CALL ?0&A'REPUBL!CA1T STATS CON-V2NTI0IT.
1 ( N.M I NATE r.VNIU IATES FOR STATE
OFFICES.
The Republican-olectnrH ofthe State
of Nebraska arc hereby called to send
!lej:atuH (mm the fevcral conntivs to
meet in State Convention at Lincoln.
-n Tuesday, the 2th day of Scptcrn
I -r, I87fi, for the purpose of placing
vention whatever. Nobody with whom
we had tttiy couvciSii'ioD would o,
nor emild tbiuk. of aay who v.oubl be
willing to incur the necessity c.xpen?e.
The time for the convention was rap
idly neating. The other county papeis
bad published their calls for conveu
tiourf, while the paper of Webster
county .said nothing about the matter.
To make a better showing abroad we
determined to take the responsibility
of calling a critvuntion and signing the
Chairman's, name to the call. We had
no interest iu the affair, would not go
Jo- the convention ourselves, knew of
nobody who would 0, and we called
the convention simply to have the pa
lter indicate that th'-re w.i some in
teiest iu politics in Webster County.
We look the liberty of signing .Mr.
Kellugg's name to the call, thinking
him to be Chairman of the Ceutral
Committee, and holding ourselves re
sponsible to him for u.ing his name.
He knew nothing about the matter.
We have since learned that Mr. Park
cr is the proper man to call the con
vention. We hope this explanation will prove
.satisfactory The latene a of the day
demanded unauthorized action on our
part, and that is our apology.
Missouri delegates are divided, Mor
ton having the preference.
The tccond Alabitua Convention
elected none but Morton delegates.
The re-orgauizat:ou of the Cabiner
is thought by some to be simply au
effort to strengthen the Republican
party by giving all the doubtful state
of the north rcyresentation in the administration.
PttES (rRANT has re organized bis
cabinet. Pierrepont goes to England
in nomination a candidate for member j as foreign minister, Secretary Tail
of congress, and candidates for dov- j ukes pierrepont's place .s Attorney
rrrior, Lieutenant (tovcrnor, secretary
of State, Auditor, Treasurer, Superin
tendent of Public Instruction, ""Attor
ney (leneral, and Land Commissioner,
jmhI to tranact huch other business as
may properly come before it.
The several counties are entitled fo
the same representation as in the
State Convention called this day to
meet at Fremont on the '2'.)d day of
May, 1876. Ji

The friends of II ichcock numbered
within tea as many as the friends oi
a. I other aspirants fir the scnatorship.
The Statu Cou.uiition at Omaha
exhibited extraordinary if not a dis
graceful feature. The object cf t!e
Convention was to select gentlemen
from the Republican party to repie-M-nt
the State at Cincinnati, nothing
more or less. This would seem a sim
ple matter,, requiring only the selection
of men of triad Republican principles,
and adherents- ui' Nebraska's candi
dates Rut the presidential contest,
and the selection of delegates, proved
to be. of but little moment and. occupi
ed but little time.
Previous to the convention Douglas
c.mtity got into a wrangle about its
delegates, and elected two sets of rep
resentatives. One class including
nearly all the prominent men of Oma
ha, Ex. Gov. Saunders, Chief Justice
Lake, Judge Briggs, and Gen. Man
tieison. These men arc all senatorial
upirants, aud unite therefore in op
P mg Hitchcock, and they took the
ume oftheaui Hi chcock de.'egatkn
his uotuiuation. It is very posaib!,
however that this sclume, if" it 'rJe a
scheme, will only create opposition to
t-he Presidential favorite. Never be
fore in political campaigns, have the
people taken so much' interest iu the
Presidential candidates, on expressed
their preferences so generally, and
they will not now brook an interference
of this nature. The candidates are all
well known men. They hare boen
before the people and have established
their characters. Those characters
havo been squarely before the people
for-a long time, and have been ju-Jged
and actad upon, Jorthis once let the
people determine who slmll head the
Republican ticket iu the fall.
