'1 he Jh.ieau of AgiicuUure at Washington, e-ibli-hed for the ad vancement of ouriiivat agricultural in teiests, is nearly silent in regard to locust or grasshopper devastations, the attention of the Department not hav ing been diiectcd to the investigation of the subject. Is there not a great fault that this Department has not given this question more attention V .Surely it could not m any manner aid or advance the interests of agriculture better than by a thorough investigation of a subject closely allied with the vital prosperity of the country. The fullest Miformation on the subject is embodied in the report of .he Regents of the Smithsonian Institution of iks. In order to bring the subject readily before you. 1 deem it proper to review briefly the destruction which has been made by the locusts in vaiious countries, and at difiVient periods of the past, together -with some of the imaiis which have been employed for defense against their inroads. Perhaps the earliest recorded appear ance of the giasshoppers upon the North American continent, was upon the lands of the Jesuit missionaries, in California, in the year 1122. They re appeared there in 17-Jti. and in nrJand IT.",-, and again for three years succes sively, beginning with 1705. Captain Jonathan Carver, wiio explored the vast region of the extieme Northwest in 17)t;. de.sciibcs their appeal ance at that eaily day, adding that -they infest these parts : nd ti interior colonies in lare swarms, and do a gieat deal of mis chief." The first record we find of the ap pearance of the locust in the North west during the present cent my is con tained in Xeill's Ihtory of Minnesota. It occurred in the Red River settlement in the year IMS and I8if, and was an invasion in great lorce, causing much sufl'eiiiig in a young colony already struggling with the. numberless hard ships incident to early pioneer life. The account states that the gras.shoppeis came from the west one afternoon in the last week of July, i,sist :ite even thing green ami deposited their eggs The colonists were obliged t) semi to Prairie du Chien to obtain seed for their next crop. Prom 1820 to 1R", there seems to have been ::o marked locust invasion in the Mississippi Val ley, excepting the ravages in Texas in lStr, and again in is;. This Ion-interval of ,ui,.t may perhaps be ex plained by the tact that within the in teival severe visitations were felt in California in ls-s, :U1(1 j. .lm, ,)V the iwssible fact that the locusts ma"y have crossed the Ib.cky Mountains, anil made advances westward during those years. Put it is plain, from the words of Carver, already quoted, that the ap pearance oi ttie locusts in the North west was a thing of repeated occur rence before the time when he visited the country 1774, and it is more than probable that even portions of Min nesota were visited between 1S10 and isr.0. The invasion of Minnesota in 1S.16-7 was confined mostly to a narrow belt upon the Upper Mississij pi Valley. and though limit d in area was exceedingly severe. Tl"v reappeared in 18.14 and 1S65, cliieilv in the northwestern portion of the State, doing but little damage except in a few localities. Their next appearance -was in lsV.S. when they made a slight incursion. They ap peared m limited numbers, doing little tt ! now t o "l i.j l. - -r tru.-14 1 !rr.t t . - "w eiWK"s srHtvn ri KKI.f TRt sh i. i .. ,. Irt.lrtt tnvn Th. K.eUiry 1 t I . . In I) wight's travels through New Kngland and New York in the years 17'.7 and 17!S, there is an account of' the locusts in Vermont, Massachusetts and New Hampshire, and the insects in those States were, if possible, even more destructive. They devoured clover, maize, tobacco plants, burdock, all veg terminated by the Government'. In a lew years they perceived their error, for the locusts again commenced ttieir lavages, t'poii this the Government proeuicd a new supply of grakles and the b.ids cleared the islands of locusts. There is a species of birds found in humeine numb-is in Russia, Roland and Rower Kgypt, and on the shores of the Mediterranean, called the rose colored blackbird, that feeds on locusts and their eggs and larva'.
