Later in the day Blaine telegraphed his congratulations and promised his hearty support. Win. A. Wheeler of New York was nominated for Vice President on the first ballot. There is one solid comfort connect ed with the Convention. Bristow did not get the nomination. Caaq. Franc"i3 Adams, and G. W. Curtis, the white-gloved politicians, and their democratic adherents did not succeed in foisting on the Republican voters a man, whose hobby is reform. If there is any one word that the people are thoroughly sick of, it is the word reform, and if there is any ony ckns of men that the people do not trust it i3 these reformers. It is so easy to write reform on a banner, that it does not require any great integrity or purity to raise that standard. Mm arc pret- ty much the same, as far as fnorals and honesty go. Aud a cheap repu tation as reformers is generally obtain ed simply by denouncing somebody else, seldom by exhibitiag- superior virtue in themselves. To describe a large class of men as corrupt, and wags the war of reform against them, Usu ally demands a degree of egotism more cenfonant with hypocrisy than integ rity. Bristow has shown himself an energetic and faithful officer, and if his friends had advocated him on the pionnd of his character as known, aad hiiiservices already rendered, we could endure his nomination. But they chose rather to- denounce and defame all the other prominent men of the part', and the American people are slow to reward the slanderer and libel ler of his fellows by making him the recipient of public honors. Parkee, Sec'y. ccond Cincinnati district by a Urge majority. In 186. be was re-elected. Hi- course in Congress wa marked by fidelity to the Republican party, by hi ?oucd judgment and consistent action. The campaign of 1 67 in OjWo was one of the mo-it critical in the history of the party in that State. The negro suffrage ijuc-tion and the bond ques tion divided the ranks of the Republi cans and weakened their strength. The Democrats took every advantarc of these differences of the Republicans and put Allan G. Thurmin. their strongest man aud a presidential as pirant in the field for Governor. In this extremity all eyes seemed to turn to Hayes and he was placed in noinin ation as the hopt- of the part. The Democrats elected their IrgMature, but Hayes securer the gorernorship by 3,000 majority. At the i?ext elec tion, Pendleton, another Presidential candidate was pitted aeiinst him, but tono purpose. Hayes had won the confidence of the people and eoald not be beaten. He was succeeded by Gov. Noyes, whom Bill Allen vanquished by his stentorian luncs in 1.373. This victory gave Kisup W. a good lone start in the race for the presidency. But in the next campaign, the cham pion over two presidential aspirants entered the field against the wavering bull of Bashan, led him captive by the fcwns, and the oid Nebuchadnezzar of Ohio ceased to belfcw in the land. Gov. Hayes now about 51 year of age, is a man of purity in private life, aud his public life is without blemish. He combines more than any other man the strength and sagacity of a far seeing stitesrourr, with- the in tegrity, purity and courtesy of a gentleman. Wm. A. Wheeler the nominee for Vice President was born in Franklin County, New York, June 13th 1319. He relieved a collegiate education in his ?outh, after which he devoted to the practice of law. He toon be- oauie known in his section of the state as a man of extraordinary ability, sagacity and integrity. H"v represen ted his county at various times in the legislatuie, aud served as a member of Congress during the first years of the war. He then refused to be a candidate for another term and return ed to private life, from which lie was called to the coustit utional convention of 1S67. He was elected chairman of that body, and gained-great distinc tion from the ability there displayed. In 1S70 he was again, sent to- Con gress and is a member of the ditin guished minority in the House of Representatives at the present date. Mr. Wheeler is not known so much as an orator as a man of integrity, en ergy, good business faculty and thor ough reliability. lie has the fullest confidence of his own state, and will undoubtedly make an excellent aud efheient Vice President. 2d best " " whip.
