It U Mated that Geo Keifer, arre-'-ed

family, resided for many years in
Washington county, Wisconsin, and
was a member of the legislature of
that state in 18G0, and moved to Ar

"There fhould, in justice to partie
interested, be a law compelling Noti
ces of content to be publixhed in the
I'oiitity paper in which the land is sit
u ited. About a ycir ago the officers
of the Bloomington Land-office adopt
ed tbat practice, giving the claimants
in each contest case the beneGt of a
notice in their own county paper; but
lately, so far at least as this county i
concerned, dd such publication has
b n made. To publish a notice in
the Franklin county paper as wc un
der.tj nd is now douc is a mere uiat
tr of form, as persons living in other
counties .wnuid be yerv unlikely to ever
see 3t. The same would be true,
m asm ably, of any other county paper
in the district. If the object is to give
notice to the adverse party, it should
be pnb'i-hed where lie would be mot

Wc think as you do, Bro. Evans,
but then we should not eom plain, the
Tloom'ng'on Guard must live, you
know, and the land office men prol a
bly feel that it is their duty to help
support their hrmo paper, even if
lYvy must do it by robbing other pa
pers in the district of printing that
evidently justly belongs to them. And
then if tl e Gu rd caters to the wish s
of the land office dignitaries, and do- s
their bidding, it is nothing more than
right that it .should receive their pat
ronage. The following extract taken from
the correspondence of the Chicago
Timet gives an impartial statement of
the prooperity of Nebraska, and her
prnba le future :
'"That the blighting finger of finan
cial embarrassment has touched the
State of Nebraska but lightly, in evi
dence on every hand, of the prosperi y
of her merchants anl farmers, and
especially is it the case with the la tie-,
many of whom came to the country a
few years ag ., in almost destitute cir-cum-tances,
and who. to-day, are in
dependent and fore-handed. The fu
ture of Nebraska is brilliant with
promises, in fact, probably no State in
the Union promises more. She lies
at tl.e foot of the mountains, the most
western of the agricultural states; on
the eat are all the great trunk lines or
railroad, prepared to carry her pro
duee to thi seaboard cities on the
west, immediately at her doors, are
the great mining districts, soon to be
occupied by a large population, that
must draw their supply from ber gru
uar'es. Never in the history of the State,
has it offerel such inducements to
those seeking a home, as is offered to
day. iHiiw, in Nebraska, lands are
cheap, inviting every man to accept a
home, independent of the likes, dis
hkes or cap! ices of others. Soon these
will have passed away. A rapidly in
creasing population is occupying her
rich valleys and broad table lands.
-But a few ye-.rs will elape before
cheap lands will only be a record of
history. With a few hundreJ dollars,
the farmer boy or the bleached out
city clerk can c-Jiiie to this country,
sud in a few years can riew as farad
the aye can rtaah, acres of land rich iu
grielturl resources, of which he is
the sole proprietor the fruits of his
own industry.
We are glad to be able te say that
the people of this part of the State,
are not at all ecan-d about grasshop
pers. There U, in our opinion, very
little danger to apprehend lrooi the
young hoppers. During a residence
of leu years in the State, we have
never known the young hoppers to do
any damage of any consequence wheat .
they hatched out. In our opinion
there never has been in the history of
the State, a better prospect for crops
than there is the present season. We
are pleased to notice that the fartne s
ia this locality are plowing and sowing
and preparing to plant, just as though
there was not a g. hopper on the face
of the globe.
The Smith county Pioneer fails to
come to us any more: what is the mat
ter? Will Jcnkens, did you become en
raged and drop ua from your exchange
list ? The Pioneer is not the largest
paper in the world, tut we miss it
from among our exchanges.
Cheyenne is extensively advertising
her route to the Black Hill through
out the East as "the only route that
i guarded by military," yet nearly all
the routes arc equally a well guarded
and quite as safe. The Sidney route
is in many respects preferable, while
for freighters, none of the routes offer
greater advantages than those from
Grand Island and Kearney. If we
had a stage line ours would be the
route. G I. Independent.
The following we clip from the Jew
ell county (Kan ) Monitor. The "Dr.'
in question was seen in Red Cloud
some two or three weeks ago, but
passed on north, we believe.
"On or about the 20th of last month
an individual appeared in our town
representing himself as Dr. W. II. B.
Mary field, a graduate of an Eclectk'
Medical Institute, in Ohio, and a
practicing physician Daring his stay
here he held his office in the No. I
Drug Store an I had several calls on
Limc.-tene, and on the Friday follow
ing his arrival here, he procured a
horse and saddle from Dr. Stud ley,
and arming himself wilh a pair of sad
dle bags full of pills and physic from
the No. 1, he proceeded to visit his
patients on Limestone. From there
he wtnt northwest. Somewhere in
the vici..ity of Salem, he traded off
Dr. Studley's horse for another one,
receiv.ng fiv, dollars as boot-money.
Fiom there he proceeded north, and
the la t heard of him he was iu Red
Cl.rod, Neb.
We have since learned that this
Boyd, atuu Marytield, is a very bad
character, and in August, 1874,,, Has
scnteucvid to the State Penitentiary
for a term of five years, by Judge Bolt
from Mitchell county, for horse steal
ing, but on account of ill health was
I ardoned out a month or six weeks
aoby Gov. Anthony. Dr. Stud ley
has a letter in his possession, from
Keokuk county, Iowa, stating that
there i-j a reward of $500 offered for
him by that county, for . ome deed or
ciime that he has committed there.
He is a man about six feet high,
auburn hair, gray eyes, rather spare
features, and whej he left here he
wore a long gray overcoat. Ho is evi
dently a bad, bad man, and any per
son coming in contact with him should
look out."
Who has not heard of the Bender
family, of murderous fame in Kansas.
The following in regard to the capture
if certain parties supposed to be the
Bender family, wj clip from the Lin
coln Journal.
Muskogee, I. T. April G.
Deteciivo Thomas Beers, of Empo
ria, Kansas, arrived here at 3 o'clock
this afternoon, having in charge Geo.
Keifer, alias John Bender. Mrs. Kei
fer, alias Mrs. Bender. Philip and Tal
lie Keifer, alias John and Kate Ben
der. They were arrested near Buston
Mountain, Crawford couuty, Arkansas
on a requisition issued by Gov. An
thony, of Kansas, on the Governor of
Arkansas, on April 3d, on a deserted
farm on the Bayou road from Van
Buren to Fayetteville. Miss Kate re
sisted the arrest, shrewdly stating to
the officers that she was not the one
wanted. She said that she would show
him a photograph of Kate, and going
to a trunk, closely followed by the de
tective, and reached for a neat looking
nickle-plated revolver, but the detect
ive - as too quick for her. She then
went for a fire shovel, but she was
speedily disarmed. They bad besn
three days on the road through the
Indian Territory, and reached this
p not on their way to Kausas, but two
hours in advance of Deputy Marshal
Wilkinson, with a writ of Lab as cor
pus, issued by Judge Parker, ofti.e
United States District Court, com
manding them to bring their bodies
forthwith to Fort Smith, Arkan-as
There is great excitement over the
matter, aud Detective Bjers looks at
rasa ruse to obtain time for their
friends to effect a rescue. They will
start back for Fort timith to morrow.
Gov. Anthony has guaranteed the
2,000 reward offered by the State of
Kausas if they prove to be the genu
i", original Benders. George Kiefer
claims to have been a member of the
legislature of Wisconsin, in I860, from
We.-t Bend, Washington county, -in
that State, and to have resided there
until 1S73. Where are the Benders,
is still an open question.

