Professor Aughey has received no
Sec from the corresponding secretary
uf tho-St. Louis Academy of Science,
tiiat he was elected to the position of
a corresponding member of that insti
tution. 'i5ho $t liouis Academy is the
headquarters of all the scientific miuda
on the Western Continent, and it is
considered a very distinguished honor
to Le permitted to become a member
of the institution. Prof. Aughey re
ceived at the same time, the congrat
ulations of the Academy of Science
upon being the first to- discover of tho
fact that man was the ooteuiKrary of
the elephant on tire Western Conti
nent. Prof. Aughey has also received
letters from some of the most eminent
scientific men of Europe, congratulat
ing him upon his discovery. Prof.
Aughey is the man Nebraska wants
:o fill the important position of her
State geologist."
There is a man out in the west
ern part of the county, that hails from
Missouri. He is so poor and shiftless
that his neighbors catt him-"oldJmis-ery."
Old Misery came here in the early
days and selected the poorest claim
in the county upon which he built
htm a dug.out and pastured one sol
itary hog of the stock. that never fat
ten. The recent developments in the
school districts have been filling him
with consternation. At the time bt.nds
were voted, he worked with all his
e..cry and; employed all the oratory
ti.ut idleness begets n gainst the pro
portion, but to no purpose. During
i-he past few j'ears his taxes ha-ve been
light, very light indeed, but latterly
they have been dividing the districts,
leaving old Misery in the old district.
A homesteader driving by the other
day found him soliloquizing in this
wise : "Thi3 hyar school 'rangement
l mighty onoertaio aud precarious.
Hyar I been and" voted; agains't bonds
and now they have-divided- until they,
have saddled it all onto me. This ed
ucation and common school system-is
jiwioe to be the 'ttructiou of the priv
lcges and liberties oEAuierican citizens.
We didn't have no sicli things in Mis
souri. These hyar taxes will be the
ruination of the country. This is what

And he went out and looked at his
hns and sighed as he contemplated
the" probability of its being fat enough

1. All exhibitors must purchase
membership tickets before making en
tries, a firm being considered as one
person, but only one member of the
firm will be admitted to the grounds
on the ticket that allows the firm to
compete.
2. Articles that are the product of
tire soil must be entered in the uame
of tiie producer, and animals must be
entered by and in the name of the
owner of the same. All articles that
are the re.ult of" mechanical or artistic
skill may be entered in the name
the artist, contriver, or by their agent.

exhibitor designating the number of
the eutry and class, which card must
be attached to the article or animal
and lemain so during the fair. No

4. No entry can be made after 10
o'clock of the second day of the fair,
except in case of unavoidable dotcu
tion.
5. A single animal may be exhibit
ed singly, as one of a herd or pair,
trud in sweepstakes, bat shtiK not be
otherwise entered in more than one
cluss or lot.
G. Entries of Thorough-breds
must be statements aud copies of such
pedigrees as are required by the award
ing committee and must bo delivered
by the secretary to the awarding com
mittee before awards are made
7. Exhibitors are expected at all
times to give their necessary attention
to whatever they may have on exhibi
tion, aud at the close of the Fair, to
take entire charge of the same. Dili
gence will be used by the officers of the
society to prevent injuries, but in no
case will the society be responsible for
any damages or loss that may occur.
8. Persons desiring space for the
exhibition of articles not entered for
competition can have it allotted by ap
plying to the Fecretary, giving name
of article, owner and space required.
9. All articles not enumerated in
the premium list, will be entered in
their appropriate class, and if found
Worthy will be awarded a diploma or
premium.

10. The officers of the Agricultur
al and Mechanical Societies, and mem
bers of the Press arc respectfully invi
ted to attend the Fair without fur the)
nstice.
AWARDING COMMITTEES.
11. Awarding Committees will be
selected from various sections of the
county, and notified of their appoint
ment on or before the first day of the
Fair, at which Jtime they will bo fur
nished with premium-lists by the sec
re taaj.
Members of the awarding commit
tees will report to the superintendent
of classes atone o'clock P M. of the
day for awarding premiums on the
class in which they are elected to judge.
No article or animal that may be
deemed unworthy shall be entitled to
a premium, but in all capes where
there is no competition a second pre
mium shall be awarded to articles
worthy of a premium.
Awarding committees will report to
.the secretary as soon as practicable
after viewing the articles on exhibition
Red ribbons shall designate 1st, and
blue ribbons 2d premiums.
