T2SHILLS 52ATH OF A lG3C3SA17r.
About four weeks ago our city Mar
shal (early one morning) thought he
heard a strange noise in a store, as he
was passing by. On making an investi
gation he found that the back door of
the store was open ; he took up his
position near that point of egress, in
tending as soon as the invader made
his appearance to shoot him down, as
the best and most easy way to get rid
of s-ch beings. He had not long to
wait, for veiy soon he heard a shuflJing
noise ; and cotkiug his revolver he
stood in readiness juot then a head
protruded from the dcor, when
lu fired at it the shot taking
effect iu the top of his head. The
victim fell, and the officer dragged
him to a ravine a short distance from
the store, and then fired two more
shots into his head. After viewing
his victim for some time he kicked
him with his foot, when Oh horrors !
th. victim in-tead of being dead, as
lie supposed, staggered to his feet
then fell back, but stiil he was not
dead. The officer having no more car
tridges had to go some distance to his
boarding house after more ; on return
ing he fired two more shots and the
poor old dog we called "Jack," was.
dead.
A few appropriate lines to his re
mains :
UM Jack is detanked
IV-ad a. a null,
llchcd Ii h'u b.irkin'
So stilled U hh tail.
How did he die .o very forlorn
Was it from barkin' or Rnawin' a bone.
No t'wa j a shot frota an office' hisa.
And now old Jack lays out in the dry.

The Queen of aix Sewing Ma
chines. In speaking of the merits of
the Wilson Shuttle Sewing Machiue,
it is sufficient for us to say that we
think the invention of this machine
marks one of the most important eras
in the history of this country ; and
when we consider the influence it has
upon the social well-being of the
masses, it is difficult to conceive of au
invention of moreamporunce. It has
a beautiful, noisdesa movement; it
makes the genuine Lock-Stitch"
alike on both sides, and does to per
fection ail kinds of plain and fine
sewing ; it needs bo commendation ;
its rapid sales, the increasing demand,
and the many flattering testimonials
from those who have used it, is su
cient proof: of its merits. The want of
a sewing machine is deeply felt is
every household, and as (he Wilson
