The Vanllaydens and the Vander
j,ols weie rival families in Stephen
town. Kaeh family claimed a superi
orit over the otlier, which claim was
pi.shM and phoo'd at in all ways imag
inable, :us being perfectly preposterous,
ami really one of the most absurd
things ever heard of. There were three
young ladies in each family, and it was
the height of Mrs. Vandcrpuol's ambi
tion to get her daughters married off
before the Vanllaydeii girls were. Mrs.
Vanllaydeii, like a true Christian, re
fused to submit to her rival's designs,
and lesolved to. secure husbands for her
daughters as soon as such a consumma
tion could be brought about. For the
last two ears both mamevering mam
nias had worked to effect a marriage in
their n-speetive families, but as yet un
successfully. "I'll tell you what it is, Letty," said
Mrs. Vanllajtlen. one day, to her eldest
daughter, "we've got to get up some
party to offset the Vanderpools' straw
berry sociable. That was really the
stupidest affair of the seaswu. If 1
couldn't do belter than that, 1 wouldn't
make any attempt, I declare. I could
sec what it was got up for. Mrs. Van
derpool wants to catch young Shelby
for her Maria; and she couldn't get him
into the house in any other way. I
could see that he was horribly bored."
-I'll tell you what," spoke up Susie,
Mrs. Vanllayden's youngest-, "let's have
a croquet party. Wouldn't that be
splendid V We could have tea in the
summer-house, you know, and I'm sure
it would take, because there's never
been anything like it here."
"It's a very good idea," coincided
I .city. And Mrs. Vanllaydeii thought
so, too. Accordingly it was settled that
next week, Tuesday, they would have
a croquet party, and invitations were
issued at once.
"Of course the Vanderpool tribe will
le on hand," remarked Mrs. Vanllay
deii. "They always come to criticize,

quite keenly, much to the delight of the
lady playing, and her daughters, who
tittered behind their handkerchiefs, as
Mrs. Vanllaydeii limped off to the cor
ner, where Letty was holding Mr.
Shelby, spell-bound, by her recitals of
some thrilling event.
Mrs. Vanllaydeii watched her op
portunity, and removed a hair-pin from
Mrs. VanderjK)ol's hair without being
caught at it. The result of which was,
that during an exciting turn of play,
Mrs. Vanderpools chignon tumbled off,
and Mrs. Vanllaydeii screamed out to
her opponent that her back hair was
coming down just as it came off, making
her look like a hen in moulting-time,.is
.Miss Letty remarked to Mr. Shelby;
whereupon that gentleman sent off
into another paroxysm of delight, while
the Vanderpool trio looked black with
rage, and the maternal member of the
party picked up her chignon, and pro
ceeded to readjust it. At which Mrs
Vanllaydeii very magnanimously re
moved several hair-pins from her own
hair, letting it come down all about her
shoulders, so that everybody could see
it was her own, and tendered the pins
to her chagrined opponent, who ac
cepted them with very ill-grace.
Pretty soon Miss Letty accused Miss
Maria of cheating, and thereupon fol
lowed an angry and heated discussion,
in which some remarks, not strictly
elegant, but highly forcible, were made
by both parties. It was during this
little squabble that Mrs. Vanderpool,
who was determined to win the game,
made a famous run, and knocked Mrs.
. . . r l : e.At !... 1.I...1-
Vanllaydeii and Letty out, helped all
her side to become roveis, and so dis
played her skill and generalship, that
in live minutes more she hit the iost
with her ball, and looked around upon
the vanished party with victory
perched upon her banner. Whereupon
Mrs. Vanllaydeii remarked to Mr.
Shelby that it was easy enough for any
one. to win the game who didn't scruple
to play unfairly. For her part, when
she caught any one cheating, it always
destroyed her interest in the game.
Otlier players took the place of those
who had just vanished and been van
quished, and Mrs. Van llayden and
Mrs. Vanderpool sat down withagroup
of elderly ladies to say cutting things
to each otlier, while the young people
strolled off in all directions. Mrs. Van
derpool saw, with delight, that Mr.
