j W'K paid a viit to th Red Cloud
School lart Friday, and found thrtn
in a flouti-hing condition. There are
ubout sixty .-choljr. attendin;. .'chool
thin term, who are about equally divid
ed between the two school. The
smaller children a.:end school in the
building owned by Mr. Harry and
rented by the District. The building
ia sufficiently roomy, well lighted, but
poorly provided with furniture. The
little ones sit on bench .s ranged along
the side, which must prove tiresome
in the extreme. The District lus not
at present sufficient school accommo
datiou', and it will probably be some
years ere it c n afford to erect a new
school building. As the building cow
occupied by the primary scholars is
amply sufficient to serve their wants
for some time, it might be well to con
sider the proposition of hiring it for a
number of years and furnishing it
properly with desks and other suitable
furniture and apparatus. We were
surprised to find the school without a
bell, which occasions much inconveni
ence aud irregularity.
This school is under the charge ef
Miss Laura Dixon, who has proved
herself during the past y.ar to be
very efficient and fuccessful teacher.
The progress made by tho little on
was surprising. Many who had never
been to school before the last year read
with remarkable ease and fluency in
the Third Reader. Iwall th recita
tions a large degree of interest was
manifested by the pupils, aud the little
lips were buy between recitation?,
conning their lessons over.
The other school is under the charge
of C. VV. Springer, an old and expert
enced teacher. The classes range all the
way from the Fourth Reader to the
High Scaool Class which investigates
the- mysteries of vegetable life and ex
plorcs the unfathouablc depths of the
heavens. Some little trouble is expe
rienced from the undefined boundaries
between the two schools. Some of the
primary scholars seem to have promo
ted themselves into the grammar
school. As it is now tho two schools
are independent of each other. It
occurrs to us that it would be more
satisfactory if the Principal of the
higher school were given thesupervis
ion of both. The primary school would
then work in harmony with the gram
mar school, and souieb dy beside the
pupils would determine whether they
were worthy of promotion.
The building is a very comfortable
and commodious structure and al
though too small to accommodate all
;he children in the district, is sutfici
ently large for the grammar school.
It is well furnished, with desks, scat",
blackboard and other apparatus. At
the last annual meeting a tas was hn
posed to provide books of reference,
and additional apparatus. The win
dow?, however, are without curtains,
which is a seriou-i drawback to the
school. Last' summer, we believe,
siime cheap curtains were procured,
which were hardly thought worth pro
tecting. Some neat and tasty curtains
aie now very much needed. Vw would
call the attention of the District boara
to the Weil, which seems to need in
eftigaupg. The education of the
children which is the essential purpose
of schools seemed to be progressing
satisfactorily. Mr. Springer is an ex
cellent teacher, and bis whole soul is
in the business, and these two causes
being given, results are sure.
It is a noticeable aud encouraging
fact that there are co homestead or
pre eruption slaims-o&ted for tale this !
eas,pn. The price of real etabe is ou
true. Nobody is linxious to tel.
The.homesteaders have, settled dowu
in:oihe coavjeiion thai thtTuv claims
are U be their homes,, aad that their
farms are farms iu jyery cne of the
word, whieh ecu be, purchased only
with money. A. vear ana valuable,
claims were offered for sale at aJmost
nominal prices'. uw we hear of no.
one desirous of selliug. This fuct dem
onstrates that the pcjple here have
abundant faith in the country, and in
dicates a licalihy and vigorous spirit
among the aimers;, very different fiom
that with which they commenced
work last season. We are inclined to
believe that the despondency with
which our farmers Jalotvd ai.d the latk
of Boufidence in th- r . , 'xperienced
to geneially, had much to do with the
condition of ue crops. They were
j-t-idrlast year, but not nearly fo good
would have been the case had there
bw-ii a firm conviction that their labor
would be repaid. Everything betokens
t bat the pr -sent year will be oue of
ttoiursller! priority.

The Valley House, kept by Mr. War
ner, aWo sustains ao excellent reputa
tion. Good hotels are often the best
advertisement a town can have. The
Chief is a fair exponent of the town
and its Republican principles emanate
from the pen of Mr, Mark Warner,
than whom a jolier fellow never chas
ed a buffalo or smoked a pipe of peace
along the murky waters of the raging
Republican. The ''Chief" is prosper
ous though he looks a little lonely
without a squaw iu his wigwam. Red
Cloud is the stamping ground of tiov.
Garber, who by the way was rusticat
ing at his old home. The Gov. has a
host of warm friends in the Valley,
aud they propose to sound his name
for renomination. We can imagine
that this motion will receive the sup
port of a majority of Republicans all
over the State. Mr. Rob' t. .Mitchell
formerly of Crete is nicely located at
this place io tho hardware trade, also
Mr. Fred Rarutb, who has a farm
near town; Mr. Gilham, a follower of
HIackstone, formerly of Crete, is also
a denizen of Red Cloud. JuJge Gas
Im's court was in session and the
Grand Jury was summarily drawn up
in line by Mr. Dilworth and discharg
ed, since there was not a criminal case
on the docket. Taller one for Web
ster Co. Among the lawyers present
we noticed H. S. Kalley, Wileox &
Gilham, L. W. Colby, Jas. Laird, 0.
P. Mason and Mr. Smith of Juniata.
The Judge preserves the best of order,
his decisions are prompt, his work-
quickly and pleasantly performed and
we must say we were favorably im
pressed with the manner in which
Judge Gaslin conducts business.
Neither having court business (nor
political axes to grind, as some wise
acres and heart palpitators have al
ready intimated) we deroted most of
our time to wild ducks and Jack rab
bit.. Mr. Englshardt, Distrit Agent
for the Marsh Harvester, made one of
our hunting party and we are willing
to swear that he actually run down a
full grown Jack rabbit. It is but jus
tice to the Jack however, that he
wis qu'to badly wounded when the
i.Jaisli Harvester man gave chase.
Having exhausted our desir for hunting-,
we bade faewell to the thriving
town of Red- Cloud aud returned' to
Crete.
