At the last meeting of the village
society a committee was appointed to
co-oierate with the officers of the
Farmers' Institute to make the meet
ing Friday and Saturday of interest,
and also- lo entertain the farmers who
way attend from a distance. W. can
safely assure the farmer? of the county
that they will be cordially welcomed
by the citizens of the village. The
people of the town realize the necessity
of the Institute and are anxious to as
sist them in any way they can.
S. S. Wells, of Harmony, gave us
a pleasant call laat Monday. He re
ports the arrival of several families into
the northern part of the county. Th re
is some prospect of a colony of Freuch
Canadians coming to that part ofth
county, through the labors of Mr. Oli
ver Bouvier.
The newly elected treasurers of
the various school districts veil do well
to remember to keep the various funds
that come into their bauds separate
and distinct. For instance all money.
apportioned by the Superintendent
must be kept apart from the others
and must bo paid only to teaehen.
Treasurers are liable to the teacher.
for the whole amount so rec 'ived from
the Superintendent, and if spcut for
any purpose other than payment of
teachers, the treasurer must refund on
the demand of the teacher. The
moneys collected by taxes should like
wise be divided into the several fund-.
Building, repairing, fuel, contingent
and incidental, and the accuunts should
be kept separate.
There were some extensive fires
in the vicinity of town last Saturday
evening. One which was started by
some men just north of Dr. Tulley's
farm threatened at one time to burn
his stable and house, and was only ex
tinguished by long and arduous .'abor.
Ii seems, at times, a- if our farmers
will be obliged to resort to the law m
order to secure some safety from the
carelessness of their neighbors.
Some of the sisters of the Cong'l
Church met for prayers at the resi
dence of the pa-tor, last Thursday
evening. The special object of the
meeting and the chief burden of their
petitions was the spiritual welfare of
the Chief, and In answer to their sup
plications innumerable offers and leap
year communications were received the
following morning. We have abund
ant evidence that there are hosts ol
ladies yet in the village who are "will
in," "While the lamp holds out to
burn &c." Ther- was the wife of the
patriach Abraham. Her blessing came
late, but it came at last. Let's see,
what was her name ? and Satan was
also in their tuidst.
"Curlev," the coni4rent manip
ulator of the composing-stick has been
on a visit to Riveiton, from which he
returned last Tuesday. As the result
of bis peregrination he informs us
that Riyertou is full of emigrants of
Hibernian origin, who were induced
to emigrate thither Hy the eloquent
solicitations of the ''bard of the Val
ley." The Farmers and Mechanics In
stitute aud the County Agricultural
Society meet Friday and Siturday of
this week. The meeting muy be at au
inconvenient time for the farmers, yet
it is to be hoprid'that these meetings
will be well attended. The Institute
has proved itself to be full of interest
andpr0ujise3"torvj of great benefit to
the' cause of agriculture if it is not al
lowed to die out. There is a little
ground for fearing that the attendance
will be small on account of the lateness
of the season. Farmers generally aie
busy at work ami uuwilling to lose a
moments' timV.' But the value ol
these meetings" is sufficient tojxm
pensate for a little sacrifice at rhis
time. If we allow our interest in the
Institute to 'die away, or if we neglect
the present meeting, it is highly prob
able that no effort will be made to re
vive it, and we sBall be without an in
stitute. The principal subject to come
before the Institute aud the Society i
the coming' fair. Vigorous measure
should bs taken as soon as possible or
Webster county will be, agaio out
stripped By its neighbors.

Mr. L. Raum, (one of the merchants

We feel it a duty that we owe to the

Last attempt to give) a description of
the many new goods he recei.ed. Let
us begin with the Pry (roods depart

that friend Raum has stacks of Call

Lawns, Piques, Cham brays, Grass
cloths for suitings, Cambric-, Creton
nes. Cheviots, Nauketis, Cottonade-,
Pelaines, Woolen Goods of every de

about the Root & Shoe department, is
that it is complete in ail its detail ,
cotisistiiig of boots and shoes of every
description, and every puce, both lor
men and boy-, women, mis.-es, and
children. His Clothing Pepartment
is as complete as his boot and shoe d
parluicnt ; in fact he cm sell you a
fair suit of clothes fir $7 00, and from
that up to $20 00. There still remains
the Hat and Cap, and Grocery' depar -meiits,
to enter into the detail of the
same would consume too much time,
they are lite all the re-t, full and com

it. is worth the while of everybody to
call on Mr. Raum and examine his
stock and prices. We are safe in say
