WEPNESDAY APRIL 29. 1875 It bow seems to be in order for all the pipers of the state to be express ing their virwup'jn the various ques tion to be acted upon by the coming Constitutional Convention. It is, prob- sbly, through the medium of the press that the members of that body can be the best able to judge of the witdiets and opinions of the people, for the reason that in these days the news papers are t.ate to advocate whatever the popular sentiment demand.. Of course", the great intercuts of Western Nebraska conebts in iucreased representation and more District Courts. These two things havo been a fclauding causa of complaint for yean, and have been thoroughly dis cussed. But there arc some aiattent which may arpear to be rf minor iin portance, and yet have a great bearing upon the general interests of the Slate. The new Constitution ahould pro ride for a sea-ion ,pf . the Legislature bext winter, either by calling the pres ent Legiblature together, or by order ing a new election the coming fall. The last would be preferable for many reasons net necessary to enumerate here. The question of annual or bi ennial j-cssions can best be left to the Legislature, itself. It is -seldom that the attractions of a legislative career are sufficient to protract a aea.OB to au inordinate length. We think it would be the grossest kind of injustice, we might say in gratitude, to oust the present Bute officials after serving one year, when they were elected for two years. They have one and all ben tried and found worthy, and should be allowed to serve out t Ikh full time. The Stato officialii b5ou!d receive a salary adequate to the rnture of their services and the digni of the position they occupy. Surety, the laborer is worthy of his hire The Constitution should provide Mine method by which it can be more easily revised or amended. The dis tincuMiing fault of the present Con stitution is that the slightest change nr amendment requires as much cir cumlocution as the formation of a new Constitution There is a great demand for equal taxation and for the taxation of corporations as well as individual-. These things are imperative; any at tempt to cvado these will be severely rebuked by the people. We have thus hastily mentioned a few of the points of interest to which we call the attention of the western members of the coming convention. A correspondent of the Columbus Journal give his experience in raising timothy grass. He says not a root was killed during the past winter, and that, in his opinion, timothy is the grass for Nebraska. If the raising of the tame grasses in this State cau be made a succcs it will add millions to our general wealth. The emigration to California has, during the present spring, been un usually great. The press of that Bute have found it necessary to put in a protest against people coming there without money or resources, as the supply of unskilled Ubor far ex ceeds the demand. Thousands of un employed men are wandering about the towns and cities barely able to subsist. We have already called the atten tion of our readers to the State Fair, which is to be held at Omaha the coming fall. We know that Webster count; is capable of producing some thing that would do us honor on that occasion. There is no better place iu the State for the growth of grain or vegetables than the Republican Valley. Now we ask that the farmers make an effort to raise something for exhibi tion ou that oceasiou. A little extra pains with something, a few potatoes, imali piece of corn, wheat or other small grain, or garden vegetables, will produce something that will do more to advertise the eouatry than anything else you can do, to say nothing about the increased value of your own pro duets. The State Agricultural Society is under good management, and is di ing a great work for Nebraska. We ptvsume the Secretary, Hon. D. II. Wheeler, of Plattaaoath will famish any desired iufomatie, coaoerniag premiums, &c as be has his heart in the work, ani labors mnccasiagly to nke the State Fair a wieceaa. Tas excitement concerning the re ptttei dweoveriea of gold ia the Black Hills ia ob the increase. Tjic Bee howls fraud, and the Herald claims to have made the lowest bid. In tie meantime the RrpMlain hold the winnwr baBdii.1 and vitforoufy repe.s the, attacks oritiq numerous foe. n-- If the IcsFOBi-taucht by experience are worth heeding it would seem tob duty of our constitution makers to do away with the present system of let ring the Stare printing by., contract It is a source of everlasting discord and litigation, and is anything but economical. The State Printer should be elected by the Legislature and the compensation regulated by law. STATE NEWS. Saunders county has a population of about 10,000, or about double the census of 1870. John Bullard, .near Pawnee City, made a mistake in bis choice of veget ables, and ate wild parsnips when he wanted artichokes. His life was saved. A party en route to the Black Ilife, passing through Northern Nebraska, cleaned out the hen roosts, and took rtik to make camp tires. All this near Kema, Knox county. The Missouri river is higher than at any time during six or seven years. At Omaha the flats are covered with water and many warehouses and other buildings have been flooded. 'I he track of the B. & M. railroad between Bellvuo and Omaha has been under water and passengers are transferred by stage for several miles. The A. & N. railroad has resumed the running of passenger trains be tween Atchison, Kansas, and Lincoln. Grasshoppers are hatching out in Richardson county. No serious dam age is anticipated, as they will proba bly leave as soon as they can travel. Gen. Crook has arrived at Omaha and assumed command of the Depart ment of the Phtte. The Grand Jury of Saunders county has found an indictment for murder agaiusf John F. Camberg for shooting James Thompson, a few months since Piattsmoutb has an Organ Factory in successful operation. This shows enterprise. A young man by the name of Wal worth, living near Nebraska City, pointed a shotgun "in fun' at Jesse McNeal. The coroner's jury said it was an accident, and the Lincoln Jour nal says that a man who will poiut a gun at another, whether in futi or nH ought to be severely punished. This is good doctrino. The citizens of Lincoln got tired of the unsightly conditiou of the Capitol ground:) and took measures to clean out the yard aud plant it to trees on the 30th ult. A good move. Where's Mayor Pearmain ? Hon. Church Howe, whose farm is near Brownville, has seeded 150 acres to small grain and will plant 100 acres of corn. A daughter of T. L. Evans, in ('ass county was burned to death while in a cornfield where her father was burning cornstalks. Her clothing accidentally caught fire, and before she could be relieved, she was fatally burned. She was nine years of age. nastingg is (o have a brewery. Four bridges spanning the Elkhorn at different places have been carried off by high water. So says the Grand Island Times. The two following items are from the Omaha Republican : Charlie Collins and the miners from the Black Hills will arrive here this afternoon from Cheyenne on a special train. Specimens of gold that they brought into Fort Laramie are on ex hibition at G H. & J. S. Collins', for warded fromtbat post to Mr. Gil Col lins by his brother John. Many peo ple called there yesterday to view the same. The first through train on the Union Pacific railroad passed over the break between Lawreace and Green River yesterday afternoon at one o'clock.
