EEPUBLICAN CONVENTION, There will be a Republican County Convention on the Kith day of May at Jed Cloud, for the purpose of electing rvu delegates to the State Convention m be held at Fremont on the 23rd for the purpose ol sending delegates to the National CouTcutiou at Cincinnati. Ed. Kf.lloc.o, Chairman Central Com. We have placed our ticket at the head of the editorial columns tbis issue. Of the large number of MKaes before the public these two are the names who have our unqualified sup port, and these are the men we are satisfied, for whome the Republicans of Webster county would prefer to cast their votes. There are other candidates of ac knowledged ability, of unimpeachable integrity, and formerly, of eminent po litical prominence. But the last Con gress has placed Blaine far in the van as champion and leader of t-e Repub lican party. Steadily and surely, from victory, after victory, he has risen above the host of brilliant and able men, who have hitherto led the party. In the Huuse he has been the standard bearer of the colors about which rallied the Republican minority, and his gen eralship has conducted to victory against the democratic majority Every attack made by the democrats has been successfully repelled. Every rally of the minority has been attend ed with success. It is not too much to say that the Republican party has relied on Blaine in the exciting and unusual session of this last Congress, and the people of the party are not ungrateful to their champion. Huyes, though comparatively a young man, has- nwde for himself u reranl worthy, of the olde5t politician. Iu she doubtful State of Ohio, he has vanquished the two acknowledged leaders of the democratic party, Thur man and-Allen, and has been regarded se t-he tower of strength for the Re pubKvans in that state. His enemies have been unable to- ebarge hiut with the slightest impunity. Scandal has not approached him. We challenge the Democratic party to produce two names so strong and bo untainted. Tnr democrats of the House were severely chastised by the President last week. They bad the effrontery to re Viet the Presidnt to inform themaa to whether he had performed any offi il acis away from Washington, the lawful teat of government, if so, what wrethe acts, and when and where hev were oerfprmed. Grant In reply We don't like to talk as if we were frightened, before there is any cause for alarm. Still it is well to think at the pre6tof i&e prospects of trouble from ou old scourge, the grasshopper. There does not seem just now any great probability of their presence in numbers sufficient to injure the crops. This is about the time however, for the eggs to be batched out, and the young to appear. There were not anv striking indication -i last fail of a scourge this spring, and we do not think there is any strong likdibood of their ap pearance aow. Sut it is well to be prepared for the worst. It is well to watch our fields closely, that they may not come upon us unawaSB. It is desirable that our minds be directed to them, and if they do appear we may not be entirely unprepared. Id the South-eastern part of the State last spring, the people made a vigorous and partially tuocessful fight against the young grasshopper. The leading men of those counties express their conviction. that the pest can be suc cessfully overoome if the people gen erally take the field against them. fThere were two modes used last spring, dftching- aod burning. The voung grasshopper is readfly driven, and driving them into ditches proved very efficacious. If we understand the second mode, it is-to- scatter straw or other' oomhastible matter over the fields, upon whieh the iofant grasshop per gathers in the evening, when the straw is fired. As before stated, we have no reason as yet to feel appre heniv. But it is welt to- have the sabjecfcUo-tuinsb Te ArnMrs Itwthaee met pursu ant to adjournmtat:last Friday after noon. The meetidjwtanoet very well attended by the farmers-cn laeaount of the bad weather and the uustouooable of the time. A considerable degree of interest was manifested by the business men of the town. Chairman of Committee 00 Constitution and By Laws, made his report- which was accepted, when toe Gov. Gaxbir Sas Ta en the Bight Step Let Others Follow in Sis Woke. Gov. Garber has taken the questiou of Nebraska's representation at the Centennial in his own hands, and with out delay has made the preliminary arrangements. We interviewed the Governor yesterday-on tbis important subject and learned some very interest ing facts concerning it. He informed us that Mr- Touzalin, land commiss ioner of the B. & M., had agreed to ship upon request some three or four tons of Nebraska's products not as an advertisement for his road, but to benefit the State, and furthermore, that whatever other assistance could be rendered would be done cheerfully. Mr. Davis, holding the same position on the U. P., has also made similar promises. In addition to these encouraging promi.-e, which will surely be fullfilled, Gov. Garber has secured a luan of $2,000 from the banks of Liucolu, and a like amount from Omaha banking establishments. The Governor will immediately proceed to Philadelphia with a view to obtaining suitable loca tions for a building of some sort io which to exhibit Nebrask's products. It is barely possible that this important matter has been delayed too long, but it is to b? hoped1 teat the necessary grounds can yet be secured. If success crowns the efforts of our wide-awake Governor; he will be prepared to received-Nebraska products by the 10th of rfest month. Since sottfe decisive step has been takea-in this matter, we suggest that the State papers comment upon it, and do what they can towards working up the required enthusiasm. Gov. Garber's untiring energies should be emulated as far possible by public and private citizans, so that we can 6c fully Represented in the Centennial. Perhaps a good showing at Philadel phia this summer will prove to be the best advertisement ever produced for our young State. "Put your shoulder to the wheel," ouehtto be the motto of every man in the State. SCHOOL LAND SALE. Notice is hereby given that on the 1st day of June, A. D. 1876 at the hour of 10 o'clock, A.
