Ed Cihkf: L:;t Saturday eveu ing qui'e a number of the citizens of this and Fnnkiia counties, called on Jim Iloe. who lives nn the plscc of Mr. Geo. Dclong. It is very cvidrnt that the late di-aterous fire, which caused such a great loss uf proper' in this vicinity originated froii him. Thoy went to his bou.e with the de termination that he should leave the country viihin 45 hours or take a dance at the end of a lariat rope. Mr. Olui'tcad heard . f their intentions and called at Hose's tc inform him of the danger ho was in. While he was there about 40 men came to the houc, and a man catne to the door and handed Mr. DcLong a paper, the purport of which was that if he didn't leave the countiy in 48 hours he would dance at the end of a rope, and that theic would be a funeral at short notice. The notice was signed "Chairman of the Protection Society. It was found that Rose left last Thursday, and his whereabouts are not known at present. Considerable disappointment was ex pressed at not findiug him, as a num ber of icvolvcr shots were heard a the men dispersed. CiTiz.-:.v. Clovehton, Webster Co., Neb. Apiil 1st, 1S75. finiToa Chief : Thinking that some items from our part of the coun ty, might not be uniutcrcating to so:i.e of your readers, I hereby send 30U a few of the events of the past week. The storm of the pa3t two daye having passed ever and the weather again be come calm and serene, old sol looking down upon us this morning as peas ant aud smiling as ever. No serious damage d-ne iu this part of the county, but I notice to day quite u number of stray cattle wandering over the praiiic, apparently lost Would that we could say by the fire the same no "crious damage done ; but not s,o, the fire that ptrhupsaomj thoughtless person put out somewhere south of Elm creek aud carried by the wind in a noithcastcrly directiou, crossing Elm crcet, there burning the stable of E. D. Peck, two nice pigs, and a valuable team of horses belonging to Mr. Ful ler, also tho lyjusc of Peter Donally with all their household goods 'clotlf- j -gT jcoi -Advancing north burning four head of cattle uud Injuring sevural others for Mrs. .Morrow. Finally reach ing the stable of 31. Willson, of the Cloverton House, which soon became a blackened mass of ruius, together with fifteen dollars worth of hay. These losses no doubt aro seriously felt by the looser ; yet this is not all, many of our citizens having little or nothing to feed their stock ; but so Ions as the fire did not destroy the old grass, cattle could live well until grass came; but the 2 ro spreading over so large a portion of the county, many will find it very difficult to get their stock through the early spring. When will our people learn wisdom and ccac putting out thoj-e fires. We think that no one can find an excuse for such an act, and wc also think that all good citizens should aid in bringing the law to bear with all its force upon any per son that may wantonly or mischiev iously or even accidentally set these prairies on fire. We are also called upon to record the death of Mr. Robert Marrow, one of the worthy citizens of this part of the county. Mr. Morrow had been east this winter, his family remaining here, ho returned a short time ago to attend to some business, having com pleted his business affairs he went jo Lowell to take the cars for the eastern part of the State, where he expected to take a contract on a railroad. But on reaching Lowell," was taken sick, and after four or five days siekness, died on the 19ih ult. Mr. Morrow was one of our best citizens, aud rc--pccieM by ail who kuew him, as a geutlemon in-tfce true sense of the word. D. F. FS02C ZAH3A3. Elk RiYZR, Montgomery Co. Kn. iMarch 24th, 1875. Ed.
