One of Senator Hitchcock's fast acts
hi the Senate was- (o jct the appropri
ation for heeds for the grasshopper
mictions of the country increased from
$10,000 to $25,000. This act of the
retiring Senitor will be appreciated by
the citizens of Nebraska.
Jut now the extension of the Oma
ha and Republican Valley railroad i
the great bone of contention between
rival western counties, and delegations
from those sections are daily arriving
here to consult with General Superin
tendent Clark, of the Union PaciGo.
Tuesday, Hamilton delegation were
here, aud to-day there were about for
ty men here from I 'oik for the same
purpose. Lincoln Journal.
To the caMin observer there is noth
ing, perhaps, in the above to create
any interest, or arouse any suspicion.
To us it is of import, and suggests
very forcibly the necessity of immedi
ate and concerted action on the part
ef the pcop'e of Webster county, if we
expect to secure the Omaha and lie
publican Vallej' railroad. Other coun
ties aie uing their best cfFor s to-secure
the road, and if Webster county
has any desires in this direction, we
should let it be known. If attar coua
ties can send delegations to confer with
the superintendent of suid road, why
cannot we? Let u- move in ;uia ma:
ter at once.
Railroad War and Prosper"? ofNew Boais.
The Union Pacific and the Hurling
ton and Missouri are now prrparirg
for war in earnest anil the people of"
Nebraska have reason to rpice. Jay
Gould has obtained possession of the
C. & N. W. a d the C. R. I. and l
line?, and will doubtless push new
lines of road into Nebraska to compete
with the R. & M. It is confidently
reported that a branch will be built
fi mil Sidney to the Black Hills and
the line from Omaha completed to
Lincoln and from there down thiough
Gage county to Beatrice and theu ex
tended out on the ReDB&fican valley
to Denver. This will suit the people
oi Gage and Jefferson ooonties. The
South Platte country is not owned by
the B. & M. and the people are in fa
vor of a competing line. We are in
formed that Mr. S. H. Clark, Presi
dent of the Omaha and Republican,
v illoy R. R. has written a Tetter in
which he asserts that the road will be
built into the Republican valley with
out delay if theie is a proper co-operation
on the part of the people. Let
the war go on, the people will co
operate. Beatrice Ecprexs.
Editorial Care?.
A Texas editor gives some figures of
a statistical memorandum of his every
day life, and we reproduce them- for
the benefit of that class of people who
think that the pathway of an editor,
especially a local editor, is covered
with roses, and that they have noth
ing to disturb their slumbers, no care
to bieak the silent flow of their life's
gentle river. Here they are :

On the bottom lands along the I ank s
of the Rapublican river the whole soil
to the depth of twenty feet is an allu
vial deposit from flowing waters, rich
in the vegetable matter and limestone
marl which enter iufo tho composition
and growth of both corn and wheat.
Thus the success of the staple pro
duets of the western farm ensured to
the-tillsr forever without tte costly
niaaures to which the thriving eastern

pelled to resort ; and as these impor
tant elements of the plowmaa's gJebe
are produced by existing causes from,
which additional supplies are at haad
in the rank vegetation of onaistA
nature aud the ceaseless drip of the
limestone ledges, it k appa;eut that
no uses of agriculture can exhaust the
soil. The land is first plowed in May

THE ANNUAL MEETING
whin a-sembled should pursue the f

circumstances render some other more
convenient :
1. The director's report shonld be
read foJ the infjrmation of the meet
ing. It should embody :
(1 ) A summary of all La iuess
transacted by the district or the board
duriug the past year.
(2.1 The aumber of mills of tax lev

pay bonds, or tol other purposes cou-
l nected with the schools.
(3.) Any other items which will be
uf use to tho district in arranging bu
iue-s for the next year.
2. The treasurer's report should be
read : it hould contain :
(1 ) An itemised statement of all
moneys received by him during the
year, and for what paid.
(3.) A statement showing money on
hand.
(4.) The total amount of district indebtedness,-
and when each part of it

After t hi report is read the treasur

money paid, and settle with the Board
The full details of this settlement
should be uoted ou the directors' rec

The meeting should next determine
the number of months school shall be
kept in the ensuiug year. (See sec. 33
of school iaw )
The director should then present his
estimate of the expenses ueccsary to
be incurred the cusuing year, includ
ing :
1 . For teachers' wages.
2. Fuel and contingencies.
. Repairs on school house.
4. Additions to furniture.
5. Payment of officers' salaries.
G. Any other Ivwful purpose.
7. Estimate of number of mills ou
the dollar necessary to be levied to

June. (See sec. 55 of school
law. )'
This report must be made by the

to the county superintendent within
ten days after the annual meeting. If
the county superintendent has not fu:
nitfhed the director with a blank for
this report,- one can- be had by writing
for it to the county superintendent.
Directors will observe that the an