The value of a reliable and ably con

and yt i. perhi- wver thvmagb'y
appreciated. We become so fatuili-ir
with it, that we look upou it a some
thing to be expected a a matter of
course, but it is only when we find
ourelve deprived of this medium of
communication that we realize its
value. It is not only the information
contained in a piperthatconstitoteits
only value. It discusses faithfully and
fearlessly the living isane of the day,
and is a powerful means of education.
F.r this reason it demands a high de
gr e of tale'it, aid requires a vast a
mouut of labor and research. It goes
abroad, is read and copied from to an
extent realized by few. and the city or
town is judged by this standard.
The sociil status of ,the community
is shown by its character, the business
and enterprise by its advertising col
umns. As a general thing a newspaper is
good or bad according to tho amount
of support it receives from the peoplt.
In order, then, that the community
may have a good paper, they must
give it a hearty and liberal support
and thus stimulate its publisher to re
newed exertion, and cheerful aud un
remitting labor. Ex.
This is tho alternate week in which
"war is inevitable," according to our
cable dispatches. The weekly change
from profound peace to assured war,
has only been going on now for about
two years, but already it gets monoto

like ours. But to the moss-backed
diplomatists of the old country a two
years game of see-siw, is in the high
est degree exhilerating, and they can
keep it up without stagnation of blood
for two years more, and never tire.

Louisa Creek, April Oth, 1877.
Ed. Chief. Eveiybody is done
seeding on the Creek, and now they
are busily engaged in planting forest
trees. The boys all turned out last
Friday and planted a fine grove on the
school house ground. It helps the
appearance of Dist. No. 9, by setting
out so many shade trees.
Mr. O. Wick wire and wife are hap
py over the arrival of a fine girl, which
weighed about 9 pounds.
Mr. Shoat .ays that be caught in
one steel trap, while trapping on State
Creek last winter, 4 coons, 2 wild cat,
4 skunks and 2 pack-a-way rats, and
several rabbits, all in one den, on the
bank of the creek. G. W. H.
Oak Creek, Webster Co.: Neb.
April 2J, 1877.
Ed. Chief. Although several
weeks have passed siuce the readers of
the Chief have heard from Oak
Creek, yet we have moved on iu our
usual way, swallowing nothing larger
than an elephant nor killing nothing
smaller than a Ilea. All the excite
ment we have had to break the mono
tony of the times was a test of the
herd law, making both parties the
poorer, and showing to the public the
frailty of human natuic.
The only n;hool taught in the pre
cinct last wiuter was in district No. GO,
by Mrs. Alice Hawley. The diotrict
was organized on Dec 20th, and our
wide awake director, A. A. Pope, im
mediately took measures to secure a
room aud get a shoo started, aud our
first three months school closed March
30th, to the satisfaction of all.
Frank Choat has invented a way
wherewith Nebruskians can build
cheap fence. He has built a hog pas
ture with the mother earth thai excels
those of the eastern states, built of
stone. For the benefit of those that
contemplate building fence I will try
and give his method of building it.

the hogs noses. You are no money
out, only the mouey extended in
buiiding.
The farmer? are busy putting in
their grain, trusting to kind provi
dence for protection from the hoppers.
A few have not the "wherewith" to
buy seed wheat, but inteed to plant
corn, aud 1 dou't think any ground
will lay idle the coming summer.
The railroad fever has a.4 iin com
menced to rage, and the question
bonds or no bonis seems to be the
chiet topic of conversation. The U
P. branch, or Omaha and Republican
valley seems to i a the road that will
carry bouds in this precinct, provided
it enters the eastern iioe anl build? at
least 24 miles of road in ihts couuiy.
If that si ould be the cae it will pay
more taxes every year than the mier
et on the bonds will amount to, be

the couoty capiiau.-'vt that would n t

hoping that the lever will Abate in a
