n.ilrcad in rhc Republican vallej
It i. evident to us that tin-. II & M.
company do tit intend to build a road
' tap this valley, at lca-t, not until
i In-y become itisficd that mjuio other
company intend to run a road in here.
It is generally believed that their in
tentions ate to hurvey a Hue from
Hastings to some point iu this valley,
and thus create an excitement, and
thereby facilitate the sale of their land
in thh and Fianklin oo.inties.
The Omaha and Republican valley
railroad, which is being built by the
Vi P. Coaipany is pointing this way.
They have surveyed their line as far
as Sutton in Clay county. Where
they will strike the Republican, is not
at present I nown, bu .t may re. -Kiiiubly
be presumed that this wi!l be
the point, and that the road will he
completed here inside of a twelve
month from this date, provided the
counties along the line will extend a
reasonable inducement. We believe
hat Webster county is ready to vote
Loads to the full extent of the law to
aid in the construction of a road that
will give them a direct outlet to Chica
go and the east.
' TnE stiff-necked Democratic orcan
v .. . r i ...... . , r
sr at tvasuington, tne union, comes
down a peg or two in its Presidential
notions. It now holds that the revo
lution will be quiet' and peaceful, that
the policy of the Democrats will so
embarrass the incumbent of the Presi
dential chair as to make it a seat of
thorns. This is, at least, a concession
that Hayes Till be inaugurated with
out opposition.
The general impression seems to be
that if Turkey rejects the propositions
submitted by the conference at Con
stflntinople she will stand alone, and
the tone of English papers warrants
the conclusion that ttiey believe that
for this obstinacy s' c will richly de-
s Tve harsh treatment at the hands of
Russia. The Sultan is scolded for hi.
stubbornness and any show of resent
ment on the pari of his people at the
indolent or dictatorial attitude of other
nations is classed as a serious Weniish
iu the Sultan's character.
The prospects at the present time,
for a war in Europe are not so flatter
ing s they have been. It ie affermed
that the Porte has declared its willing
ness to make concessions and offer se
curities to thr poweis, bvt it unwaver
ingly refuses to'tanction the occupation
of its provinces by any troops whatev
er. Husaii is abandoning the propo
.sal for the ocupation of Turkish terri
tory, and offers accept administration
guarantees in the appointment of a
ii'jmber of Russian officials in the local
administration of Bulgaria. '
DOWN TO DEATH.
Another terrible aoeident this time
with those triple accompaniments of
horror, freezing, burning, and drown
ing. Ou the 30:h of Dec, at 7.30 a.
iu , an iron bridge over the Ashtabula
River on the Lake Shore railroad gave
way under the Pacific Express, a train
which consisted ot-eleven cars, drawn
by two engines. The forward engine
had just cleared the bridge when it
fell, and, by the breaking of a coupling-pin,
was left on the track. The
rust of the train fell a distance of sev
euty-five feet into tLe water below.
Six of the eleven can were passenger
coaches. There weie on board oer
three hundred persons. Of the-e it is
believed 250 were killed.
The crh of the filing bridge and
train was heard at a difttuace of a mile
from the bcene, and was immediately
followed by a brilliant illumiuation uf
t-Iie sky, caused by the burning cars,
which took fite almost instantly.
The most heartrending incidents arc
Mid. Several persons firmly wxdged
between heavy timbers, yet not mor
tally hurt, were burned to death before
the eyes of helpless bystanders. A
man, a vomd; and a child are now
known to have died in ihU way. The
man was roasted for full half an .hoar,
uttering the mott. pitiful ones Tor aid
meanwhile before death came.
Two babes were ttkeu pot of the
wrvrk vlivc and not fatally injured.
There L uaoue to claim them.
The Mayor and citizens of Ashta
bula arc doing all that can be done to
alleviate suffering
The very latett gives nxty a the
number of woundr-d, and 100 killed.
Communicated.
IlA.-rriNo.s, Dec. 30. h, 1870.
Mr Editor. A happy new year
to the old Chief, to the new Chief,
and the whole corp of help and pit
ron, and though we may not be in
your county, jet we claim a near re
lation, and 'are hol-ing ourf-elv a in
readiness to rejoice with you whenev r
the iron steed fchall commence to
prance up and d wn your fertile valley,
giving new life to the courage and en
terprise that is waiting his help. We
find Ha-tiug.s a lively enterprising
point and a good plac-i for the railroad
to start from and hope we shall .tee it
completed before another new year's
greeting. The present outlook for the
firmer is very cheering ; wheat i.t cell

all kinds a7e f elli rig' ll'wap. Any
one who can beat the Farmer's Store,
just opened, he tnu.it he an expert at
hair-splitting and hort division. A.-
for ourselves we Irave got our "Hash

pared to feed the hungry and sleep
the sleepy, and would like to sec all
our friends and our friend's friend--,
and everybody who ever had any
friends. So next time come and .see
us at Hoarding Hall, 1l St., Hastings.

Dec. 25th, 1S7G
Ed. Chief. In your last issud I
noticed a communication from Guide
Rock, signed "Homesteader." He
concludes his communication by rid
ding himself of some of his political
zeal, an undue amount of wnich he
possessed at the time of writing. He
commences his political harrangue, by
saying, that upon the 7th of Novem
ber, we exhibited the "party spirit"
of '62, but before ho concludes he
comes to the conclusion-that we lacked
some ef the'spirit, becaus-j "a few dis
satisfied, disappointed members of a
political party" failed to tup port the
nomiuee of the county convention, but
instead "advocated the claims of an
independent candidate." In the fir. t
place, Homesteader is over jealous,
because he takea a step ia advance of
any other member cf bis party, and
advocates minority rale. He knows
very well that his "regular nominee"
although he received the nomination
in the county convention, was not the
choice of the people, neither was he
at the time.
They made this manifestly regular
ly nominating another candidate, and
btill more manifest upon the 7tb ol
November.
If Homesteader interprets the cu
tomsofeur forefathers rightly, I lose
much of the respect which I think is
due to them. If his true meaning can
be arrived at, he denounce- a majority
of the voters in this county, as 'a few
dissatisfied, disappointed members of
a political party." And yet diese d. -appointed
members supported Home
steader unanimously upon the 7th,
aud this unanimity of sentiment as re
gards-uiniself, is. what tlec.ed him to
his present? position by a oleir repub. -
cau majority- We ak no returns for
supporting hlmv He goes on and de
nounces a dissatisfied and disappoio J
ed. xHe is right, iu one thing. We
are disappointed to think that Home
steader is so over jealous that he ad
vocatcs minority rule, but wc are not
dissatisfied. Wc are satisfied, with
the result of the election upon the 7th,
for it shows that a majority will rale
although confronted by an uncompro
mi.'iiig minority. l'trriL.
