with Mr. Holmes, of Franklin, and
partner of Geo. Buck, Esq., of same
place. Mr. H. has lately come to the
valley from Lamoile county, Vctmont.

reputation of being one of the best

Yesterday we took a look through

gentlemen are practical workman, and

tin, copper and sheet-iron ware, a
large stock of which is always kept os

country town. We are pleased to
learn that their business is extensive
and on the increase.
It is represented to us that the

the river is being rapidly cut and car
ried off, mostly by the citizens of
Smith and Jewell counties, Kanas.
Thi; timber question is one that affects
every one ia Webter county, and
some method shocld be dcvL-ed to
preserve what there is, or at Ieait, to
-ecure some of the benefits at home.
It has been suzcestcd that there would
be a coo 1 speculation for some one, in
buying up the railroad lands on which
timber ts growing, and divide it into
small tracts, and cell to the settlers.
This would bo a good plan, and if car
ried out would be a general benefit.
As long as our own citizens get the
benefit of the timber lands we have
nothing to say, but do protest against
furnishing Kansas with fusl and build
ing material, free gratis.

This was our rcflectiou as we opened
and took a "squint" at the seventh
poetical contribution that has been re
ceived since the last issue of this
paper, each of which was accompanied
with an urgent request to '"be tare
and publish this week." Inasmuch
as the list wou'd make something over
a column of nonpanel, and we wish to
show no partialitv, we decline the
whole list. A moral reflection or two
may not be out of place here. In oar
short but very illustrioa'C?)- career as
the editor of a county newspaper, we

place, we. may get half a dozen or
more in a single day, and then not see
another for six months. To give one
the p'reccdence in publication, is to
mortally offend all the others, and

called poems sent into the country
office, are gotten up without the least
regard to measure, rhyme, or sene.

ly, very many young persons do not
distinguish between ryhme and true
poetry, thinking that if they can con
struct a "verse" that will "jingle" it
is a proof of genius, that will soon
bring them up to the level with Long
fellow or Tennyson. After giving
this subject due consideration, wc
have deliberately resolved, that if any
one hereafter sees a poem in the
columns of this papr, he may bet his
last nickle that it has been copied
from some other publication. In
other words we decline any and all
original poetry hereafter, without even
taking the trouble to read it.