Shelby had transferred his attention to
her daughter, Maria.
Presently a little shower came up,
which drove them into the parlors.
Some one called for singing. Miss Ma
ria considered herself a very superior
singer, and her mother requested her to
sing that beautiful new song she had
been practising. Whereupon she sat
down to the piano and sang an operatic
air, to the great amusement of the Van
llayden girls, who remarked that they
liked that song very much when it
wasn't murdered. They liked to see
people undertake something suited to
their abilities, and Miss .Jennie fol
lowed up this remark by saying that
she had heard Miss Vanderpool sing
some light easy pieces with considera
ble taste, but for opera, really
When Miss Maria had finished her
song, Miss Letty was called for. Miss
Letty did not sing, her mother said:
that is, not much; she was too modest,
but'she played with superb effect. Pro
fessor Tremblewski had said she could
make a sensation in society, if she cared
to. He had never heard anyone play
like her, at which Mi's. Vanderpool
smiled knowingly, and Avhispered to
Mr. Shelby that sheneer had, either,
and did not know that she wanted to.
Miss Letty fumbled over her music
for some minutes before deciding what
to play. She did not practice much.

And their delight knew no bounds
when, a week after that, they heard
that Mr. Shelby was a married man!
That w.ts the missing feather for the
cap of the VanHaj dens. Miss Maria
h.id been caught letting a married man
kiss her: It wasn't the least use for
the Vanderpools to say they didn't know
an thing alout it. Mrs. Vanllaydeii
let no opportunity of remarking about
it pass unused. Such cutting tilings :is
she said can only be imagined. They
felt that they had come off conquerors,
ami to this day they refer to that cro
qnet party of theirs, when Mr. Shelby
was caught kissing Maria Vaudenool,
as one of the most important epochs in
their career in Stephentown society.
An Imitator of Putnam.
The party of Sacramentans who re
cently h-ft for Mendocino county on a
hunting trip, were yesterday heard
from through a brief letter received
here, soon after they arrived the
ranchman intimated to them that he
had discovered that a bear, supposed to
have been the cause of the disappear
ance of sundry young pigs and goats,
had secreted himself in a crevice in a
ledge (d rocks not more than loo yards
from the house, and they could kill him
easily if they "meant hunting." Of
course they declared, with more or less
emphasis, that if there was anything
they wanted it was a chance at a bear.
The ranchman volunteered to show
them P.ru in's headquarters, and, after
thorough preparation, they started out
to do battle. Arrived at the rocks, it
w:is determined after careful survey
that the bear had crawled through a
narrow opening into a cave, which
might be large or small there was no
way of judging, (leorge (J., the quiet
est man of the party, now showed the
most pluck. Evidently he had heard o
Israel Putnam's exploit, for, after a
careful reconnoisance, he announced
that he would crawl in with his gun
after the bear, previously affixing a rope
to his ankles, and when the persons
outside heard him shoot, they were to
pull on the rope and help him crawl
out, as the bear might instigate a vigor
ous pursuit. Once outside the otlier
members of the party could cover his
retreat with their guns. lie carefully
made his way through the hole until he
caught sight of Bruin, and then took
good aim and tired. Meanwhile the re
mainder of the party had been standing
outside, nervously clinging to the rope,
and when the shot was tired, giving a
loud and very peculiar sound, to which
the bear responded with a terrible roar,
which, coming to them through the
narrow opening, seemed to indicate that
the animal was making a terrific charge,
they started on a rush for camp, and
though unconscious of the fact, dropped
their guns and clung to the rope. The
result w;ts that fJeorge found himself
"snaked" out of the hole like lightning,
and bumped along over the ground at a
furious pace. The more he yelled the
faster his friends ran, believing that the
ferocious beast had made short work of
him and soon would operate upon them.
They never stopped until they reached
their wagon, and they found George
badly bruised and with his hands lacer
ated and full of slivers. Afterward the
bear was found dead in the hole. Sac
