But little real satisfaction has been obtained. The issues before us are all summed n aniL embodied in the question. Who will'be' our next Senator. The contest lies between HitcLcock-on the one side and Manderson, Crounse, Saunders, Briggs and the Great Un Ituown on the other. Out represent ation in Congress seem to have no in fluence or conneotian- wkh- national politic but-1&- be a local agency for tho distribution of Nebraska -share- - -j - of the patronage. As the offices and appointments havt been parcelled out amen the .friends of the Senator. lie has beca. attaekedVor. commended. We have not- seen an- attack"-against v"intchcoc1cbasea' on his action on any . of the great national questions which dHue before the Senate. All the charges am thai he has appointed A. Posttnarter at this placa aaaV B; Re- Vcieverat'alandoffice. Whether the Senator has sound views on finance or economy seems not to enter into the questioBcT St appears to be taken for granted that Nebraska's views on those-subjects are not of sufficient im- portaiioa or consequence to be respect- ed. Wbwk'juao will help our panic- '. nlar localUymest iht. regulation of 'the postal service, or the matter of the lend office, or who will make ap- jiit ments for our- frisnds. These are the Hain and leading.- questions asjeeeVie) reference to the seaator-hip, aneUkt w4o!e politics of the state-ap- pear to be emhedied in the senatorial aontrst, .'At tbelast convention the naiotuLL&ue wjt? iUftob: idsnebe fore the hou??e. It enters into the election of our repreenlivc9 and "tutc senator.-, for whom will they vote for senator is asked of our county representative)). If we mistake not the last judicial fight was affected by thi.i iasne. It enters into every little countv precinct election, and bears a prominent though unseen pert there. That we don't approve this is proba bly evident. The land office aw J post al .service are important matters but I the country has more imjortant inter ests than these to ba represented, and we deai and that these interest be considen d in selecting our representa tive. "Any man who would leave the army at this time to dectioneer fir Conurt$t ought to be scalped " This was what General Hayes .aid when pressed to become a candidate for Congress. That waiwbat General Hayes said after three years of hard service, after b arm Had been brokeu after he had been wounded four times. The much greater ;y, aud honor of a Congressman, attended with compar ative ease and. personal safety were offered to him, when his acceptance of them could not be charged to- coward ice, or neglect of duty. He had al ready proved his patriotism, his fidel ity and eourage. His record left no room for the attacks of enemies, and wo the admiration of his friends. He might have retired with honor from the field. He might have rested from the arduous duties of the soldiers. He might have removed himself from the danger of war, and no complaint could have been made. The temptations of a higher office, with greater glory and increased salary were brought to bear on him. But the war was not over. The Union was not yet estab lished. Duty whispered to him that his work as a soldier was not coutple- ' bed. Modesty told him that he could do more as an officer in the field than as a legislator in the halls of Congress, and he listened to duty, and remained at the head of his troops, sharing their hardships and dangers. In modern politics, there is nothing nobler and more patriotic than that reply of Gen. Hayes to his frieuds. "Thranks, I have other business just now. Any man who would leave the army at this time to electioneer for Congress ought to be scalped." So far nothing, has been, heard from the St. Louis Convention.. Til den is supposed to lead b'ya majority. But it requires two-thirds in the con vention to nominate, and it is thought he will be unable to secure them. Judge Davis has declined to be a can didate for tho presidency. Hendricks refuses to be a candidate for the Vice Presidency. The- contest at present aeotnsto- be- between. Tildetr, Hen dricks and Hancock, with occasional references to Bill AlIea-andiThuroiao. At the ratification in Washington, Monday night, the Pennsylvania re publican association boro a banner .with, the device, "Our State, we Hayes-ten-to-Wheal-er. into lino." "Tee." said the political editor, consigning another thousand of Bris tow campaign documents to the waste basket, "of all sad words of tongue or pen, the saddest are these we might have had Ben!" With an Ohio mac iu the White House, an Ohio man as ChieErJastice of the Supreme Court., and another's Associate Justice, with an Ohio man as General of the army, and one Ohio man in the Cabinet, there is a pros pect that the due influence of. the Buckeye State in the .National' coun cils will be maintained. LETTE2 F&0X STILLWATER. Stillwater. Web-ter Co. Neb. June 25th, 187tf. Ed. Ch w.y ; Dear Sir, I thought I would drop you a line to tell you how things are prospering in this vicinity. Crops are beginning to need rain bad. Wc notice Wm. Thompson has a fine piece of corn that will com pare favorably with any we have seen. Tho?e trees Mr. T. has set out on his farm show to a good advantage. A. Wells also has some very firm trees. George Lybarge has been decoratinjr his homestead wih a fine lot of trees. D. M. Francis, our worthy P. M., has a well aml plenty of water, and now says he will neither borrow nor lend G. W. Francis has commenced build ing on his big farm. Mr. John Arm strong, from Cubb Creek, Jefferson county, is here looking around for a situation that suits him for stock rais ing. Mr A. has been engaged' in sheep raising for the last few years. R McBeath has a fine field broke out on his new farm. Renzo Armstrong and Thatls. Arnold- flutter themselves they have the best piece of wheat in tnefefpaTts. We will venture Co say Mrs. Wm. Thompson has the largest flock of young chickens in the county. We wish we belonged to the Clerical Gentry, as they are lare enough to fry. That jolly old Bach., Isaiah Skiles says he is tired of doing his own cooking. James Flett is expectinc his family from Iowa this week. The people of these parts are promi.-ing themselves a good time the 4th of July in Red Cloud. We see every one is anxious to make the celebration a suc cess. Our farmerare talking consid erable about the fair. If they all take what they propose taking, Stillwater will be pretty well represented, and we have no doubt but what there will be some premiums awarded to some of them. Yours, W. A. Bristow has resigned. No more whiskey prosecutions, no more Reform now that the nominations are made. The words of Ingersall are yet fresh in our miuds. The nation demands a man who will be a reformer after as well as before the election. Trcsurer New, and Solicitor Bluford Wilson have also resigned. Hayes and Wheeler have the confi dence of the Liberals who are all com ing back to their support. The im- ipressionis fast gaining ground that the Republicans have now. the strong est ticket they, could put tnto the 'field. Werhould be glad if some demo crat witLin our jurisdiction, or if there be no democrat then somcrepuillican, would make some objection to Hayes and Wheeler, we waut to argue the question.
