All are willing to admit that a railroad
to this point would be the' making" of
the town and county, but there ap

of our citizens, to lie still and let
things take. their coarse. This will not
do in railroad matters. An effort must
be made, and soon, too, or it may be
too lube.

Ed. Chief. I suppose you will
not object to a few luu from this
place. Fir-t, ( in case you do- not know
h I will tell you that this is the name
of the P. O. in the north-west pan ol
this county ; U was named in houorof
the Beachum family, who Were the
first settlers here, and presided over
by Mrs. Ilerrick, daughter of Jame.
Beacham. There is a good sell joI
house here, all paid for too. There is
a good county bridge across I i erty
Creek at this place. Going up the
cieek toward Webster county we first
come to the farm of James Beachum,
which shows signs ofthiift aud hard
work. He is a full blooJed 'Granger'
came here a poor man six or seven
years since, but lrs worked himsjll
into good circumstances, judging from
the amount of stock around him, and
has the patent for his land now. We
next come to his brother William who
ha- everything lie needs but a wife.
Farther up wc find Mr Maloncy with
a great uutntar of hogs and cattle ; he
has a crib of about lUO bu-hels of
corn besides a granary full of wheat
aud oats, and if j'ou speik ofgra-s-hoppurc
to him he will give you a kick
which tells plainer than words can,
that he has uo fear of them. Follow
ing up the course of the creek we find
Mr. Schumm who is a jolly whole
souled dutch man. He says he "likes
Nebraska, but the winters are getting
already too cold. The Catholic church
is situated on the comer of his land
Next to the line between this aud
Webster Co., we find Wm. Ross, who
is school director in this district, and
dispenses justice throughout this part
of the countj', and settles difficulties
for all who cannot settle them for
themselves. There is a paper in cir
culation here to obtain signers and
subscribers for a weekly paper to be
published iu Nelson. Ho one has sign

I don't sec as any one can find fault
with our new country, of course times
are very hard, as they are in any new
place, but they cannot beat it for good
soil and pleasant weather and good
neighbors. Red Cloud, ou- county
seat is our nearest town, but Hastings
is our main market, as it has Railroad .
There seems to be a good prospect for
a Railroad through from Hastings to
Red Cloud, which will run down E!m
Creek: if so the price of land will raise
and when we raise our grain we will
have a close maikerv and our country
will grow more rich. We can grow
wbeatr oats rye and barley, and' fatten
our hogs and drive them to market and
g,it a good price for them; and we can
raise our young stock and have the
pleasure of seeing it grow into uioney.
A nicer stock range wa never found
anywhere; it would do an old eastern
man's eyes good to Fee the be-iutiful
rolling prairie. Though we h ave not
a plenty of wood, we will be able to
buy coal when the Rail road run
throueh hen. And as for rails, we
do not need them while we have a
