently located near him. From the four quarters of the globe they flock to the Republican valley, in search of homes. We understand that a gentleman from Iowa is in town, who proposes to erect a machine shop at ihirf place if the citizens of the town will bold out HinVicnt inducements. We hope the people will take the matter under fa vorable consideration. For some time patt our exchanges have been dicu!ing the Blue Glass theory. We know nothing about its merits or dis-iucii's, coni-ciLentry have said nothing on the subject, believing that the medic il faculty were the only ones pariicul.ii ly interested in it. An exchange Migg'stively remarks : Never go into a stoie whero you are not wanted. If a mil; wants you to go to hi.? rooms he wll invito you to do s ; and if a merchant wants you to visit his place he will invite you through the local paper. It is wrong to intrude upon privacy, so don't do it. From our Oak Creek letter it will be -ecu that the people of that part of the county ate ahcidy discuing the quest inn of railroad bonds. It scemt to us a waste of breath to talk about railroad bonds when the counry has not been aked to vote bond-. Whcu the uropo.-ition of bonds or no bonds is submitted to the county, then it seems to us will be the time to dL euss the matter. Oh ! for some quiet secluded spot, far from civi ization, a cave in the heart of a dense forest, an old desert ed saw mill, far from the haunts of man, surrouuded by eternal bills, whose suuimets reach the clouds, where "Doc." Daiton could retire with hi& violin, aud wit! t eochan'ed bow draw emotion fioui its magic string, without rendering desperate the peace ful dwellers iu this happy village. We would call the attention of the traveling public to the "Boy's Hom,' a firttclass hotel, kept by Geo. Zeiss. This hotel offers the best of accommo dations. Commercial men find it to tb-ir interests to put up at the 'Boys' Home.' Good sample room in con nection with tho hotel. Call and see us when you stop in town. 36-tr Some people will steal for pure cus sed ness. Steal things that are of no earthly use to them, just for the pleasure of stealing. Some person stole a belt off of the corn-sheller ut the mill the other day, aud were fi 1 lowed by Mr. F. an i made to return it. The law should take its coarse in these matters, and might be the means of teaching thoae petty thieves a les son. Last fall we stated that we would wait until spring on those of our sub scribers wh were in arreais, and give them a chance to settle their little ac counts with this office, withnnt incon venience to themselves. Some have paid up, others have notified as of their intention to pay soon; for which iavors we leei iruiy greatiuu iuerc are some who have not settled nor ex pressed any desire to do so. To such we only nave to say, that we cannot longer furnish them a paper unless they pay us for it. We shall therefore be compelled to drop a few names from our lists next week, unless this last call meets with a response. There is in this town a few individ uals who are engaged in different branches of business, and who do not advertise in their county paper, and offer as an excuse that they most econ omize. This we think is false econo my. We send each week, hundreds of conies of the CiHEP out of the county, and perhaps a majority of them to eastern states. These papers are eagerly sought after by persona who contemplate emmigrating. They have no way of judging of the impor tance of any county exceot by consult ing the advertising columns of the county paper, hence the importance of advertising your business. The ad- I vantages of such a course most be ob 1 vjous to every intelligent-man. The rroest bower of rata will do th: ground food, and Hart vegetal ic. Come to imj lecture to-morrow eve ning, at the School Hotte. m Ut Scbenck of Eliu Creek, called yeetrrday. Notice b card in another column. Immigration in coming in at a lively rate. We hear from all pirttofthe county, favorable reports of tne influx of immigration, Not a day paws that we do not see number of white top ped wagons wending their way west ward. A iKmion of the are adven turer bound for the fold fields of the great west, but a majority are in aearch of homes in the Republican valley. It ia, perhaps, generally known that Joe Warner bai returned from Kan tax where he went in pursuit of Mort hou and his team, having been suc cessful :o necnring hit team. We give below an account of the flight of Morehoos and the pursuit of Mr. Warner and Mr. Lowe, a gathered from them since their return: Oti Thursday following the depar ture of Morehous, Warner and Lowe, procured a team and started in pur suit. They drove to Cawker Cityt WJ miles south of Red Cloud, and there learned that the runaways had stop ped for a short time, but drove on to Pittsburg, fifteen miles farther, where they stopped for the night. Starting early in the morning, they i cached Willson, a station on the K. P. rail roid, the following evening. Here Morehous bargained the team for 1125; intending, no doubt, to take the western bound train for Denver that night. The purchaser, however, re fuf-ed to pay the money that night. Consequently Morehous could uot take the train that night, so he, in the morning refused to let tho team go, and pulled out for Great Bend, a sta tion on the Santa Fe railroad. It appeared to be the policy of the runaways, as was learned by those in pursuit, to make particular inquiries about the road to certain towns ahead, and then after starting to turn off and go to a different town from that which they had inquired for, thus hoping to evade pursuit. The fugitives did not go to Great Bend as was supposed when they left Willson, but went to Klliuwood, a small station on the same road but farther cast. Here More hous sold the team and buggy to a verdant youth from the east, who was not "up to snuff," in this western couuti, for $185 aud a revolver; the young man aKo paying their hotel bill at Ellinwood, one day. After selling the team they then bought tickets for I'opcka, the capital of Kansas. They left Ellinwood on Friday night on the midnignt train. Nothing further has been heard from them. Mr. Warner and Mr. Lowe found the team ou the Saturday night fol lowing, about ten miles from the place of sale. It had been taken to a farm house in the country tbr safe keeping, it is supposed. Mr. Warner had but little difficulty in gaining possession of his team, and returned home Thurs day, being absent just seven days and a half, aud out of pocket about $00 in cash. It is needless 'or us to make any comments on this sad affair. The de serted wife is uocunwlable over the loss of her little three-uur-old girl. We are glad to at ate however, that an effort is being made to aflfcet the caiiture of the guilty parties and the return of the little giri to her mother.
